2010/2011 XC Ski Thread

madschus glittertind. they should come by Monday, so expect the snow to stop then.

Nice choice, they have been around for awhile. Proven performer, bc performance with traditional length for some nice kick n glide as well...can't go wrong with that.
The snow is going to stop in April😀

Thursday 1/27

Well I stopped counting how many snows we've had and I don't bother to measure snow fall anymore. It snows every week and I measure snow as light, moderate or heavy...yesterday was heavy.

I couldn't make it into work this morning because my street had heavy snow. So I snowblowed(is that a word?) 8 houses in my neighborhood then went xc skiing at Watchung Reservation.

I had a good core workout today snow-blowing then plowing through the heavy snow on xc skis. It took me 2 hrs.to cover what I usually cover in 1hr on the skis. I was hoping the snow shoe folks would have beaten down the trails but they only covered ground a mile from the parking lot. Conditions where rough, heavy wet snow that was grabby on the skis. This wknd should get better as temps get colder and more people are out to beat down the trails.

I managed to get out for 2 hours in Waway. Broke trail on Pumphouse, turned around and headedback across the beach to the boat house. Had to cut it short since the sun was already behind the mountain when I left Pumphouse.

Trying to get tomorrow figured out. Day is starting down by Iggy, hoping to end up in Sussex Co. Maybe hit Stokes- the free side.

I went out with Jdog on my first tru xc ski at six mile today. After we dug ourselves out of the joques ln lot. 😀

We spent about 2 plus hours breaking our own tracks. It was good hard fun. I learned that I do need some wider skis. I think mine are meant for groomed type tracks.

Prob heading out tomorrow again.

Pixy are the old skis going up for sale?

First tracks are always a bear. J may have had an advantage today with wider skis but your skis will do better this wknd after the snow shoer's, hikers and other xc skiers beat down 6mile.

Just wanted report back on conditions up north: I've been sick so I'm just getting out today, and conditions at Ringwood were AWESOME!!! The snow is a bit heavy but it totally covers rocks. You can ski just about anywhere. The roads are packed by snowmobiles and ideal for first timers and those not too keen on breaking track, or just to cover ground to get to more snow. Enjoy!

Friday 1/28
Went to Thompson park in Lincroft today after work. This part of Monmouth co received less snow than up north but still moderate cover.
Nice tracks laid down by other skiers, got in 2 hrs. of trails here this evening.

I'm heading to 6miles tomorrow to meet Jdog at 7:30 is anyone wants to tag along...27 lot.

Sat. 1/29

I broke ground at 6 mile from the 27 lot side. The parking lot was not plowed so I parked at the office bldng. across the street. Making 1st tracks was tough, got a good core work out in. Making hop turns in the downhills was fun but the uphills where work. I make it to the new metal bridge then followed my tracks back.

The cedars took a hit with the last storm, a lot of blow downs and lean overs. The twisties near 27 are ok but the shorter cedars on the other side of the concrete bridge are all bent over and the trail is impassable.

1/29/11 - Probably had my best ski ever today! Started off of Clinton Rd near rt 23, and skied Newark Watershed on the other side of the lakes up to about Wawayanda, about 4 hours. Conditions up there were ideal. Untracked most the way. I was just following in a group so I can not give any details about were I was, as I had no idea. I am sure conditions at Waway are great as well.

Where did you guys park? We may check that out tmw.

I think we parked on Paradise Rd in a widened sectioned of road just beyond Schoolhouse Rd. We did a one way ski and had a car back at Upper Greenwood Lake to drive back to car. After looking at a map, I think we skirted along Clinton Reservoir, Buckabear and that general direction. If you find our tracks, you may be able to do an out and back also.

XC on the beach

I was just surfing Spring Lake and saw the surreal sight of XC skiing on the beach. But really I guess it makes perfect sense. You can go for as many miles as you want. I'm guessing it's more fun and interesting in the woods though, yes? Maybe like road riding compared to Mtn?
Anybody out there hitting the beach with the skis? Saw a bunch of tracks.

I would compare it to surfing on a wave tank/machine on a cruise ship vs Pipe line in Hawaii or XC @ Stowe. Just my 2 cents. It might be cool to try once for a different atmosphere but thats about it as far as I'm concerned. We have been XC skiing locally around Toms River( in the parks, not the town) and its been great not to need to travel to get good conditions.
