2015 Trail Skiing Thread

I'm not undersanding the hate directed at snowshoes? First of all, there's no way skis could bust through the crust that's out there now, so w/o a snowshoer going first (or a snowmobile), you're sitting in the parking lot, wishing you had snowshoes. Second, I prefer them b/c you can go offtrail or backcountry much easier that skis. Third, sure they're slower, but have you ever gone UP a double diamond downhill ski trail? I have in snowshoes; not possible in xc skis. Fourth, going down a steep trail loaded with snow is one of the most fun things I've done. Fifth, what the hell do you care what I wear on my feet? Just get out there and ENJOY!

I think people are addicted to hating. We have snow shoes and we used them a few times already, probably will again. The thing is, aren't we in this whole "outdoors" thing together? Just get out the door and enjoy it.

You know what's boring? Paying bills, shopping for socks. Shit like that.

Trail Skiing Thread. DO NOT speak of snowshoes:getsome: Couldn't think of a more boring thing to do.....worthless "sport"!

actually, what has been completely worthless is my xc skis on this terrible snow. IF i don't break a line with the shoes, i'm not skiing. the end. and why the hell would i drive 25 minutes to a park when i can drive 5 and ski the trails i built?

I actually enjoy them.

Utah shares your opinion. But like I said to Utah it's because he hates being with himself. Anything slow like that, you have to sort of self-reflect. He hates being caged up with his own thoughts. Similarly, you are also a little batshit crazy. So I get why you wouldn't want to hang out with you.

i wouldn't say i "enjoy" them, but right now they are a necessary evil for breaking trail. plus i don't want to run the roads right now b/c i don't feel like slipping and falling on my face.

I'm with Brett. Sorta. I mean it's great if you need to get somewhere to do something cooler and there is snow in the way.
Or maybe you're a habitual hiker and today there's snow. Okay I get it. Or if it's a legit hiking trail and you want to do it. Okay.
But people drive all the way to Miniwaska, rent snowshoes, and then shit up all the rail trails with them in their tough mudder shirts.
Or maybe you're geriatric. Who knows.
I love being alone, but i also live on a planet where cross country skis exist. It's way better.

true, skis are more better, but see point 1.

only point is that i'd fully disagree with is with regards to BC on skis. totally doable and in some cases, easier than snow shoes.

all that said...i went out this morning for an hour and broke more trail. i'll be doing it again tomorrow with the hope that by sunday i've got a pretty solid, skiable loop in.

so shut it, goat! 😀

Crust schmust. Just get in the backseat and skate it or take it to the ankles like men(or women). This shizz is so fun it should be illegal. You think it should come easy:popcorn:

Do you guys have a shop to recommend for skis? I've been looking online at full set-ups but I think I want to buy from a shop so I get the right size.

Also, I like this thread because trail skiing is what I've hope to get into too.

Action Bike and Outdoors, 611 Broad st , Milford PA. Alpina BC and Madshus BC in stock😀

We seriously need to Gopro some stuff for you so you can see what can be done. Sentences 2 and 3 had me :hysterica. I totally respect your fondness of assisted winter walking and think you should start a dedicated thread for it. Peace, love ,out....................

I would rather watch paint dry seriously. There is nothing hardcore, almost as exciting watching mtb x/c racing.

Snowshoeing is a workout period, better then a couch and doubles up as fatbike trail building.

Things have changed a lot since you've been out last. I think that tomorrow we're goin up that gully over by the dump that we've traversed the day your binding/boot blew out. Take the fatty to Stokes. There's probably 15-20 miles of snowmobile groom. Why kill yourself😕

All good, my post disappeared. Got out tonight and conditions are excellent. Faint remnants of our last ski but easily tracked thru. Jakey get your ass out with us and hang those shoes back on the wall

Limping back after that binding fail was last day on x/c skis, yes miss them. As long as there are alternative means it's all good...

Stokes-
Thanks maybe that's my Sunday!

Why I love this place where we argue what to strap or clip on our feet to venture in pure cocaine in NJ's biggest meat locker while 92% are locked up 19 hours in front of 55" flat vision of boredom with someone they probably hate.

Longest sentence ever

HE's Skiing On One SKI!!!!

Little rough out there today for me, but you gotta be in it to win it and..........some things only happen once in a lifetime but some happen twice! I"ll leave the recap to 26r cause I wont do it justice:hysterica Missed y'all out there...

I drank too many Nugget Nectars last night and wasn't able to get moving early enough to join you guys. Thanks for laying down some tracks for me though. I was following your tracks coming down through the WMA after crossing the power lines. I had no clue where I was and then all of a sudden I was at the blue trailhead. Nice job avoiding the railbed!

Looking to get on trails tomorrow, Mahlon? Anything else good? Jim/Bret/26er you guys what u doing? Does 26er have any equipment left?

I'm driving up to Killington tomorrow and won't have time to get out before we leave. Mahlon was great today though, should be tomorrow as well.

Ringwood was absolutely perfect today. I cut trail for about 4 miles and did about 4 miles of snowmobile trail. My hips are f'ing killing me from cutting trail in deep snow.

Not doin anything formal today and 26rs mia. I'm destroyed and have a chunk of meat hanging off my foot where my heel used to be😀

Got out today solo at Mahlon. 26er managed to rip a boot in half, I saw the picture on FB and was amazed...and Bret fagged out. I have to say I was wipped out today but managed to make the skis go. After 3hrs of skate skiing yesterday my lungs are fried, it felt like I raced yesterday and my legs did not want to move too quickly today.

I followed 26er and Bret's tracks from yesterday and ended up doing basically the same 8 mile loop as last week in under 2hrs. There was a bit more bushwacking to bypass the rail trail but still managable. Heading out at 9:30 the snow was a bit glazed over in the tracks which made it hard to track my ski and climbing was difficult since my fishscales would not bite into the iced up snow. Coming back the snow softened up, which made for better conditions.

Not sure what kinda snow/rain is heading our way but I could use a couple recovery days on the bike. XC skiing is a full body workout, I feel wiped out from this past weekend.
