Cougars spotted

I believe it's the answer to over populating deer which have no predators except cars...

If another one of these big brown rats jumps out into the road as I'm going downhill at 35+ mph, I'm going to start bringing hand grenades to start alleviating the problem in my neighborhood.

Just for this reason is why NJF&W will not let public know. People will want the execution of these animals because of the few cases of attacks out west. In those cases these animals were at the brink of starvation. That is not going to happen here there is just too much food supply available. There are so many factors that the chances of ever seeing are next to nill. Fact is NJF&W are actually keeping tract of mating pairs and young. I believe it's the answer to over populating deer which have no predators except cars...

To say they know about mountain lions in NJ but are keeping it a secret to the public would also be wrong.I hope the reasons you mentioned are not their reasons. That would open up a whole other can of worms if you know what I'm saying. Still waiting to see this wildlife cam.

Would you pleaz come to my yard when you are done ? 😡

I've also asked NJ and the response was "no, there are none that are FROM the wild". There was a sighting in Northern NJ in Mahwah at the FedEx building. I spoke with one gal who said NFW was it a bobcat or anything else, it was a mtn lion. The unofficial state stance was that it MAY have been a private owned exotic that was too large to contain and then released into the area. I find that the most likely explanation.

That's certainly a possibility. But another possibility is that they've slipped back into this area slowly and unnoticed. As mattyb touched on, they have more than enough food supply in this area so one could ague that they have next to no reason for making frequent human contact. Instead they are acting as they naturally would....barely visible except for a few odd sightings here and there.

Your story actually brings another possibility to mind. Suppose NJDEP decided to start a pilot program where they introduce one or two cats to an area and closely monitor them by GPS to see what they might do for deer control. Suppose one or all of these cats slips off the radar somehow? Now that is pure speculation but its also not outside the realm of posssibility.

Back in 2004 or 2005 I saw a mountain lion run across the road and vanish on rt 206 in Lawrenceville/Princeton NJ. Granted it was 1:00 AM, I know what I saw. A huge cat with a LONG tail. No one can convince me otherwise.

These pictures were sent to me. They are apparently from a motion-trigered trail camera in Stillwater or Fredon, NJ. They were reportedly taken at the beginning of the month.

I don't claim anything. Just passing along what was sent to me. Presumably all 4 were included to show more context of the animals that are out there. The bottom one is the money shot.

I don't think the DEP would try this, there is too much liability on their part. Also, there is a lot of evidence that predator introduction always goes real bad See: Toads in Australia

I mean, if it was to get out and eat someone's baby and they took it down and found like...a property of the State of NJ tag or something on it, everyone would probably end up in jail.

Well whomever said "beginning of the month" didn't read the date stamps. And either the temp sensor is way out of whack or these are totally bogus. I was thinking maybe it was over-heated by sun exposure, but black bear image says 68 degrees at 5:40 AM on 8/29. According to this the temperatures don't suggest it would have been 68 degrees at 5:40 AM.

Of course this means nothing because the temp sensor could be out of whack. Or it's real. Or it means someone photoshopped a bunch of pictures. Who knows.

Interesting.

I suppose someone familiar with the area could probably find, or not find, exactly where the camera is.

Part of me finds it hard to believe the state would introduce them for the reasons given above. I also would have found it hard to believe the CIA was performing ESP experiments as well as mind-control experiments with LSD 40 years ago. So you really never know what crazy crap the Gov is doing.

Yeah, my scheme there was strictly a conspiracy theory option for what could have happened. But my response was pretty much going to be on par with yours. Take a look around....We don't exactly have the brightest people making decisions on our behalf.

I've met several NJ F&W staff. They're good people that love their job and are very good at finding evidence to support unusual wildlife sightings. Even though they know their crap (and paw impressions), I doubt that they are capable of an elaborate CIA style cover-up. 😀

After all these postings with sighting locations, I'm guessing that if the cougars are out there, they won't be there too much longer.

Well, guess what? I just saw a mountain lion 20 minutes ago. It ran in front of my car about 2 miles south of Lambertville on River road. I slowed down and it stood there staring at me from the grass. I'm sorry but I didn't even think to take a picture.

BIG cat, like Whoa! you don't see that every day. Now I'm a bit freaked out. I have been riding the canal path at night almost every day. This is going to haunt my brain for a while. Not sure if I can bring my self to do these solo night rides for a while...

Bah! DO it now, You'll increase your average speed. 😀
Seriously, there's easier prey than you on a bike. And think of it this way, he was there all along, you just lucked into seeing him this time, you'll probably never see him on the trails. But that's easy for me to say... I don't ride solo in the dark.

Haha yeah, I know. It's just the thought of knowing whats there that you can't see. Same thing when I'm sea kayaking where there is sharks. I always get a little spooked.

I must be lucky. This is the second time I have seen one in New Jersey. Plus I also crossed paths with one while biking in Maine.

I was cruising around my neighborhood in ultra-suburbia yesterday and saw two bucks in a place that blew my mind. That cougar has plenty of food, don't worry!
