6 Mile Run Conditions

rode yesterday late pm as well - trails couldnt havent been better!! the recent work is great!

one thought: that slanted bridge is a bit of a hidden danger.

walking it I realized that the surface is really slippery. both my feet and tires were slidding which made me think: it's just a matter of time before someone's tires slide right out from under them. and since you can hit that thing with good speed....that would not be pretty.

Must have seen you as I was there myself late Monday starting from the canal side about 3:45. (silver GF HiFi) Yes, park was in excellent shape.

Actually, I was surprised to see a bridge in that spot at all. Sue, I, and company used to enjoy charging down that slope and splashing thru the stream and up the slippery bank on the opposite side on hot summer days. However just coming back from 2 mos off because of an injury, I looked at the slant on the bridge and said, uh-uh, I'm gonna be a sissy and walk this. When I got on it, I was happy with my decision as my feet (and tires) were slipping just tryin to walk across.

About 3/8 mi in from So Middlebush (heading towards Rte 27) there's a little trench/stream crossing with a partial bridge down in the bottom of the trench (not really a bridge, just a wood platform about 4 ft long). There used to be a higher bridge to the right of this that's gone now. In the trench, There's a gap about a ft long before the platfom starts. I used to ride through this all the time, but I thought I remembered some chatter about somebody doing a header there recently getting their wheel caught in the gap. I was by myself so I decided to walk it. Is this a real concern or am I just being overly cautious? I looked around for a nice flat rock to fill the gap but I realized this is 6 Mile, there are no rocks.

Thanks to all who help put such great work into this park. Would like to get to help someday.

The slanted bridge isnt bad to ride. Its up to you if you want to ride it. As for the ditch after middlebush. That thing is getting pretty nasty. Def easier hitting it going towards middlebush than back towards 27. Id like to move the log bridge back into place. Just need some help. Its only a few feet away upside down.

wasnt me. I was there late pm Tuesday. saw a few other bikers: one duo (one being the mysterious balaclava guy); one guy I passed going back towards S. Middlebush on the Rt 27 side (think he was wearing a blue and/or gray shirt) and another guy right near the aforementioned bridge who was coming in from the road... he must of taken go-around-on-the-road route 🙂

If you were either of them...sorry I didnt stop for pleasantries. I was running out of daylight very quickly and had to get out of the park quickly since my light sucks - I had 10+ miles still to go since I parked off the towpath beyond South Bound Brook. my light is fine for the towpath but sucks in real woods/trails.

I'm not puss when it comes to riding but I wouldn't ride that slanted bridge near Blackwells... I had to be rescued this weekend. If your tires slide off you could easily hit your face on the decking and slash it open as you enter the water... glass half empty. Let's keep the uneccessary injuries to a min. Riding something potentially unsafe puts the park in jepardy.

agree. the problem is too, that it looks safe. I rode over it on the way out and didnt give it a second thought. it was only when I walked it (due to a poor approach angle) that I realized the hazard - I had to fight my feet and tires from slidding down it.

frankly, the danger is that it is doesnt look like a hazard.

I could be wrong but I think it will take just a few guys to pick it up and set it straight. I cant help this weekend but might have an opportunity to help some late afternoon next week.

You guys are right. Im sure many people have riden it like it is and had no clue it was dangerous. It was stable enough for me to ride so I did, I didnt notice the surface. If it is that bad it should at least be blocked off for now till something can be fixed.

The slanted bridge will be fixed shortly. Look for some new bridges in the next few months. Dimensions have been taken and we are gathering materials.

guys,

this would only be our third time at 6m so i dont know how it gets after some rain. with what we've had so far, will 6m be rideable tomorrow? it's an hour from us. So i dont want to waste the trip. thanks!!!

with cooler temps 6m will take a week to dry out to where conditions will be superb. Riding it when its wet and muddy DESTROYS the trails not advised to ride.

Was anyone here today?

We stopped by late in the day (3:00). Park was in surprisingly good shape, with just a few muddy spots here and there. Most were in the small cedar forest just past Middlebush heading towards 27 (not the twisties). Not much mud though and the mudholes were relatively small. We rode the the center slowly. Traction was excellent throughout the park.
