2013/2014 XC Ski Thread

Odd question

Is zero degrees cold tomorrow in sunny upstate ny? Will I manage with only UA cold gear LS shirt and tights and my snowboard pants and snowboard jacket?

Are u downhill skiing or xc skiing?
You should dress for xc like you do for cycling in the cold. wear stuff that wicks and breathes, you should be a little cold at first then warm up without sweating too much.
If your downhill-ing then wear a lot of clothes, it your hot u can always leave a layer in the lodge.

I wish I had an xc setup. Maybe nexy yr. I tried to find the ski/board thread but I went three pages in a gave up and resorted to asking here.

Downhill snowboarding in Windham tomorrow. I never snowboarded in zero degrees...
Yea imma try one more layer than usual.

Just make sure to cover the face. The wind can choke you when it's cold like that. I've been out in windy subzero conditions DH skiing. Besides getting the wind choke, I also remember how cold my ass got sitting on the lift.

Great day skate skiing at Minnewaska. I ended up going solo but found some folks on skate ski's on the trails. They where real smooth, I followed them and honed my skills. The grooming was not great but passable. For $6 I can't complain too much.

That's awesome, I've done that loop like 10 times on my bike. Wonder how it would be on the groomed trails on the fat bike?

Not 100% sure but I think the groomed track at minni is closed to bike and foot traffic during ski season.

Yeah Luke, going into groomed XC ski trails on a bike is a big no-no. Skiers would tackle u and beat u about the head with their ski poles.

Got out this morning at Watchung Res. before the ice/rain drizzle. There has been a lot of traffic in there over the past few days which beat the trails down nicely. Not sure how its going to make out after this precip, hopefully somewhere in NJ still has snow in the coming days. Post up reports of your area so we can chase the snow.

Friday night, me aaron and John hit the power line easement at mahlon...the one that is under construction. This was pretty entertaining bc the road was wide and there were plenty of steep up and downs. Couple that were a little scary on XC skis. I think we ended up with about a 5 mile out and back.

Saturday, went to Johnathan woods in denville with my dogs and did another 1:45 and 5 miles

Yesterday, myself, 26er and Brett did this loop at mahlon. ~10miles and 2:45 moving. Other than my feet bleeding from the wearing on my heels and toes, I was feeling ok. Good workout for sure. This was my ~5th xc skiing experience...its ok, better than the trainer, not nearly as enjoyable as downhill skiing or biking, but it was a nice change of pace. I might like it a little more if going downhill on xc skis wasnt so ridiculous.

So I pulled my binding out of my ski on Saturday.

Is this fixable?

Wow, not only is the binding ripped out but you delaminated the ski. Someone could probably rig that to make it work but I'd say its time for new skis. What kind of boots where u using, touring or BC. Looks like u put a lot of torque on the binding to do that or the ski itself failed.

You would probably like more BC stuff with elevation, a beefier ski with sidecut to turn with, a 3 pin binding and 2 buckle boot to drive bigger skis.

Hopefully I can join u guys at some point this winter, either downhill or xc.

agreed, Im sure my equipment could be better...but im cheap and we just dont get enough snow around here for me to make a big investment in this. It was worth it for yesterday....when I was going down that steep downhill that runs parallel to anthrothers and screaming "GOING TO DIE" the entire way.

I don't think its Delaminated, thats just a footplate attatched to the front binding. The screws looks like they came out fairly cleanly.

I have Rossi X-2s

Heli coil will fix this. Any ski shop should be able to do this just give a call first to make sure. You could probably do this yourself with a tap set and order the heli coils.

Put some epoxy and steel wool into the binding holes, put the screws back in tighten them up and let the epoxy dry and it should hold. Newer skis have foam cores so bindings sometimes pull out of them.

so I brought them to a shop and the guy said that the plugs wouldn't hold so it looks like I'm in the market for some new / used skis

If any of you guys have a pair you are looking to sell let me know.

Was skiing on fischer spider 180s, looking for something similar, maybe a little more beef for the un-groomed trails
