I actually enjoy them.

Utah shares your opinion. But like I said to Utah it's because he hates being with himself. Anything slow like that, you have to sort of self-reflect. He hates being caged up with his own thoughts. Similarly, you are also a little batshit crazy. So I get why you wouldn't want to hang out with you.

I'm with Brett. Sorta. I mean it's great if you need to get somewhere to do something cooler and there is snow in the way.
Or maybe you're a habitual hiker and today there's snow. Okay I get it. Or if it's a legit hiking trail and you want to do it. Okay.
But people drive all the way to Miniwaska, rent snowshoes, and then shit up all the rail trails with them in their tough mudder shirts.
Or maybe you're geriatric. Who knows.
I love being alone, but i also live on a planet where cross country skis exist. It's way better.

I also see a lot of people who drive to Minnewaska to rent XC skis and use them like snow shoes. They are clueless to form and technique. But this really doesn't matter, nor does it matter that people are clueless on snow shoes as well. What does matter is that you enjoy what you do, no matter how shitty you do it.

Yes im with Brett, and it has nothing to do with being alone with my thoughts....other than I would be alone and thinking..."wtf am I doing out here wearing clown shoes?" If I have to walk my ass up a huge hill, why do I want to walk back down it? At least XC skiing allows you to be completely terrified for a few moments while you slide downhill totally out of control.

I hit up the tourne tonight for 1:40. After a few days, there are now a good amount of tracks so it wasnt nearly as tough as Tuesday. Some areas are nicely packed down. I did make my way through the new trail that we built in the fall which was untracked. I did manage to crash into a tree while bombing down red.

I actually hate being interrupted when I'm in my thoughts. I find most people low functioning and boring so I kinda love hangin out w me😀 That aside, I want my accessories to multiply my energy. Shoes help the first guy in 18" plus but then it's just a walk for all behind. The other day I saw about 8 peeps in shoes fully decked out w/ packs n poles pushing thru a hellish 8" at KVSP in a lemming line. Thought about skating over and explaining evolution and natural selection to them so they could apply it to their current chosen activity but hey, they're food to me, why bother😀 And now back to trail skiing!!!

skied out my back door and into the rockaway river WMA yesterday. the trails there are in great shape from the snowmobilers "grooming"

Wow, that is awesome. I am jelly right now. I'm gonna see if Bard(Mahlon is his backyard) wants to switch housing arrangements for the next few months.

Thinking waway tmw morning fur a couple of hours. Mahlon has just enough crust to make it miserable in the untracked stuff. Would love some company because I can't be in my own head that long, I'm afraid of what I might find. My self loathing runs deep.....

Do you guys have a shop to recommend for skis? I've been looking online at full set-ups but I think I want to buy from a shop so I get the right size.

Also, I like this thread because trail skiing is what I've hope to get into too.

There is Neal's and Campmor, both located up north. I know REI has stuff too but don't really know what they carry In stores. Neals is like a hole in the wall, with a back door entrance but the guy knows his stuff.

I'm not undersanding the hate directed at snowshoes? First of all, there's no way skis could bust through the crust that's out there now, so w/o a snowshoer going first (or a snowmobile), you're sitting in the parking lot, wishing you had snowshoes. Second, I prefer them b/c you can go offtrail or backcountry much easier that skis. Third, sure they're slower, but have you ever gone UP a double diamond downhill ski trail? I have in snowshoes; not possible in xc skis. Fourth, going down a steep trail loaded with snow is one of the most fun things I've done. Fifth, what the hell do you care what I wear on my feet? Just get out there and ENJOY!

I'll let you know later tonight, but I can probably make that. I drive a matchbox car though, so I might not make it to the actual circle.
I'll do a test run at mahlon later and see how conditions held up. Brett is checking mooch but I'm betting the crust is thicker there
