Probably averaged 14 mph first loop and 18 on second. Pulled bike out of garage with two flats. Pumped them up but could hear the disc brake rubbing the whole first loop. When I stopped to check. Rear wheel would only spin about three times while off the ground before stopping. Played with breaks a bit and was much more fun the second loop. Even spotted Wayne the local legend on my second loop. Sucks being the slowest 60+ year old on your own block.

Fogged Up
We didn’t get that much ran in my immediate area but I also didn’t want a repeat of yesterday where I clear all the wet off of everything along the trail, so stuck to the road.
It felt OK at first but as sunrise approached the low fog blew up and it was back to a dewpoint massacre. Sunrise was great Again.

29 of 31. Kate and I went out on the canal for an easy post-Kate-birthday spin. Beautiful morning.

While we were cruising along, we passed a dude walking beside his bike. He looked beat. We stopped and asked if he was ok. He had a flat. I didn’t have my patch stuff with me. He didn’t know how far he had to go to get to the next town.

Long story short - on a rusted out Mongoose with no brakes, the dude had ridden from Bayonne and flatted in Hillsborough. He was trying to get to work and avoid paying for the train.

So Kate and I decided to do a pay-it-forward thing, told him to walk to Griggstown, we’d meet him there and see if we could patch him up. Kate and I turned around, packed up, drove home and drove back to Griggstown where we found him with someone else already helping him out. We swapped out his valve core, put a patch on the flat tube, got his front brake to sorta work, and sent him on his way.

And we didn’t get murdered.

Life on two wheels.

Kate and I hopped back on the bikes to finish out the hour. I normally don’t ride with a floor pump in my jersey pockets.

One day I would love to rent a place up here for a month or the whole summer, work remotely, and ride these trails every day. That would be pretty sweet. Of course, I might get bored of this after a summer so maybe I'll just mostly come up when Jim does.

A month at KT would be about three weeks too long. But a week in Rutland, a week in Stowe, a week in Burlington, and a week at KT sounds like a pretty good month.

I was thinking that Summering in Squamish would be pretty awesome. That would require the wife quitting her job or getting a different job that could be done full remote though.

July 28th I think this puts me over 20 now

Snuck in a gravel ride after work. There was finally some rain near the tail end of the ride. Nearly family vacation time up in Cape Cod, which I am pretty excited about. Now it is the, "which bike do I bring?" game. Fattie and gravel rig might check all the boxes.

I agree with that. It's been awhile since I've been to KT as I've been enjoying other locations around VT.

We should discuss this further.

Thursday, July 28

2hr, 7min

I wasn't able to start this ride until after 2pm, so it was likely during the maximum heat and humidity of the day. The thermometer on my car indicated 90F when I arrived at the parking lot, although it didn't feel quite that warm.

The high heat and humidity made it feel like I was riding in Cambodia, not Wildcat Ridge.

At the end of the ride I found the bat cave and hung out in front of it for about 5 minutes basking in the cool air. The air from the cave was so much cooler - I would estimate around 60F. It almost started to feel as though the air was too cold 🥶.
