Cunningham park in/near NYC?

I've been thinking about stopping on my way home a riding Cunningham. Anyone ride this park? Am I better off getting into nj and riding Lewis Morris or something else?

i haven't been to cunningham in a few years. it's really more of a DJ playground than anything else, so if you're looking for an x/c ride, i'd head to NJ. it is a fun place to ride, but there are lots of good size jumps through the park. a DJ or bmx bike works best there.

Are the jumps on the main trails? I've seen videos and the jumps and pump track seemed to be separate. If there are jumps on the trails are they rollable? I've wanted to check this place out for a while.

yeah there's pretty much a rollable line everywhere so you don't have to stop ever except for a couple spots where there are some very large doubles. but even then there's usually a line to the side since some of the doubles were flooded the times i was there.

the trails that don't have jumps that are there are pretty short.

The single track is actually not bad and if you are into little jumps while riding there are tons of them. Clark they may have gotten better from when you were there last. Do the loop twice and it's like riding 6 Mile Run. Having said that I would not classify it as a destination. The traffic and tolls getting there is usually horrible and the trails are not worth a specific trip from NJ necessarily although checking it out once in a while is not bad. If you are passing by the I would say it's totally worth checking out. Oh don't expect it to seem like you are riding in serene nature. Although you are in the woods you can feel the presence of Queens all around you.

There are 3 jump/pump areas, beginner to advanced. I would not recommend rolling the advanced stuff. The jumps can be seen from the trails but they are separate from the trails.

I work in Brooklyn and queens all the time so I wouldn't pay any extra tolls. Just trying to find something easier to get to as I get out of work at 4:30 but normally can't get to ringwood or jungle until 6:30.

Is there a way to get close to here by train with a bike? In the past we have taken the north east corridor into Penn station with bmx bikes. It looks like its about 14 miles from there. That's not the worst but getting closer would be nice. I'm thinking that bikes aren't allowed on the subway tho. I don't think I would consider going if I had to drive a car there.

I think bikes are allowed in the subway and train during slow times ie not during rush hour.

Maybe I'll save this ride for a day I work in Long Island.

Thanks for the info everyone.

F train to Jamaica will get you within 3 miles. Also LIRR to Hollis stop. Or LIRR to Bayside stop.

Bikes are legal on subways, but they recommend not during rush hours. I would recommend going in the 1st or last cart.

$5 lifetime permits are required for LIRR and they don't allow bikes during rush hours. I don't think they check too strictly though.

Bringing a bungie cord is useful.

Thanks soundz

This is what I was looking for. Do you know if the same rules apply to regular trains? I would most likely take the northeast corridor from jersey. I've taken bikes before and I was told that other than rush hour bikes were allowed but I would like a confirmation from someone who really knows.

NJ Transit rules make my head spin around:

LIRR is part of MTA so the $5 rule applies on non-rush hours.
