USA made me proud. Looking ahead my money is on Germany and the Netherlands...as well as my heritage. 😉

that would be Donovan for me...

cheer up....this should help, stop watching ESPN and turn to Canal 41 for the pre/after match reports 😉

I don't think it's fair to compare surgically enhanced TV personalities with random people in the crowd.

Either way though, I still think Portugal wins.

Fair point, but I don't think those Portugal girls are of legal age anyways.
This one on the left looks annoying as hell. Ah forget it they're all trouble in one form or another.

Good god, man. Please keep this thread going...although I won't watch a match until the FINAL.... Now that US and MEX are out, I don't care. Quite frankly, I'm tired of watching games with such terrible officiating. England and Mexico both got screwed on a goal. I have to imagine that these things can seriously deflate a team.

Thank you Jimmy, or Walter Mitty, or the Scarlet Pimpernell; or whatever you true name is. Those pictures lifted my spirits.

Having said that... By the time the final whistle went in England's game I just wanted it to be over. This generation of "gifted" and "world-class" English players have never lived up to the hype that surrounded them. As a supporter of England one gets accustomed to going out of major tournaments fighting hard but being defeated by injustice and bad luck. At least that's how it used to be: Italia 90, Euro 96, France 98. Since 2002 we've limped out of every World Cup and European Championship with a wimper not a bang.

As for this match with Germany: Sure, if the ghost-goal scored by Lampard and "missed" by the Uruguayan linesman had stood it might have been a different game. At 2-2 the English wouldn't have been chasing the game, wouldnt' have been pushing as far up the pitch. But the better team won and no amount of nationalistic Kool Aid can convince me otherwise.

Holy frioles. At least 2 out of the 3 pics are good, or is that 5 out of the 6 or is that 10 out of the 12...

Someone go to Zoller's house to make sure he's still with us. 🙄....

Ha, it actually cheered me up.

Oh well, I guess I can blow off all the candles I had for San 'Temo and Santo Niño Chicharito

I knew this was going to happen. I know Argentina is a better team and Mexico didn't have the "tools" to beat them. I was hoping for a close game and in the back of my mind I had that one ounce of hope that maybe, just maybe, for a change we would play our best game ever and advance....but to what? You can't have two miracles in one World Cup, or can you ?

As I am a sucker for pain, I watched the game again last night 😱. I wouldn't blame it on the ref, although he really blew the call on the first goal. 2nd goal was a gift, I wouldn't trash Osorio, as he normally is a very strong defense man. The 3rd goal was just a work of art from my boy Tevez, which I will not stop praising, he is just up there next to Messi. Messi continues scoreless, but despite not scoring he is playing good futbol and always a threat, so he is causing damage as it is, having defense players scrambling and leaving other men with no coverage.
It was a nice game, Mexico had its chances, it had more shots on goal and more corner kicks, but they lacked Goals, which I mentioned this has been a weakness since a few years back. In reality that is where Mexico's team belongs top 20 - top 16. It still lacks that special something to break into the top 8 of the world.

And then there is Chicharito with a great goal, just so Mexico didnt go empty, proving once again why he should've been a starter in all games.
I heard because of his performance this cup he was going to get awarded with a new car 🙄 Chicharito (small pea) 🙄

I can write all day long this but I wont bore you, I can rant all day about the Mexican Futbol Federation which is the main problem, but gotta do some work here.

As far as Germany - England, great game too. Another really blown call on the 2nd goal for England. This was really a game changing as England just went all ballz out and got beaten twice again with two powerful German counter attacks. All teams should learn from Germany (especially Mexico) that is exactly how you perform a counter attack...fast, precise, deadly.

I still have my doubts about instant replay, it has been discussed many times, but I believe FIFA thinks it takes away from the "purity" of the game and the "human factor". Perhaps it can be done only on goal reviews, I don't know?? that is a whole other debate for another thread...oh wait, we are in a MTB forum...

Now that I think more about it...it should've been a tie

Maybe Mexico had better chances at beating THIS Argentinian team instead

Damn it, almost time for the game....work can wait!

Forgot to mention the Ghost Goal, many people saying it was payback from the 1966 cup...Karma? I feel really bad for you man, that sucked ass.
If only the other shot from Lampard would've gone in.....but I know there are not If's or But's in futbol.

Al, what do you think about English football, is it the same I have been reading in Italy, where teams are so competitive in the local league they are seeking talent (superstars) from abroad, therefore not growing "local" players. Italian press was all over it. One could argue it is the same in Spain, where their league is so plagued with foreigners and their national team was always coming up short despite being "a favorite in paper" in previous tournaments. Not until last Euro 2008 did they finally accomplished the ultimate goal.

I argue the same for the Mexican league, where they bring 2nd and 3rd tier south Americans (all the better ones go to Europe😉) to take place of Mexican players. They allow 5 foreigners in the team! On top of that, they pay the Mexican players waaaay too much money luring them into the local league instead of them going to Europe or South America where they will earn less $$$, but will grow as players learning from the best and being exposed to top level futbol.

I dont follow EPL with too much detail 😱 but I think a lot of this generation you mention will not be going to the next world cup, is there a new generation coming up? or you feel this void I was talking about.

Thanks for the pics, its a nice break in the day.

I hear this argument about purity from many different places, and just curious.

I really don't get what purity is disturbed with instant replay. Other sports are no longer "pure"? Can someone define purity for me in today's futbol? The calls that continue to be blown are a complete disgrace. That is what disturbs the purity imho.

I dont know...that is why I said it is a whole other discussion. There are two sides arguing strongly about it.
You have valid points. I agree with you but maybe my Mexican stubbornness sometimes makes me think in favor of not having instant replay....maybe because sometimes we had calls that worked in our favor 😛

This world cup has been plagued by ref's mistakes, so it is definitely going to make this a hot topic and one that hopefully FIFA will re-examine. Perhaps it could only be used in GOALS that are questionable, but not for any other plays.

I'd like to see replay on goal attempts only. C'mon...bring some rationalism to the sport! The "human" dimension of civiliation/mankind failed a long time, circa 1800 if I am not mistaken.

Keep the pics coming--my favorite part of soccer!

Haven't watched the games from today. Will do it later.

So far all the logical favorites have won. The only one with no really strong favorite was USA/Ghana 😕

Uruguay, Argentina, Germany, Holland, Brazil....

could Japan surprise Paraguay? I doubt it, and I hope not so we keep seeing more of Larissa "Jagger" 😉

I guess "in paper" Spain is favorite over Portugal, but we should see tomorrow

So far I like these two Qt final matches a lot......for their futbol of course, but also for their fans 😎

Damn! Brazil just cruised all over Chile, it is like they weren't even breaking a sweat. Chile was running all over the place, trying everything and Brazil at "half speed" was containing the Chilean attacks. In a way Chile reminded me of Mexico. No matter how hard they try there is still a big gap between the big powerhouses (Brazil, Argentina) and the rest of the teams in the Americas.

Holland advanced somewhat easily over Slovakia, playing what maybe not a "flashy" exciting football, but very practical and getting things done. I know I pick them to win it all, but now I am having my doubts, however, Robben is back and you saw what he can do (first goal). He is definitely a player that can make a difference.

Today is all about VIVA LA ESPAñA!!!

But wait, maybe the Portuguese trio will make another appearance? In the meantime...
