My local town borough made an emergency declaration since there are now two confirmed cases in the county. We now have caution tape around every park and public area within the town, with the exception of streets and sidewalks. Not that it would make a difference to my exercise routine, but I'm wondering if the NPS closes the recreation area just so that they can make use of the expensive gates that were installed.

The first book of this series is one of the best fantasy books I've ever read (note, it's been a long time, it may suck).

I have all these books if anyone is interested. I don't know if I even finished the first one, because I just couldn't get into it. Too much of a Lord of the Rings ripoff.

Rip off? I challenge you to a duel good sir. While there are Tolkien references, the world Jordan creates is one in its own. The true source, the seanchan, the multiple worlds and stories coming together is nothing like I've seen in any other fiction literature.

I probably didn't get far enough into the story. GRRM has ruined fantasy for me anyway.

I find irony in that COVID-19 can do to America what the terrorists have been trying to do for decades. Not meant as any kind of conspiracy theory etc, just a genuine observation. Mass fear and panic, looking at everyone else with the stink eye, trepidation upon leaving domicile, that kind of stuff.

This is the biggest problem with social media and sensational media. The "need" to create news and the need for attention has exacerbated this fear and mass panic. This world has never been more divided as people seek to fuel interest rather then help each other.

We have 4 kids and have also been losing our shit. I still have to work full time, so my wife has taken on "teaching duties". Today she realized this isnt just reviewing homework, she/we actually need to be the instructors. Homework reinforces things that at taught in school.... in the matter of a few days we're now into the "teaching at home" phase. Kids dont learn by watching a video or reading a paragraph, they learn by explanation (like when I explained in many ways what a "square foot" really is to my 8 year old today). They're no longer "doing homework", they've already reached the point of not knowing what the f@#$ they're supposed to do. Its not the teachers fault either, they didnt see this coming.

This is painful for all of us. I feel your pain. Deep breath and remember it's not the kids fault. They'll probably be telling "tales" to their grandchildren about these days.
All very true...im trying to have some fun with this topic, but ya, it has not been an easy few days. I mean when my wife's happy to go to the ER over teaching kindergarten, lol.....and man I only have 1 kid. I mean to me, this is really bad for a kid my sons age (im sure older kids too, I can only speak to what i have and know) I can only provide so much structure as im solo with him during the day and trying to work and teach him. Plus the whole kindergarten experience of learning a schedule, how to interact with piers, how to SIT QUIETLY for more they 4 seconds......All of that is going to suffer im sure.

I've got a middle schooler and a high schooler, and yesterday was Day 1 of "Distance Learning". Our district used two days to help the teachers prep, plus two half days last week. I'm sure they're overwhelmed, but day one seemed to go well. Both kids have to follow a bell schedule, and sign into each class in real time. Some classes the teachers have set up livestreams, while others post assignments to be completed within the "class time". Scheduled break for lunch. It seems to be very well thought out, logistics wise. I'm sure next week will be the real test content wise.

yup, other shops that I frequent reporting the same. in fact inventory is getting low and repair workload is near pre-Fondo level mayhem.

then again i guess in a few months a lot of pre-owned "barely ridden" bikes might be for sale once the winter rolls around....

This is the unknown in the grand scheme. Are these the Fondo/NYC Bike Walk folks and we'll be dead later in the year?

The most sobering COVID19 paper to date.
⠀⠀
Expert epidemiologists and infectious disease specialists from around the globe in conjunction with the World Health Organization published the Imperial College paper with the most thorough epidemiological modeling we have for #COVID19.

Here's the summary:

I had read that this paper is what triggered the administration to wake up last Wednesday. SOLID post.

I'll take them if you really have all 15.

My wife's close work colleague is 'presumptive positive' but appears to be on the upswing. She already worked remotely so there's no chance my wife was exposed. She's presumptive because she can't get a test out in Pittsburgh. Another anecdote, I guess.

My daughter is in 5th grade. So far things have been good. Her school already had a decent on-line presence, primarily through Google classroom, and she's used to taking quizzes and studying with the computer. Her math teacher is particularly good about having supplemental lessons with a voice-over. Yesterday she had a math test, went outside and took some pictures, then created a document for science class,, studied Spanish, did some reading, and worked on a longer term project. I think this first week is mostly coasting though. It's not clear how they're going to teach new material or if that's going to fall to my wife and I.

About a year ago, I let her buy a used iPhone with her saved up money. No service, just WiFi. I was a little conflicted at the time but OMFG it's a life saver. Facetime with her friends really lifts her spirits. They spend a surprising amount of time actually discussing their assignments too.
