From the mechanical point of view, it limits broadcasting. If you exhale heavily/cough, it will not travel as far. Anything that can limit, even a small percentage is not a bad thing.

i'm back, after my 1 day quarantine. Probably my only post for the day, to limit exposure.

Sure, they needed a made-for-tv drama script two months later because the public couldn't listen to the scientists,
and when polled, the public thought it was no biggie, so the elected government, to maintain approval ratings, reflected the concern level
of the people - which was dismissive. It is not the other way around.

Early numbers of exponential growth were compared to final flu numbers from a few years ago.
Why were they not compared to early numbers and the growth rate of that flu? (2+ compared to 1.3)
Why wasn't the hospitalization rate compared? (15%+ to 2%)
And why wasn't that clearly communicated?

Using the flu numbers that conspiracy theorist from @jdog's vid, he quoted
US numbers 45M/325M (13.8%)contracted the flu, 60k died: 0.15% - but only 2% required hospitalization
over a slower growth curve. This virus has more than 7x the need for hospital beds with a growth rate
of almost double (and double in terms of exponential, isn't a linear double - it is double in each "cycle")

these figures were known.

The mortality rate of the virus, is different than the overall rate, because people will
die that didn't have to, because care will not available. The mortality rate of the diamond princess is not
indicative of the final toll, because all of these people were treated.

Iran and Italy don't have a stronger strain, they just have a head start.

Edit:

the economy and small business will recover. it survived the depression. It survived the wars when no raw materials were available.
Potato famine, the dust bowl, lack of snow in the NJ.

many lives were ruined and/or lost in those examples.

Also, some N95 masks have a valve that let air going outside the mask. Would those let the virus out making them completely useless?
This, I have seen some suggestions that those who are infected should wear masks to prevent spreading,
but this was noted as a consideration. Yes, valve models wouldn't be effective.

With or without a valve, it's just minimizing the risk and absorbing the virus infected moisture the person is coughing/sneezing/breathing out. It's not like a non-valved mask seals everything in completely as there are still usually gaps somewhere, but it's still minimizing the chances.

As for healthy people wearing one, they say they don't help much because you are constantly adjusting the mask as they're not the most comfortable thing ever and then bring your virused hands to your face.

Stay home, no mask necessary. ?

So the best, but still iffy data about testing is what @rick81721 and I'm sure @Patrick have noted:

Spotty in a few ways, but the best we have to go by.
Scrolling through state testing rates (pos/neg/pending/death),
NJ is the only state where pos>neg, which (for the warts on the data) says something about the testing here.
Clearly selective due to availability I suspect, so that is a context for reviewing any of the state's numbers.

I thought this was a good podcast from USAC. It speaks more about staying healthy, how the germs spread, and how to train in these current times.
Most people on this thread are looking at bigger picture apocalypse topics so this may not work for you.

And the Dr on here seems to have some pretty legitimate credentials.

“Dr. Michael J Roshon, MD specializes in emergency medicine in Colorado Springs and has over 22 years of experience in the field of medicine. He's also a pro cycling team doctor and has worked with teams like UHC Pro Cycling and Cannondale-Garmin. Dr. Roshon is the Chief of Medical Staff for the Penrose Hospital system in Colorado Springs, and is on their COVID-19 task force, where he's the Medical Specialist on their incident response team. He has his Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology”.

i believe it is because the medical community needs the masks to treat everyone and there is a shortage already.

Yeah, my suspicion is the masks work to prevent you from getting/spreading the virus, but if everyone that doesn't really need them buys them, then the people that really need them can't get them.

Mr. Chainring
If what I said is valid... I have to question the recommendations that were made by government officials that only those infected should wear one.
Now if one wears it, ppl may assume that those who wears a mask is infected.
We should assume everyone is infected- mask or not. When we start mass testing then we can adjust and start to be certain that those around us are...
  • No longer contagious because they've already had the virus and recovered (I have no idea what the time frame is.)
  • Have no trace of the virus and are not infectious
I own my own business - no vacation pay, no sick leave, unable to collect unemployment. I'm trying to improvise and train clients remotely. I can survive and take care of my family for about 3 months with little to no income. I get others may not be so lucky (laughable term right now) but if we want this to end then we have to SOCIAL DISTANCE and KEEP AWAY FROM OTHERS. (see first paragraph).

The consequences can not be over stated. Look around you and imagine this life for 3-6 more months.

Rip off? I challenge you to a duel good sir.

I'd like to retract my statement about Wheel of Time. It was Sword of Shannara that I couldn't get through because it was a LOTR ripoff. I read Eye of the World but I don't remember if I liked it or not. I guess I liked it enough that I gave it to my father-in-law, and he read it and then bought all the other books to read. But I guess I didn't like it enough to read the other eleven books that he gave to me when he was done with them.

I also want the authorities to free all the prisoners.

For example, bring back @gtluke and @Dajerseyrat on a probationary basis. This isn't because I believe they should be free, but I just like F'ing with someone besides @rick81721 and @mattybfat (see my avatar.) That way when the long winded idiots who are on the conference call are talking and my cell is on mute so they don't hear the acerbic comments from moi, I have something to do.
