Fanny packs?

I've been thinking about starting to use a fanny pack for carrying some small tools. Is this a MTB fashion faux paux? Or should I get a bag for under my seat? I still have my EMS fanny pack from when I raced enduros.

Stick with the bag under the seat, you won't have to worry about popping a kidney from a loose allen wrench when you go OTB.
I used to carry a bit of stuff, now I'm down to just a tube, bottle of air and a couple of tire levers all in my jersey pockets.

Get a camelback and you can carry water, tools, tubes and lunch too. The MULE is a good one, tons of space, lots of compartments.

The under the saddle bags look like swollen dingleberries IMHO. Fanny pack would be a faux fuck up if you were wearing black socks and sandals on your bike. If your bike is a 29er the sandal/sock/fanny pack thing would be ok.

Best memories..

One of the best memories I have is of my buddy busting his chain on a nite ride going up a grunt hill with a bad shift..... He says "No problem." and takes his fanny pack off, and this thing is stuffed, he whips out his chain tool, not some small light trail tool, he's got the full size Park shop tool in this thing. It has to weight in the pounds... I said "I know what you're getting for Christmas." Yeah, I suppose it all means more if you know Frank and if you were there, either way it is a fond memory for me.

( I guess he wouldn't have broken the chain if he was on a two-nine bike. )

Don't the dudes carry all the tools? Just kidding. 😀

I was actually wondering if you all would tell me what are the items I should be expected to fix when I'm on a group ride...at a minimum. I'm not mechanical at all. I busted a chain on my last ride, didn't have a chain tool and wouldn't know what to do with it if I did.

Nah... most travel light.

I carry a small hand pump, 2 extra tubes, 2 Co2 cartridges, a Park Multi-tool, a small tube patch kit, a quick link and a chain tool. The chain tool and multi-tool I have are still smaller than an all in 1. I throw it in my small Camelback with some treats and I'm self-sufficient.

I do this mainly because aside from 2 water bottle cages, I hate the look of all kinds of stuff hanging off of my pretty bike. It's a pet peeve of mine.

i carry a basic tool set, but since i dont carry waterbottles for water (got the camelback for that 😀) i just put my tools in a waterbottle, and an extra tube in the other one (i have 2 cages so might as well use em), in addition to my pump/CO2 inflater my toolkit consists of one leatherman (overkill i know, but the pliars are great to have), an allen wrench for each different size allen bolt, one flat head and one philips screwdriver (make sure they fit the screws on the bike), the park portable chain tool, tire levers, and an extra tube, so far i have not needed any more than that

Oh, my. I didn't realize you guys brought so much. I am guilty of not bringing this stuff. I am usually sticking to trails I know, I am never that far out, I figured I'd just run my bike back in if anything happened.

But, actually, after coming here and meeting up for the rides, I just realized a few times I've been way out there, it would take forever to run it back and most of the time I don't know the way. That's a wake up call to be more prepared in the future.

I carry a pump, a tube, a speed patch kit, 2 tire levers and a multi-tool. I only know how to change a flat very slowly. I keep it all in the Camelbak.

I like the water bottle idea, but I don't have any cages on my bikes. Don't care for fanny packs nor bike mounted tool carrying cases. Very faux pax.

What else should we know how to fix at a minimum?

leatherman... the pliars are great to have

+1 on the pliers. Sunday, after my third flat I found the end of a staple that we missed twice, sticking through the inside of my tire. Though it probably looked badass when I pulled it out with my teeth, pliers would have been a good thing to have.😀

i also have a spoke wrench in there, it fits 4 sizes of spoke nipples, not that i think i would ever need that on the trail, but if i destroyed a single spoke badly enough i guess i could use it to take the damaged spoke out and still try to ride it out . . .

I started wearing my old leather pack from the late eighties (when it was really cool to wear them) thanks to Matty. carry my camera around for some quick snaps of people n things on the ride. I do, however, have a nice bruise still that says "Cyber Shot" on my gut from the ride at Mahlon when I went OTB.... I'll keep it on the fanny side from now on. 😀

I think a chain tool is a must. Between the derailleur, hanger and chain, there's a lot that can get banged up by the rocks. If you don't ride rocky terrain, then that's a different story. Or if you're a SSer.

A flat tire and your chain would be my vote if you are out on the trail. If you are lucky you are riding with the guys when it happens and one of them will offer to help a damsel in distress 🙂

Those guys are the best!!! 😀
