2013/2014 XC Ski Thread

I went up to High Point and got about 11 miles in today. It was my first time on groomed trails, and the conditions were totally awesome. Planning on heading back up there tomorrow to ski until my legs fall off.

Watchung was tough sledding. There were some sections that are nice but few and far between. On the plus side there is a ton of snow so maybe with this storm and some warmer temps to melt the ice a bit it could be nice.

I went back up to Minnewaska today and conditions were even better than Friday. I imagine they will hold this way until rain, or temps go above freezing up there.

Luke: I have a pair of skate skis you can borrow any time. They have nnn binding. 🙂

Santalucia, Iggy and Brett

I went out to Wangchung yesterday and the snow was crap. It was crusted over and even where trail was broken mini iceburgs made for very difficult navigation/flow. There is a lot of snow out there on trails but like Tichlo said until we get a warm up and this stuff softens its useless. On a positve not it will get better and there is lots of it.

So today I went up to High Point with 26er and Brett. They ran classic while I skated, at one point they did some ungroomed stuff and we re-grouped. Conditions where not great in the skating lane, since they did not groom Sunday morning. They groomed yesterday, but given the high volume of hikers and snowshoers up there they should have regroomed Sunday. But hey whatever, it was still better then ungroomed stuff.
They had some great down hills and good Battenkill training climbs. We found Jim N toward the end of the day and skied together for a short time. Overall it was a good day on skis. Fun fast miles for sure.

Another awesome day at High Point. I did the same 11 miles as yesterday, but it took 20 minutes longer due to sore legs. Nice to see some familiar faces for a bit. I got a late start since it was cold this morning and I ended up sleeping in. Hopefully the snow holds up til next weekend, because I don't think I'll have any time to get out this week.

We should plan other trip to Minnewaska this week. Right now I can't lift up my leg.

I wanna try skate skis!
Does the mohonk side groom? I have annual pauses for there and tons of free guest passes

It was great to see Iggs and chat up some ladies while on the trail, but i hate groomed. Back to the woods for this mountain devil😀

Crazy that iggs avg'd 1.5mph more than we did. Maybe there's something to this skate skiing thing. Everything hurts today

I heard Mohonk is closed due to a deadly virus but it might be just the hotel. I think that's why the news Van was there Iggy.

2 much Iggy

Yeah, Jimmy your right. I've haven't heard solid reports about grooming at Mohonk. It may change by the weekend. In any case Minnewaska is only $6 for a trail pass and they do an outstanding job grooming. We can monitor it as we get closer to the weekend, more snow is on the way😀 Oh, and its my younger sons birthday this weekend, I think we are having his family party Saturday...so we'd have to do Sunday in New Paltz.

About 5 yrs. ago I was XC skiing at a small groomed center called Grafton in VT. It was New years day and it was cold as hell, I think the high was 2 degrees. As I was leaving I saw a group of skate skiers heading out to the trails. I was entranced by the beauty of the technique, 4 people drafting each other, each mirroring the skier in front of him. That image stayed in my head and made me want to investigate that style of xc skiing.

This has been a good year for XC skiing. With 2" of powder today on top of hard pack I was able to skate on the golf course after work. This is awesome on so many levels; I'm skate skiing, I didn't have to drive to a groomed center, I didn't have to pay for trail grooming, I'm able to work on my technique, I'm not loosing fitness cause i aint riding my bike.

How does skiing on a golf course work? Fight club / don't ask don't tell?

Like I told Jimmy last week...when you ask for permission you give people the opportunity to say no. Act like you belong there and people leave you alone.

My wife just told me Jamie's bday party is Sunday. I have off Monday for presidents day if anyone wants to road trip to New Paltz.

I operate under the same principle everyday. If work calls, I must answer. Otherwise, all bets are off 😀
