BIYF Winter 2015 Smack Down

Today was just another errand-running day for me, trying to get things done before the snow arrives. In the morning, I started out on the Henry Hudson Trail since that's the easiest way to get to my first destination. After about 100 feet, I said "this isn't going to happen" and turned around. The rutted slush from yesterday was now rutted ice, and I was sliding all over the place. As an alternate route, I stuck to roads for the rest of the loop. As it turns out, this really isn't worth anything anyway, due to the ride later in the day.

After taking care of a few things at home, I still had some time left in the afternoon, so I headed out yet again to a few stores. I remembered that there was a small park near one of my planned stops, that I've been to only once before. The trail there is paved, and by the afternoon, most of the snow/ice on paved surfaces had melted. So, I headed over there and did a few laps during my journey.

If not for the snow yesterday, I may have ridden the mtb again today but I didnt want to risk a shitty ride with the warm temps so ride the road for some Headwinds and Soft Dirt. Wind was relentless and I had originally planned to ride the Pleasant Valley dirt sections in each direction, as well as Lakeview and it would have probably been close to 45 min of dirt roads. After the first one, I changed my mind, soft dirt and slow going so i would have run out of time. Wilson and Barry were in ok condition as they are in fields and face south. Hunter road, while facing south is hidden from the sun in spots and the area in the woods was like a river and then the less traveled part still had and inch or two of snow but going back the other way was in such bad condition, I just rode it. After the bridge the snow was gone but it was super muddy. I decided to loop around on NJ 29 so I would have wind to my back the whole way home.

Hunter Road, Middle Section

Bike deserved a spray down after this mud fest.

1 point and the first time I rode all 7 days in this contest.

Thought I was going to get baby blocked but had just enough time to get to the LHT for some O&B sick MUT slaying.

Dusting of snow this morning and limited salting made for excellent going to get to the JTL connector. The 4" of snow from saturday condensed into an inch or two of power sucking riding surface. Sometimes the path was clear with just the dusting and sometimes the people a foot got there act together and all walked in the same 2' sections, making a decent riding path.

After backtracking the section over to Princeton Pike, I was in the park in lawrenville proper, which they apparently plowed on Saturday, so that made for some faster speeds and easy going. Road the first section into Mercer Meadow where the people a foot didnt have their act together and and it was a icy foot path disaster with that constant slip, catch, slip, catch or riding like a 1" icy rock garden. Cruised back through the plowed park and hit the road on the way home, where i saw the lady i often see in the mornings that run like Shrek and every sounds like him when I say good morning and she just grunts. On the way home enjoyed some tailwind goodness.

That Lady That Runs Like Shrek Isn't Afraid of Alittle Snow

1 ride
1 dark
1 LHT

Just to confirm, it was lightly snowing the entire time. I can't claim precip point here, correct? Because if so, I will claim that instead of the dark point,

no precip point for snow -

Great job getting out there this AM....

Made the wrong assumption that there is only one park in-town, and we have a parks department, and they have a paved loop path, with xc flat area beside it. so it should be plowed...WRONG.

every pedal stroke was breaking through blown snow, with a crust, and frozen foot prints, dog prints, deer track, and anything else that the town has ignored...

it was a workout, which is the point. Wish i had the hr monitor on......

Kicking off the week with possibly the best ride ever:
https://www.strava.com/activities/246498041

2 points: ride + park

The ride title says it all. But if you are too lazy to click it, let me summarize it with 2 words: The suck.

Somehow last week I strained one of my right ab muscles. Probably this happened when reaching into the freezer to see if there was any hidden ice cream, or something like that. This ride tweaked the shit out of it. Riding this park full of frozen boot and 4x4 tracks just kicked me all over the place. I was close to throwing my bike at one point.

Not the high point of my cycling year. My right nut hurts a little bit now. I should get a bonus point for that. And for riding in the snow. And for not kicking any kittens on the way home. And a dark point because I closed my eyes the whole time. 6 mf'ing points for this ride. Score it Donny.

Operative word today seems to be suck. Got out of work early due to snowmagedon so figured would hit the towpath before it got too deep. Hardly any hikers - pretty much like riding thru setting concrete as my blistering 5mph pace indicates. A little easier on the way back as I tried to ride in the winding drunken sailor path I cut on the way down. Was glad to see over 45 min on the garmin, that was more than enough.

Had to search all the utility rooms to find a bike that wasn't dry rotted. Found a new Huffy style clunker that worked. Strong winds today so it was kinda slow.

-1 pt for posting a ride from florida during a NE blizzard

variable snow conditions made the ride a bit of a challenge.

Where the conditions were 1/2" powder over frozen ground the riding was relatively fast (like riding on a cloud). Other places were very icy (particularly areas that had lots of foot traffic over the weekend). Others places, the snow had the consistency of wet concrete which made the riding quite hard.

1hour, 8 miles riding at Thompson park (lincroft)

2 pts (ride plus park)

Worked in Cape May this morning so I hit some of Belleplain State Forest's fire roads/jeep trails/boardwalk trails on the way home. It was 40 degrees and pouring when I got there, steady rain and temp down to 34 when I left. It was a pretty enjoyable ride besides my still-wrong-geared-for-SJ-SS. I was stoked that my 5 or so yr old lake's stayed dry.

Just got back from xc skiing in a blizzard. I was reluctant to go out but the golf course is 3 miles from my house. Took care of binding issues I had the day before and had no equipment issues today. Despite the fact that it snowed most of the day there was only about 2" of fresh on top of some compacted crust. This set up for perfect conditions for classic xc skiing. I call it hero snow, easy to control skis and don't have to work to hard to glide.
Could have done another hour but have to conserve energy to dig out tomorrow.

Thought about going out in the afternoon for a ride, but saw that blizzard conditions don't start until late night, so opted to wait around because maximize points. Txt'ed Jmanic to ride at Demerest, but the driving conditions were turning sh*tty so opted to stay extremely local. The trailhead is 2 blocks away, but I don't like to ride there for various reasons.
