2013/2014 XC Ski Thread

Do any sports shops around rent XC skis and/or snow shoes?

Pelican Sports only seems to rent alpine ski equipment.

Looking for Morris county or others nearby.

If not, anthing up by Highpoint?

Thanks!

High Point rents. Its a groomed xc ski center as well, which is a good place to learn. Trying to negotiate turns your first time out on single track mtb trails can be frustrating.

i watched the mens xc skiing from saturday on the olympics last night (recorded) we were glued to the TV. skate skiing looks like lots of fun..i could not believe the sustained speeds these guys were keeping..it was nuts.

I think it is really cool that so many people in NJ have become interested in XC skiing. It is a great way for people of all ages to get outside without spending a lot of money. Not to scare more of you off, but I saw a bunch of old folks the last few times I went out. I thought that was pretty cool that they were out doing their thing.

I grew up alpine skiing when it was affordable, but now it is fairly pricey if you take the whole family. Sorry to go on with the "I remember when's" but I used to ski after school for a $1 at the local hill. It is close to $100 at a big resort for an adult ticket now. The last time I alpine skied I had a discount card for a $50 ticket. At 11:00 I was totally bored feeling like I got $20 worth and wishing I could ski up the mountain for more of a workout. ... now I just XC ski for free.

I must say, this year there has been so much skiing, that I am starting to get bored with golf course and groomed. I think I need a big dump, so I can ski the woods. 😀

ive gotten so fed up with resort experiences...i try and go once a year or so to a decent place, especially now that my wife is learning to ski more, but ive been getting into the backcountry scene way more now. its WORLDS better than resort skiing.

Before the Storm

I agree Ellen, its seems that skiing down hill has gotten pricey. But like anything else if I really wanted to do it I'd find the money to make it happen. To be honest, at this point in my life I enjoy xc skiing way more then downhill and thats what I dedicate my time and money for. If I had an endless supply of money and time then I'd be on my tele skis on a resort somewhere too😀

XC skiing has such an organic feel to it for me, it compliments my cycling training and I like the same go explore out doors feel I get...just like being on a bike. Also there is always technique to work on to perfect a style.

After work today I took advantage of the great conditions to skate ski on the golf course. I'm finding that my HR is going down and my speed is going up. I'd like to think that my technique and fitness level are improving on the skis. Maybe I'll enter the old man olympics for xc skiing when I retire and move to Canada.

Hey did you hear its gonna snow tomorrow?

Thanks, Jimmy. I forgot about Dover Sports and they are nearby.

Cool. Thanks Chris for the details on Highpoint.

I only get to XC ski every few years or so. It seems that I only go when I am out west for alpine skiing. Last time I did XC was in Jackson, WY in the Grand Tetons and Steamboat on Rabbit Ears pass around 9,000 feet elevation. I should try something closer to sea level in NJ.

I've never tried Telemark skiing and Jackson Hole is the place where I always see a lot of telemark skiers. I think that is the place to try it.

Yeah me too. Biathalon is cool too.

All events are available for streaming on NBC Sports so I've been watching online as I don't subscribe to cable TV service.

I grew up alpine skiing when it was affordable...

Last weekend we did Camelback and the Twilight ticket. $35 from 3-10. I'm a beginner so 7 hours is twice as much as I need to get my fill. In all fairly reasonable when you compare to those $80-100 price tags for all day passes. As a bonus, the slopes are almost kid-free and many of the adults have gone home for the day. Lift lines are more or less gone by 7:00 too.

I know, I know, you go to bed by 6pm every night... 😉

* caveat: I understand Camelback sucks for experienced skiers. I'm not there yet.

I'm hoping to sneak out to the Tourne early this afternoon, and I'm thinking Mahlon for tomorrow. Post up conditions if anyone gets out anywhere.

there is ALOT of snow out there now..which is awesome..but im going to go ahead and let someone else break in the xc ski track in mahlon. I was at the snowbowl yesterday with my snowboard and it was tough enough to stay above the snow then.

I skied Ringwood today and although it was warm and beautiful outside, it was pretty crappy conditions for skiing: breakable crust layer a few inches down. I may try groomed over the weekend: Minnewaska or Faunstock.

Man that jacket is awesome. I'm going to wear that to any weddings I get invited to in the future. I may race in it this year.

I expect Mahlon to be tough tomorrow, but I'll probably give it a shot anyway. Failing that, I'll be halfway to High Point as a backup plan.
