I could use some input on what to do for my lower back. It's been at least 2 wks. and I'm not getting relief. I'm seeing a chiropractor 3x wk., but I'm worn out w the pain and headaches. I'm thinking of massage, muscle relaxers.... I'm afraid to get out on the mt. bike. No jogging. The only thing I can do is road bike. It was such an uneventful injury, too. I was on my Mt. bike, but don't even know what happened. I just felt a pull and couldn't move after that...I'm soooo bummed.

I've been fighting back pain for about 10 years now. Really bad, like hospital bad.
The key is to keep you back well lubed, lol. Seriosly keep hydrated and you have to work fluids around in your spine. The best way I have found is my bike. The constant movement of my hips and spine really help. I am just getting over a 2 week fight wih my back, because the weather is bad I can't bike and it just gets worse and worse.
Ride, but take it easy. Put hours in but don't strain yourself. Get on something with gears so you aren't pulling up on the bars so hard. Booooooo I know 😉
at night I do heating pad. 15 min on, 15 off and the stretch. Repeat as long as you have time.
The other night I fell asleep on my heating pad on high for 2 hours and it seemed to really really help, but I'm nervous about that.
Don't tough it out, take a muscle relaxer, it helps your back get back into alignment.
Motrin works better for me, I have to take 6 to 8 advil for any response.
I hAve also found that rubbing my back between my love handles and spine, where the muscles are all screwy actually makes it worse, much worse.
Now I know to throw my leg over in bed and stretch till my back pops, after I can gain the flexibility back to make it pop i know I'm on the way to recovery. The heating pad helps with that.

Patty,
Can you be more specific? Where is the pain located? Is this a new situation?

Hey Ruth-- Yes this is new. It's my lower back. Luke seems to hit the nail right on the head... my heating pad is my new best friend.I've been afraid to ride, but maybe I'll take his advice. Thanks guys..

After having been in a major car accident years ago, I know all about back pain. The first thing I would recommend is that you go get checked out (by a doctor, MRI, etc.) to make sure nothing serious happened, like a herniated disk. Alot of disk herniations happen and people don't even feel it. Then it may be years later when you have major crippling pain from it. Best to correct it when it first happens.

I would also suggest reading John Sarno's book, "Healing Back Pain".

Your next step would be to find a physical therapist. A good one will be your back's best friend! In my experience, they are more knowledgeable than doctors and what they do can really make a huge difference.

Heat is good too.

I would not recommend taking any NSAIDs (Motrin, Advil, etc.). They all significantly deplete glutathione, which is an antioxidant that your body does not manufacture, and is necessary for energy, for cell regeneration, and also for the immune system to work well.

There are plenty of natural muscle relaxers/pain relievers that I would suggest. For pain, Valerian Root. For muscle relaxer, mullein root. They come in tinctures that you should be able to get at any health food store. For pain, you can also try homeopathic Arnica Montana (great for muscle soreness too). As FYI, you can also use it to prevent muscle soreness. For muscle soreness, dosage of 30c is good. For an acute pain like you have, I would use the highest dosage, which is 200c. You should also be able to get these at the health food store. One company is Boiron, whose 30c comes in a small blue cylindrical container and 200c comes in a lavender container. Another one I used that was a big help for me after my car accident was Formula 303, which I got from my chiropractor. I think you can also buy it online. It is a natural muscle relaxer and worked much better for me personally than any of the prescription muscle relaxers or heavy duty pain medications my doctor prescribed (and with no side effects).

Movement that does not aggravate is also good. Listen to your body. If you go easy and bike and you feel like it is not aggravating, go for it. Also I would suggest looking into Yamuna body rolling (www.yamunabodyrolling). Get a yellow ball and her book and do the back exercises. This also made a huge difference for me. The ball is also great for anyone who exercises. You are unwinding and realigning the muscles correctly when you work with the ball and do the exercises. It is great for anyone who exercises, as exercise will start to bunch muscles up and they won't work as efficiently. She explains all of this much better than I'm doing in her book. You can get her book at Barnes & Noble or on her website.

Hope this helps. Feel better!

I knew I could depend on my old college roomie to explain things in MAJOR detail...AWESOME!!!

Patty, if you need any more info, PM me!

chiropractic neurologist

I also forgot to mention that if you are still having headaches after seeing a physical therapist you may want to go see a chiropractic neurologist. Here's a list of them in NJ (not many in NJ as their boards are extremely rigorous) - http://dcneuro.info/wordpress/njccn-directory
Again, in my personal experience, more knowledgeable and competant than any medical doctor (orthopedic, neurologist) I have seen. The one I see is Dr. Kevin Parks in Wall, NJ.

Wow-- thanks so much for all that info. I'm going to try the natural muscle relaxers, and I work tomorrow (hospital) and will talk to some P.T.s there. You are right about listening to ur body too. I did some jogging on the treadmill and felt fine. I know how NOT to move,so I can avoid that. I just want it better asap. I am going to attempt Mt.biking next week, and I'm afraid I'll make it worse, but I'll be careful and try to take it easy. No SSing yet. Thanks again---P.Pedals

Most back problems can split into 2 types: muscle/nerve or structure.
Structure is mostly surgical w/ recovry w/ a pt.

Nerve/muscle problems are best treated using several methods. A good pt and/or massage therapist are worth it. Fyi, wait 72hr after the tweak/pain for the muscle/nerve to stop twitching.

Short term an nsaid is ok. Long term it doesn't help.
Capsicum &/or a heating are better long term. Careful as capsicum effect is delayed & can get rl hot.

Glucosamine/Chondroitin is a good fluid to help lubricate. The best lubricants are found @local vet/horse dr. There are many better & stronger applications.

Long term solution involves increasing flexibility, adding/balancing muscle btwn stomach/back and removing trigger pts via pt/massage therapist.

As we get older, we get stiffer & tighter. Office work and long hours in car doesn't help. Back, hamstring and stomach stretches will help prevent tweaks. Don't bounce and go slow. Your pt will do many of these stretches.

If you feel ANY lumps in your back go to a massage therapist. Although some can be a skin/fat nodule, most are trigger pts. This is a previous injury site that is a trigger pt for muscle/nerve pain. Once an injury happens it becomes much easier to reoccur.
The pt will massage out the lump and remove the trigger. Most pts need 20-60min to completely remove the lump. However the smaller it is the less likely it will reoccur.

Good luck dealing w/ what is a very common injury but usually not handled correctly.

WOW, such a plethora of good information on this forum!

Pedals, the DIAGNOSIS is of paramount importance, then you can go about seeking out the appropriate treament.

Hopefully your D.C. has provided this information.

Please be careful about falling asleep on your heating pad. That is generally NOT a good thing. I wish I had a dollar for every patient who presented to my office saying, "....and then I slept all night on the heating pad and couldn't get out of bed this morning..."

Great for business....lol

Feel free to send me a private note as well if there is anything I can do to help.

I used to go to my chiro 3x's a week. Not anymore. he/she is probably forcing your skeletal issues into place and then tight muscles work the adjustment out of place. Have you tried yoga? I found yoga and periodic chiro adjustments did the trick. Yoga will accomplish the same thing as muscle relaxers but it won't fade after 6-8 hours and it won't leave you feeling drowsy. Pay close attention to the source of the pain, someone else said it...skeletal or muscular. My tight muscles led to skeletal issues. Hence, yoga a few times a week and a good chiro adjustment once every few weeks. You should be good to go! Good luck and as others have said, listen to your body.

Definitely agree w/ yoga. Most consider it a spiritual & relaxing but its a great stretching program. Each yoga form has different + & -. All will help your body self awareness, which is great for balance, position and traction on the bike.
Chiro is best for misalignments & bad muscle balance. It won't cure skeletal issues but can minimize some of the effects. For some its all one will need if you never get injured.
Massage Therapy is a must as its the only therapy that will remove/reduce trigger points from past injuries. While MT won't fix muscle balance it will find & identify where it exists. It won't fix skeletal issues but help minimize the effects. It can't fix misalignments but will help minimize the effects of.
Good luck finding the treatment that fits your situation.

Great info

This was a great thread,..lots of really good advice. I use a lot of suggestions mentioned and it really does help.

My back is slowly feeling better. Been gently exersizing and stretching, along w chiropractor and heating pad at night. I rode the trails the past 2 days-took it extra slow and careful w no issues. Although it's still tight and sore at the end of the day, I think it'll be ok. 😱

NICE!!!! Happy to hear and see you're getting better. Now we need to start preparing for April 25th. It'll be here before we know it.

Try getting a massage, as recommended earlier. Then immediately afterwards go see the chiropractor.

Why would you need to see a chiro after a massage??
I've never needed anything after a massage. None of the pros on tour ever do. Its usually time to sleep after a massage.
