2013/2014 XC Ski Thread

If u were on strava, u'd know I was at Watchung tonight.

Still totally snow covered, and well packed from lots of foot traffic. Pretty smooth surface, no ruts or deep footprints.

That said, I opted for running rather than skiing tonight. As much as I generally despise running and enjoy skiing, I've found that running in the snow is actually pretty fun, and i can go much faster running than skiing.

The key to the fun is the right shoes...

Studded running shoes? Interesting. Ever try just trail running specific shoes? That's what I use - tho haven't tried a snow trail run yet.

We got a dusting up north and it did wonders. Seems denser now, just getting bored with the golf course. We could use 4-5 inches more ,.... TWSS!

I got out after work on the golf course to skate ski. Normally I have to travel to a place that grooms trails to skate but with a firm base and 2"of fresh snow on top conditions where ideal for skating, which is much more fun then classic imo.

I couldn't embed this video but here is a link to it on flickr. Me skate skiing without poles, you can hear the geese on the golf course in the background.

Mahlon is in prime condition. Couple of exposed rocks but overall very nice. Icy where its all tracked in but if you can find some freshies its great.

Got over to wangchung tonight for an hour. I was surprised at how much quality snow there was still on the trails. If you go out tomorrow make sure you wait until temps are above freezing to let the snow soften up for traction/control, otherwise you will be on ice/glassed over snow.

Tomorrow I'm gonna head to a golf course to see if conditions are right for skate skiing, my backup is classic at wangchung.

The snow set up well this morning for skate skiing at the local golf course. Firm base with softer top to track a ski in. The first hour was better, things got softer in the last hour(twss).

There is still enough snow left but I don't think the temp will get cold enough tonight to tighten up the snow to make a solid base. Classic will be the better choice tomorrow. I may just ride my mtb somewhere instead.

Selfie on the snow.

Watchung was spotty this afternoon. Lots of bare sections but some good sections as well

Hartshorne is skiing pretty good with about 8" new heavy snow, the front loop is broken out and packed.

I hope some of you were able to get out today, because it was beautiful. Art and I did a slightly more epic ski at Harriman. Conditions were tough to figure with wax. Had to stop 3 times to change, but finally got it to work. Snow was denser than the last storms, but still hit some rocks that caused us to do the jiggle.😀 We could use a little more snow up here.

I got out locally at the Tourne for about 1.5 hours after work today. There was enough cover to ski everything, although there were some rocks poking out here and there on the side trails. Hopefully tonight/tomorrow is mostly snow and little rain. It's possible we'll be skiing for weeks if these storms line up right.

One can only hope😀

Got out to Watchung after work, about 6:30. I went out with no lights and did 1.5 hr loop, it was the most beautiful time out this year. The ground was white, the sky was a dull orange and the canopy of the trees were white from the snow sticking to the branchs. The only darkness was on the treetrunks. The snow was a variety of tracked/packed/loose pow, it all depended on the amount of traffic. And I heard the owls hooting at me as I made my way solo through the woods. It was magical.

We had a similar experience at Thompson last night. Mark, ChristineG, and I went out at about 5:30pm and skied for about 2 hours with headlamps. The tracks were awesome. The sky, snow, owls and foxes were magical. There was a fire and hot chocolate outside the Ski Hut when we were done. Great rental equipment too. Awesome to have something like that 10 miles from your house. Thanks to the Monmouth County Parks system for making this happen.

Post holing^

Got over to watchung in the dark tonight. Conditions sucked, crust over 8" of snow. We need the snow shoe-ers to get in there and pack that shit down. If you have snow shoes this is when it makes sense to use them. I see most guys on snow shoes on hardpack after a trail is beaten in. It still felt good to be in the woods after dark.

Happy Hour.

Similar conditions at the Tourne today. Going uphill was really difficult, and my ski kept getting caught under the ice crust. It was pretty frustrating at times, and I had to keep telling myself, "this is still better than the elliptical."
