2010/2011 XC Ski Thread

Saturday 1/15
Met Brett & Chris 26er at the park in ride at Mahlon for a 3.5 hr. tour. Great conditions but I nearly killed myself on the trail across the road, I banged my knee pretty hard on the wall descent...ouch.

Monday 1/17
6 Mile fun with Brett & Jdog. This place was made for xc skiing, nice single track, fun elevation and no boulders in the trail. We did close to 4hrs today, the snow was packed from snowshoers but still soft enough to control skis in. Good times.

Glad we got that ski in yesterday. I feel like an 80 year old man this AM. 4 hours was plenty.

You can ice skate on my street this AM. Be super careful if you are out driving.

I think today would be a good day to mount up the studded tires. By Friday it should be perfect at 6mr on studs.

I know that feeling jdog. All I can say to you kids is: "wait til you are my age."

I had a a short but intense ski at Anthony Wayne yesterday, where I got pushed by some old guys 🙄. One inch of snow out there this morning, and I am not sure exactly what is coming out of the sky right now. Conditions should really change in the next few days. Skiing may be out, unless I go to Faunstock, where they groom.

This may be my one week a year to ride the trainer.😎

Six Mile was a blast today. Nice firm base with 3-4" on top.

It was 12 degrees but I was actually hot by the time I was done.

Almost ride ready. It would be really nice on a snow bike.

Harriman was very good today too. Frozen 6-10 inch base with 3-4 fresh on top. The frozen layer completely covers rocks. No breakable crust underneath. Very easy to break trail. Get out enjoy it while it lasts! 🙂

Friday 1/21
Skied the Watchung Reservation for 2 hrs. Good snow cover, even though the snow shoe-ers beat me to the trails.

Saturday 1/22
Went to Stokes with Hardtale for 3+hrs of xc ski fun. It was my first time here and loved it, I felt like I was in VT. Brett put together a fun loop and the conditions where great, nice 4" of fluffy snow on top of freeze dried snow base. Cover was good enough to keep our skis off of the rocks underneath.

Anyone XC Otto? I was out a few days ago with the dogs running around and it looked like some tracks have been layed. Looks like it could be a great place for XC as well.

Thoughts, as I am new to the XC (though I have had them for 6years).

I am not sure where Otto is, but I will say that xc skiing is like any other sport...the more you do it the better you'll get. There is a learning curve that comes with putting ski's on your feet, muscle memory plays a big part. Aerobic fitness will allow you to go longer but a good technigue will allow you to go longer, faster and be able to do it again the next day.
Choosing the terrain is up to you, flat lands and golf courses are easier to learn on, while twisty single track and elevation changes will take longer to be comfortable on. This is the basics of kick and glide xc skiing.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G3Vue10ItXg&feature=related
How often have you been out this year?

Chimney Rock is in great shape for x/c skiing. (Or for running if you're a siberian husky like my dog 🙂 )
Some challenging stuff for a noob like me, but you can go as hard or as easy as you want.

Here's my loop from yesterday.

It was the most fun I've ever had on the skis. I wore a snowboard helmet, which I've never done before on x/c skis, and that was a huge confidence booster for the steeper/narrower descents.
Actually felt in control...most of the time...😱

I skied Minnewaska today, and it was great, but very cold. They run a groomer on one big loop and the rest is skier tracked. The rain last week was all ice up there so it looked like diamonds on the trees with crazy amounts of ice.

Skiing a groomed track may or may not be your thing, but this ridge is really scenic and worth a visit if you live close enough.

Sunday 1/23
Went to Watchung Reservation at 6:45 this morning. I had to get an early start to get back in time to take my son to indoor soccer. It was kind of dark the first 20 min, but I had enough light to see with the moon out.

The snow was nicely tracked in from snow shoers, hikers and other skiers, which made for fast conditions yet the snow was still soft enough to steer. Made it back to the car in 2hrs, just in time to get to soccer.

I have heard good things about Minnewaska, when the snow dries up here I want to take a road trip to this place. I'd like to give skate skiing a shot.

Six mile run xc ski on Thursday for certain!

SO glad I got skis this year.

I'm hating you guys a little bit...🙂

And, yes, I know what the answer is, but not this year.

I ordered new skis a week ago , and I actually thought it would stop snowing. 🙄 Well, maybe it will stop snowing after the new skis are actually in my hands.
