Where do you see yourself upgrading? As in a stronger motor, better range, lighter weight? In other words, what are you looking for in your next eBike now that you have miles and hours on one?
Great question, I know I want a full power but I'm gonna hang tight until the full power has more available choices in mid weight category. Pretty difficult to have n+1 at these prices haha.

What do you expect the resale value on ebikes to be? With the rapid technological advancements and wear and tear on high-dollar items like batteries and motors as well as traditional components do you think it will be hard to sell an old ebike to get into a new one?

I have often gone the used route on bikes, but think I would be hesitant to do so with an ebike.

Yeah I would be concerned because of warranty on motors especially, maybe that can be transfered. I honestly don't know maybe @jdog or @jimvreeland can answer this better. One thing that doesn't lie is you will know exactly how many miles the motor has.
I never considered a used ebike so really can't say.

The resale value would be the same as an electronic device like an Apple watch, just IMO. Which goes without saying, it would drop like a rock after a new version is released. What makes it even worse is that there is no standardization with ebikes. Different battery plugs, door covers, cables, etc.. which makes it obsolete even faster.

I would generally say there's no re-sale value at all. You can't even work on the First Gen Specialized Bikes anymore...

One thing people are often forgetting about e-bikes and everything battery powered anyway is how they create the opportunity for little kids in third world countries to keep splashing in the mud instead of doing ungodly things like going to school…

Obviously that is also true for the battery on the phone I am using to post this.

I uploaded an ebike ride to strava and it triggered all sorts of koms. Everyone probably left work early to defend them before I fixed it.
If you have a garmin bike computer they have ebike activity profiles now so your rides will automatically be categorized as an ebike ride.

Dead batteries can be replaced with new cells. The motor controller can be bypassed with an aftermarket one.

There is value in a frame with a built in battery and motor.

Interesting. I wonder how long it will take for the aftermarket to fill that void. If not for some of the earlier, lower production models, but perhaps for some of the models selling in decent quantities today.

There are already companies out there that will repair the motors and batteries that are out of warranty.

Maybe the ebike whiners should also give up there e powered appliances. Maybe go back to the rivers to wash your clothes. Give up your dishwasher and microwaves. Throw away your air conditioning because your not living the hardest life you should 🤣.

I went through the first couple pages of this thread, it was a good read. Poll still shows almost 50% of the crowd still haven't even ridden an ebike, I suspect that's changed. I was one in the very beginning that was semi anti, but the more info I read that sentiment changed. Then I decided to make the leap and never will look back. Honestly I dread the day I have to jump back on the Amish because of a mechanical. I'm one of the few who doesnt switch back and forth because I am having way to much fun on pedal assist. This bike has added more challenge terrain that my pedal bike could never take me.
Much love to all Amish or E assist because we all have the same goal!
Comparing an ebike to powered appliances isn’t really an accurate comparison. Bikes are primarily used for transportation exercise, it still puzzles me as to why one would like to make exercise easier, isn’t it supposed to be hard?

I don’t hate ebikes per se, I don’t think they really hurt the trails either. I do get a kick out of all the rationalizing that’s done to justify having an easy pedal up the hill because you like going downhill more than up though, people do get creative. Ebikes are not for me, I didn’t get into this sport because it was easy. I personally believe it should be hard. I also believe not everything in the world should be made easy and accessible to everyone. Some things should remain hard with a price of entry that should be paid in determination, blood, and sweat. Can’t make it up that hill? Do it till you’re in shape. Can’t clean that tech section? Same. I don’t see surfing, rock climbing, white water kayaking, etc. being made easy. Mountain biking used to in the same category as those sports.

Just thinking, are e-kayaks next? Need to get in on the ground floor. 😁

Sure, if you're a handy consumer. No shop will touch it. Last thing I want is my shop to burn down because some schmuck bought a soldering iron and battery pack off Amazon...
Well.. chances are if said consumer is handy enough to replace batteries and build their own motor controller, then they probably aren't taking their bike to a shop for repairs.
