2013/2014 XC Ski Thread

Got plenty of snow at Hartshorne but with the winds and the ultra light snow with no base you hit every rock on the trail. The only thing skiiable there is the fire road. Allaire is probably skiing nicely though.

i havent been in the park since the snow, but living a mile away, i can say that they got 5 inches. the fire roads are probably in great conditions, the single track might be a little rocky

I think 5" for Mahlon is a conservative estimate. Would love to hear trail reports as well as I'm probably going to hit it up Saturday

Also take into account the density of the snow. This was a very light powderey snow. Normally 5"-8" is enough to cover rocks at Mahlon, the reports I've been getting is that this snow cover ain't doing it as far as providing good cover over rocks up north.
I'm going to head to Watchung tomorrow and I'll post up a report, they recieved 10-12" there. Plus hikers and skiers will have it packed down by then.

I skied the grass in the gardens at Ringwood today, and there is not even enough cover for the carriage road 🙁. I am guessing that the areas with more snow are all on the east side of the state.

Skied the Watchung Reservation after work. Light fluffy snow that was not great at covering roots and rocks but most of it was beat down by snowshoe'ers and hikers...and Vreeland with his fat bike.

I got the full loop in and finished up in the dark, which was fun.

Yeah Watchung is in good shape. Looks like they got a fresh 3" from yesterdays snow. I did an 8 mile loop in there this morning.

Went over to Allaire today after work for about an hour. Conditions where poor, a lot of the snow has melted on the trails, coverage was very spotty. After the freeze tonight the remaining snow and slush should all freeze up tight. MTBing will be better but there will be frozen ruts all over.

This was the better section of Allaire, some spots had no snow. Was anyone in Wangchung today, how where the conditions?

If u were on strava, u'd know I was at Watchung tonight.

Still totally snow covered, and well packed from lots of foot traffic. Pretty smooth surface, no ruts or deep footprints.

That said, I opted for running rather than skiing tonight. As much as I generally despise running and enjoy skiing, I've found that running in the snow is actually pretty fun, and i can go much faster running than skiing.

The key to the fun is the right shoes...
