Government considers disabling cellphones in cars

So even passengers wont be able to use their phones? This will never happen IMO. If anything, there will be much more strict laws with more enforcing, and heftier fines. And what happens when somebody tries to dial 911 and cant get through?

You can buy cell phone "scramblers" now...

There is simply no way this would pass. Just an example of legislators shooting for the moon in hopes of getting only a slight change in the end.

The current laws make this pretty simple. Stiff fine for using your device when behind the wheel. Laws don't mean squat unless they are going to be enforced. I see motorists on their phones all the time. I'm surprised that enforcement has been so slow.

At this point, I suspect that distracted driving has become a bigger problem than drunk driving ever was.

I see cops on their phones while driving very frequently. The current law is never enforced...

To an extent this is true. I have passed police officer while on the phone but a few days ago it caught up with me. So is the theory, " If you cross the line one too many times you become the victim." The police officer took it as disrespect that I didn't make an attempt to put the phone down for a second or two while I passed him. In a polite way I told him after he issued me the ticket that was not the intention what so ever. The same day I went out and picked up bluetooth.

Strong governmental advertisement like the seat belt campaign in the 80's would be a good way to send the message out. Strong stories of those who lost their loved ones or some otherwise innocent parent doing a long stint in jail for vehicular manslaughter that will miss their children growing up... Stuff like that... They would have to make vehicular manslaughter a crime in ALL states first

Getting a call from the boss while your on the road will get your attention 2 times quick even with a hands free unit...

handsfree, speakerphone, whatever. I don't think it helps. Holding the phone to your ear isnt distracting. The talking is what distracts.

"Distracted driving" is what they call it. Some people are a little more than "distracted."

This moron went straight thru (as in over) the stop sign, right turn arrow, up and down the median and across a lane of traffic to hit me head on. Luckily I was driving my 7200lb truck and not my 15lb road bike.

By the way, anyone know of a good body shop in Central NJ?

IMO talking into the air (ie. using hands free) is equally as distracting as talking to a passenger and we all pretty much do that. I think it's the texting, checking emails and holding it to your head that are more of a distraction in my mind. When you look away from the road, down at the phone or fumble with it in one hand you lose concentration on the road. Kinda like when you look at the tree when riding you can veer towards it, I find when you look away from the road down at the phone you can veer. I see people doing it all of the time... they keep the phone low and they look down and the car veers. It's especially obvious at night because you can see the glow!

I see a lot of crazy shite driving 200 miles a day. The cell phone swerve happens way too often. It's frightening how distracted most drivers are.

I got the ticket a few months ago. I smiles politely as I handed over my STFA card, the cop said "you're friend will tell you the same thing, zero tolerance"

I can find a ton of other things I'd rather spend $130 on🙄

I think talking to a passenger is less distracting. When you speak with a passenger, your mind is still in the car and on the drive and so is theirs. Both are you are somewhat in the loop. When you call someone, you are putting at least part of your mind somewhere else.

At least the passenger can tell you you're about to hit that guy on the bike. I doubt the guy on the other end of the line can do that.

I think it's stupid. Where does it stop. When I was younger, I got into an accident b/c I was changing the radio station and someone stopped short b/c of an animal. Completely my fault, but are we to take radios out of the car? How about thermostats? GPS? Food? Any of the other buttons on the dash? Hot women outside of the car?
