Chimney Rock Conditions

great dirt today, some soft & wet spots on white and upper black, otherwise ideal
forgot to mention, smallish (6”?) tree down across trail here

It was Nnice and crunchy out there this morning at these temps. The ball field reroute rips going down, what a fun way to end my ride.
Has the shed trail seen any puddles forming or freeze thaw??

No puddles, it drained well after rains.
Freeze thaw is definitely in effect. I rode at 12pm today and it was starting to get greasy. Upper shed, which gets more sun and upper Stop Sign as well as any new construction with sun exposure. The new reroute on ball field and even small reroute at start of ball field which was done in July were soft.
The usualy wet spots on red and blue are still dry due to low water table from drought.

The new re-reroute behind the ballfield was the only really wet section in the park by 1PM. That 100 yards totally covered the downtube with muck. If it weren't for that, the bike would be clean after the ride. Stop sign should probably be avoided to after the sun hits it.

Chimney Rock Park homicide arrest made (1997).

Kirt sent this to me a few days ago, and we're trying to figure out where that was. Right off the Gllbride lot seems most likely but who knows how many dirt roads the world had back in 1997.

Those Canadians...

He lived in the area and fled to Canada three years after her murder. Theres still several cold case files from back then. Wonder if he stuck around and got a few more under his belt before he left to Canada. 🤔

In any event, glad they caught that piece of 💩

Looks like the bridge on Gilbride next to the lot in that aerial photo if you zoom in.

Glad they were able to solve the case!

Edit: there used to be a dirt road off Van Nest in 1995 leading right to that spot, so that’s probably it. That’s now the trail off of the foot bridge behind the frolf course.

I'm being told there is one other case with a very similar MO that is still being actively investigated and may be tied to this dude.

Looks like the trail to the left coming in from the Gilbride lot and parallel to the stream. It widens up before breaking off as a single track. Glad science was able to bring her murder to justice.

going out in a few, will report back
If you go early enough it's great! I intended to get out at 10 am, didn't head out until noon...rode most of the park, places I'd avoid if you don't get out early are:
  • All of white, sooo many spots were crispy but soft, getting ready to turn to grease, if I got there 30 mins later it woulda been awful
  • Ballfield Loop, that new section riverside was AWFUL * 10 when I got there
  • Cromwell shed and stop (the outer loop was fine)...shed entry looked good so I had speed into the tabletop and the soft mud brought me almost to a complete stop...I then took the connector to stop and while it was better, it's worth avoiding
Rest of the park was primo.
