Classic & Vintage thread...

Not the most vintage thing out there but I still love it. My 1997 Dakar team.

Super light easton elite tubing and plenty of upgrades since I bought it in 97. It still gets a routine thrashing at Sourlands and it's always available for friends that want to give mountain biking a try.

Still wearing the street rubber from my new years eve ride in NYC.

i'm restoring a vintage schwinn paramount now. the thing is MINT. just had the wheels rebuild using the OE campy hubs. i think it is a '61 based on the SN. i'm SO bummed i have to give this bike up when i'm done b/c it's gonna be beautiful. i'll post a few pics in here later, but here is the classic "disney" style decals. this one also has hand painted pin stripes and nervex lugs.

i'll also dig up some pics of the Raleigh i re-did a couple years ago.

I just wiped the dust off it 🙂 Got it back in (probably) '95. I had their mothership for a season as well, but that was more of a loaner that I returned to them after the season. Should've just kept that one too 🙁
Some minor cracks in the headtube, but I can't get rid of it. One of the best bikes I ever rode. The geometry was/is awesome

Man, I wanted one of those so bad when they came out. Don't get rid of that frame. In fact you could probably have FTW fix it for you if you ever desired.

My Rhygin taken a few years ago. I got this when I got married back in '97. It took a while for it to get built. Met Christian at Rhygin at one of the Mt. Snow nationals in '95 and '96. I think Rhygin went belly up not long after that. Great frame and can still handle singletrack but I keep it on hung up. Might make it into a townie/fixed/cruiser bike for trips to the beach and around town.

Puchased new from the Montrclair bikery 1991,1993

1991 Trek 7000 that was my very first bike and the bike I revived and rode in 2010 when getting started all over again.

IMG_1512.jpg

1993 Trek 9000 that was my second bike. Never really liked it even back in the day but rode it in 2010 when the 7000 was frequently busted/non-functioning.

Once I got settled unto my 2010 Trek Fuel, the vintage MTB geometry feels crazy ( too small, too twitchy, stem is too long and too low etc etc )

The 9000 will be kept around as an artifact not fun to ride. JimV retooled in the 7000 ( XTR V-brakes rather than canti's, XTR shifters and platform pedals ) and I'll swap the tires at some point to make it an official townie but perhaps a final couple runs at CR prior to doing so...

marley - i had that same GF hookoo you have posted on page 1 back in the day as my first mountain bike. when i took it to college i was an ass and left it out overnight locked up. when i came out the next day all that was left was the frame and the front wheel, the whole bike was stripped - every component was stolen. i was totally bummed. i ended up trading the frame for a rigid mongoose alta.

My '90 Merlin. This was my second mountain bike, after my Cannondale M500.
It was my only mountain bike for 10 years, ridden often, raced and rebuilt about 3 times, not counting the conversion to single speed a few years ago. I put the original pristine Ritchey Logic fork back on it.

I'd never get rid of this frame since it has some sentimental value to it. I actually spoke to him about a year and a half ago about building me another one though. He suggested a different alloy and ditching the canti mounts, but otherwise said he'd be happy to replicate it for me....and for (what I thought) was a reasonable price. And now that he's only a few hours up the road, it makes it even more appealing to get done 😎

Awesome. Would give a lot to find a Pit Boss up on Ebay. Dare to dream. Great frame!

Classic & Vintage

Frame definitely counts as CV (M700 from somewhere between '91 and '93), but rest of it has been updated w/parts I had around to make it SS (doesn't really come through in pic, but paint fades subtly from black to dark green from front to back). Also have a mid-'80s (I think) Univega SupraSport that I found in the trash five years back or so and converted to a fixie (will need to track down a pic of that). Great thread!

what's the headangle on that thing? it looks pretty slack

Yeah, it's definitely slack - think around 66 in that position ... But, that's cranked all the way out to 130, and it's U-turn down to 90. I'm a fan of slacker head angles, though.

that is a bummer - i am loving the fisher right now - has a unique type of BB that was interesting to overhaul - took some asking around online to get the hang of what of needed to do but it overhauled pretty well

From about 1995.
Love this thing!
I've beat it quite a bit.
After a new chainstay and powder coat, it looks awesome.
Great as a SS too.

Current vintages

Those Bonty's are sweet. ecsnsmb- you did a nice job with that. Thanks for the re-post.

Currently this is what I have that classifies as vintage.

The War Wagon: Cannondale Mountain 1000- my best guess is maybe it's a '96 model.
CannondaleM1000.jpg

I bought this a while back from a neighbor, kind of as an afterthought, thinking maybe I'll ride it once in a while.
You know the story- it has seen a ton of miles since then.
Great all-around explorer, and is my commuter ride.
Mostly stock, but a major upgrade was the stem adapter which lets me run a threadless stem. Getting the bike to fit me wasn't easy.

And it has antlers!
(The bar ends were on it when I got it, and I figure I'd leave 'em. Flame on).

And if we're doing vintage road rides, here's one a friend gave me recently.
Miyata 1000 (1983?)
Miyata1000.jpg

This is going to be a fun winter project- let's call this the "Before" pic.
Frame is nice and clean, I won't do much, but clean up the cockpit a bit, I don't know, maybe go with brifters.
If anyone wants to chime in as to what they've done with an old road bike with downtube shifters, I'm all ears.

My first MTB

'90 Giant Boulder with full LX kit. This thing went all over the Northeast and Canada back in the day. Gotta love the reverse sloping top tube! 😀 (on a 21" bike 😕) and the white "pulley stem" (a la Salsa). Other notables: Onza bar-ends and Odyssey purple anodized brake booster.

The only things I have left are the derailleurs, crank, and one of the cages (all serving time on a different bike). I donated the frame to a friend who uses it now as his Christmas bike (lights and all)
