H2H 2011 Proposed Sched and Payout Schedule

It wasn't the alcohol that was the draw as much as real food. I know I've been to events where there is someone set up selling cheap burgers, hot dogs and sodas. I'm thinking that sort of thing might be worth a try to keep people around a bit longer. Then again, it may also conflict with NJ state park regulations.
Unfortunately NJ SP's do not allow vendors to sell food in any parks without permits or local board of health inspections. We once tried to get an ice cream truck for one of our events and we were told NG.

What is with these parks? Not even ice cream could get in?? That's no fun at all 🙁

times

Ill chime in late.
During the end of the series, 2 of the top 3 in 40-44 and 3 of the top 4,45-49 sport discussed the 1pm cat1 start times. All of us agreed that the start time would limit our motivation to attend most of the races. We are pretty psyched to move up, just not crazy about spending the whole day for a couple hour race. No offense to the promoters who are very dedicated and do a great job.
Ill still attend some of the races, but would rather travel to some endurance races next year,(start earlier, ride more and get back the same time).
Curious to know how the rest of the cat2's moving up feel?

Bingo, I'm hoping more endurace-like races pop up but I might throw my hat into some road racing as well. I'll get a better feel after the Wayway race and go from there.

I thanked u I hope u heard me!!

I really wanted to stop reading this because I feel like its pointless to even have this thread, but what the hell;

At the level of pro/cat1, do you come to race to watch people cheer you on?

I've watched a couple of Cat 1/Pro races go off. I'm not sure what the in race discussion sounds like between riders. I watched the Jungle race after going through the feed zone and besides yelling at the people I knew and having a 5 second dialogue with them, I heard Ryan talking to another Bulldog dude and that was it. We would cheer, they wouldn't flinch. Do they care we are here?

This is a pretty generic statement so I don't mean to offend anyone;

No Cat1/Pro rider seems excited I'm watching them. I don't want you to be super excited to see humans yelling at you, but do you even notice anyone is cheering, or are you too focused on the goal ahead to realize what the hell is going on? You guys come through the zone all business and focused on keeping the hammer down, as you should.

I feel like more of a nuisance than a support to be watching. Does that mean I won't stand around and support my peoples? No.

I just got distracted at work from the rest of my post, so I will just leave it at that. I love all of you.

I'm probably going to do the same. Pick some h2h races that suit my riding style and mix in some enduro races. My main concern with the 1:00 start is knowing I'm riding in hottest part of the day, riding an extra lap, and getting my butt kicked. It's going to be brutal, but I'm still psyched to do it.

+1 in doing the same.
As a cat 2 moving up I am not competing in every h2h race.
Even as a cat 2 I did not do every race, with job and family I did the races that fit my schedule. This will be my same approach in cat 1, only after the race I'll be a lot further away from the podium:popcorn:

However, my class went from 27 finishers to 12 from the first to last race. You can break out the priority arguments til the cows come home. But it's not a legit argument and it's not addressing the problem.

The survey is still open!

I couldn't disagree more.... I used to MTB race, then switched to Road, then TT..... I went from Beginner to Sport to Expert and my time got harder and harder to manage with a wife, house (which needed tons of work around it), and the idea of starting a family. Often times I choose to Road Race because I knew after a hard race in the morning I could get home and work on the yard or house while it was still light out.

Now that I have 2 small children (boys in fact) almost 2 yrs, and 4 1/2 yrs... I couldn't imagine getting home to central NJ after racing "Ringwood" or "Waywayanda" until 3 or 3:30 in the afternoon.... just in time for dinner on the weekends.... I much prefer an early starting TT do my ride and be home for lunch and help my wife take care of my kids...

Maybe Boys are different then someone who has Girls but my guys want to ride bikes, hike, play on the playground, and play ball. And I get out on my Bike far less often now then I did before I had kids but it's something I do for them and for me. They are only young once.....

Trust me-- girls want to get out and play too. It's a big juggle. Sometimes very frustrating, but they do grow fast.

I believe Norm is an advocate of the earlier start times.

As a father of 2 boys, now 12 and 15 I can say that it does get easier as they get older to get out to ride. When there young its more difficult to find free time for cycling. My kids are more independent now but as a dad I still have to get them to soccer/baseball/basketball and spend time with there activities.

In a few years when my kids are in college i'll have my cycling heyday😉

I want the cheering. Yeah, I'm there for business, but on my 3rd lap I was disappointed that you guys weren't sitting there in your lawn chairs.

Think of the difference doing a cross race with versus without the cheering section. It's not quite that extreme. But it makes a difference.

Dude try racing Expert when Allaire had the November Race back in the day.... Every lap you would come by less stuff existed in the start finish area.... My last year racing Allaire I was in the lead until about 1/2 mile to got on the last lap and everytime through I felt like they were like finish already Expert Field.... Noboby really cheers the Experts because they Beginners, and Sports are back at their cars waiting for results eating something...

Not a good reference, most people clear out by the time my field goes in cross too. In either discipline I finish with 3 cars in the lot and all the tents already packed up.

Hopefully some changes will at least be attempted. This is all hypothesis at this point with rhetoric from a relatively small group of people. The typical number of racers is still 3x the amount of posts even made here. The only way to know how the racing masses will react is to try. And I'm not suggesting changing race schedules every week, maybe just the last 2 races. I can already envision several people showing up at the wrong times if folks are not reminded several times. I am still a +1 for earlier CAT1, hell make everything an hour earlier (again personal preference - I've been at work for an hour and a half already and yes I am procrastinating).

I preface writing this by realizing that of course big decisions are not based on 1 person however bear with me on this below thought...

When I was riding Sunday I recognized a guy on the Rocket Ride who coincidentally did the Ringwood race and easily won my class that day who did not do any other h2h races all season. I started talking with him and he had said that although he was a cat3 road racer and had also done a few 50 mi mountain bike races this year and finished very well (top 3 in one case) he would like to do more h2h but of course doesn't like the race day time commitment for a race of this distance.

I know this has been rehashed already but my thought is that here is a guy that should be racing this series in an appropriate catagory and is not. He then said he will likely do the series next year but as cat 2 (good luck everyone else)I actually told him with all due respect that he is not a cat2 racer clearly by his performance in the Ringwood race and he responded with "I know but I want to just have some fun doing this next year and don't want to deal with the entire day....blah blah". I thought about this during the day and wondered how this type of thinking could be addressed as it seems to be so common.

If race time is set in stone due to the argument that beginners shouldn't race in the heat of the day (which IMO I am really not sure about as someone mentioned length of race as a major counterpoint).
I realize there are too many groups already but should a consideration be made for a cat2 open group for people who don't plan to do the entire series possibly and/or to attract the type of people who would likely not do any cat1races for a variety of reasons already stated in this thread? (distance, time, start time etc) Maybe even no awards or swag for this group just to keep it simple? H2H may also wind up with less "spoilers" of the individual series by those who show up for just a race or 2 all season.

I realize the future of the sport is in trying to attract new beginner riders but I have this feeling that there are lots of experienced ones out there as well that we need to try and get involved that have slipped away.

Thanks for reading.

Exactly what I'm talking about ..... No back when I was racing stuck around to watch the Experts, and when my team help Tom breakdown at some Cross Races no one sticks around for the late Cross Races either....

It has nothing to do with the "Heat of the Day" it has to do with getting home and having Dinner with your Family...

What changes are you thinking about?

There were only 2 or 3 girls racing in the 40+ last year anyway?

Go back to 35+ rather than 40+ or even just an open Cat 2 women's class. There are arguments against an open class, but that's how it is in cross, the fields are big, and no one is crying if they don't podium.

Had a long discussion with hubby about moving up. I am in the same dilemma as last year. I like racing 2 hours. I don't have time for training for, and frankly not willing, to race for 3 hours. There is such a decrepancy between the average woman vs. man finish time and ability. When women do the same number of laps as men, it is just unmanageable for me. The crickets would be chirping when I finish. And having long laps doesn't help this situation. Isn't it true that USA Cycling has changed for shorter laps for the pros? Shorter laps would make it possible for less laps for women than men and all would finish in the 2-2.5 hour range.

Every venue is different, which makes some sort of statement impossible, but it should be possible to say weeks before the race: the lap is x distance, it would take the average cat 1 male racer to do y min laps and average cat 1 woman racer to do z min laps, and if the target is 2 hour races for the average person, then calculate the number of laps from there.

I also suggested that Cat 1 and Cat 2 women should just compete against each other in one class. There are always Cat 2's that would do well in Cat 1 and Cat 1's that could fit well into Cat 2, so there's overlap anyway. But I know this was late night ridiculous blather.

I have lots to say about my frustration with moving up to Cat 1, what's held me back, etc. But I won't go on.
