Pearl's Generic Talk

Pearl, you don't have anything to worry about. When I moved up from cat3 earlier this year, it was actually a relief. I put much more pressure on myself to do well in cat3, in cat2, atleast for this season, its more along the lines of do what I can, and see how I end up. This has really become true lately, because since starting my new job 3 weeks ago, the only time I have been on my bike is at the DH40 and 909. Coming through the start finish I often find myself thinking, "oh hell, another lap of this?" but once you dive back into the course its back to business. Whenever I find myself really struggling, I just try to remind myself that I'm out to have fun. As far as gears vs. SS, race what your comfortable with, with the courses remaining though, I would say gear on the side of caution. I always prefer to stay on the bike when possible.

Norm, thanks for posting up my least favorite score sheet of the season. It is a top ten though right? 😛 And Pearl, you won't be chasing me, the top 3-4 riders in 19-29 are filthy fast. My 4th at the Bulldog Romp was over 10 minutes behind 3rd place 😱

I'm 24 btw.

It's good to read that, Chris...I will prob. move to cat 2 myself next season and I have mixed feelings about it.

SS or 19-29
I don't know what class I'd race. Dustin said that Blue was in two weeks. Apparently he is on a Maya calendar system. I hope I can improve in those weeks to be a tad stronger.

I heard the SS guys are faster so maybe I will hide from them for now. Then I can play tricks and pretend I'm in the SS class on them :getsome:

Reading what Chris wrote makes a lot of sense. I went into LM hoping I would kill it and be called a sandbagger. With Cat 2 I won't have any pressure to do good; Just to finish. Have fun instead of having pressure to be bad ass in Cat 3. I can now hide under the radar in 2 and no one will give a shit. Sweet.

G'town Hill repeats
This is the first time I have attempted anything like this. I decided to ride from my place to Old Griggstown road, as it would be a nice leg stretcher and warm up. I ended up popping out of ridge road and seeing that my normal route I was planning on taking has a nice big fat DETOUR sign on it. This pushes me on Route 1 and towards Forrestal Village. I end up passing about 100 cars sitting on this detour.

I start right onto Old Griggs and feel like I bit off more than I can chew. It went (It felt) straight up for the first 50 feet. Is this what I am in for? Thankfully it flattened out a bit before the last 1/4 mile or so that was a higher grade. My goal for this (sight unseen) was to do this seated, the whole way. I was in my middle ring and the maxed out in the back. I gave up the last 50 feet the first time. Phew. That wasn't too bad. I got my HR up and it felt good.

It kind of reminded me of racing; It sucked the whole time I was going up this hill and hated every second of it, but once I got to the top I was siked to hit this again.

The second time I had the same result. I ended up passing some guy climbing as I was sitting down (who knows his skill level), so this was a ego booster. I felt unstoppable.

The third time I ended up crossing my chain over the first hump. I felt that the third time wasn't the charm. I got it back together and gave the last hill a good attack. I ended up standing later than the first two and I felt stronger at the top.

Three was enough. I cooked on the canal to Mandi's work. It felt good I had "something" left in the tank.

Not sure if I did the "traditional" hill repeats. It seems that people just go at it and turn themselves inside out. I guess I modified it to fit my needs. 31 miles, 17.1 average. 1:45 minutes. I didn't track this on my jewel covered iPhone.

PowerBar and eating after/during.
This was the first time I had my almighty super PowerBar during a ride. I agree that it is a little messy. I felt like I had doo doo on my hands. I actually laughed out loud because it was pretty funny. Dustin would have laughed. After reading Norm's review about the PowerBar of Love, All I really read was:

waa waa waa, waa waa, waa. I'd buy it again.

I win. It was good. You admitted it. Just because it looks like you shit your pants and wiped it with your hands isn't my fault. This isn't a fashion show. It was delicious.

It wasn't delicious. It was good. And for $1.50 it better be at least good.

Pudding is better.

The power bars are way too dry. The pb&j mojo Cliff bars blow them away. Not even close. Thanks for the tip Norm...

I'll have to try the caramel one next.

The Mojo there is good, I found those maybe 6 months ago and it was a great addition to the lineup. The Mojo Dipped (which Jeremy, Jim, Jay, and Joe - I'll refer to myself as Joe to keep the J thing going - all love) is yet another different style of Clif bar. This one is the shiz-nit.

Since your name is Joe and Pearl's is James, you guys should be good. This bar was obviously designed for people whose names begin with J.

Cut it out...Baby James just called me crying cause you are scaring him. I did blue with a 20t last year cat3 and almost died. Pay no attention to my 13th place finish cause it was mostly in part to a missing a turn and racing a guy 1/2mile the wrong way (would have been 5th or so). This year 32x19...F it

Im not trying to scare him....im just saying that if you choose to race a single speed at blue you are out of your goddammed mind! 🙂 Unless you're woody.

No really Pearl. You will live. Worst thing that will happen to you is that you will get to a big hill and have to walk it. But this is why I say to make you go for a pre-ride there if you have not ridden there yet....have you ridden there yet?

I buy cases of the mojo bars at sams now that come with the peanut butter pretzel, mountain mix, and the dipped chocolate peanut. All are AWESOME. The non dipped ones are perfect for carrying on the bike since they dont melt. I also love these ones since I cant eat regular cliff bars. I tried them this year and I have figured out that I have a bit of an intolerence to that amount of soy. 1 cliff bar and im blasting off like the saturn 5 rocket! But they dont sell the pb&j versions at sams, so ill have to look around for them.

Drugstore.com - buy enough stuff and get free shipping. I get all sorts of energy bars that way. And for those of us who have a Healthcare FSA, you can actually use your pre-tax dollars to buy them. Bonus!

As for Blue Mountain, if I had to list my 5 most miserable races ever, Blue would be there. In fact, it would be in my top 2. I'm pretty sure it would be #1 in that list but I would need to think about it some more. That race, as a sport racer, took me longer than the marathon Wawayanda course did this year. It was one of the most miserable times I've ever had at a race.

So Pearl should be fine.

Yup....blue 08 and blue 09 were right on top of my list of worst races ever. No worries pearl, you bring the single speed pearl, mandi and I will blow the horns. 🙂

I've been eating these. They taste awesome and cost 22 cents each. Same amount of fiber as the Mojo bars. Is there any reason to spend $1+ on a bar?

Fiber isn't really a desired element in these.

The cost usually comes down to taste, consistency, and calories, and to a lesser extent what's in them. Those bars you pictured are not real good for longer bike rides. At 100 calories a pop a ride like yesterday would require me to bring 7-8 to keep me going, which is a bit of a pain.

I dont think the amount of fiber is much of a concern as far as exercise nutrition goes. In all likelyhood people are looking at calories, protein, and the amount and QUALITY of the sugars provided. Safe to say those shoprite bars are made using the cheapest of ingredients. The type/quality of the sugars relates to how its metabolized.

I know about the fiber. I do listen when others make suggestions 😀 You once mentioned to stay away from fiber on the bike. I brought it up because my first though was that a granola bar would be loaded with fiber. I'll deal w/ carrying extra because I'm cheap and these things are surprisingly good. They are a little more "crumbly" than a Clif bar. I found that out while trying to eat one while my heart rate was pinned. I inhaled a crumb and coughed out 1/2 my bar. The Stop N Shop brand is the exact same bar for anyone interested.
