Plumbers: Cost to install a new water heater?

I have a 75G Bradford White water heater that had to be replaced. I was floored at how much it cost vs when I last did this 8 years ago. The unit itself, from online searches, costs between $1500 to $2000. For those of you that are plumbing contractors, roughly how much should the total job run (removal, install, one flight down to basement, easy access to the space)?

Gas or electric?
I would say DIY, YouTube it!

water heater is not hard, (kinda critical to comfort, but not difficult), its only two water lines and a gas line,

I won’t advocate for doing something you’re not comfortable with, but it’s a pretty simple job. The hardest part is usually getting the old heater out of the house.

I don’r know the cost, but in the past I’ve used Ideal HVAC in morris plains. I remember them being reasonable and very professional.

I had a plumber install my 50gal Bradford electric for $1800. Took less than 2 hours total. Retail for unit is around $600. One man job so $600/hr.
Thanks for responses so far. For those that are plumbers does that hourly rate sound right? My issue is that when I had this same job done 8 years ago it was $1600 (unit plus labor) Now it’s double 😳. Company owner says materials have gone up 10-20pct /year since then but I know the unit itself is max $2000, so for the two hour job that suggests about $ 600/hour. Does that sound right? Seems nuts to me but I know the world is a different place now. The company I use has always been professional and responsive, I’m just in sticker shock.

Is it direct vent? I have this one and it doubled from 8 years ago.Screenshot_20231007-142116.png The flue vent version is about 1600. As for installation, it varies. Shop around, much cheaper if not an emergency. Also you don't need a permit to start the job. Just get one after done if pressed for time.

600 an hour? That is sick.

Permit required and if don't you will pay at the sale of your house.
Hot water heater
Remove and install
Permit which requires inspection
$2500-3500

Pretty simple diy for $1k or less
You maybe able to find a inspection sticker on ebay but you didn't hear it from me 🤣

Get a few quotes. Prices can be all over the place. That seems like a really expensive price for the unit itself. Oh, and mine was installed less than a year ago.

Flue vent. Yep I was seeing $1500 to $2000. So even if I take the high end figure that means the labor is over &1000. Nuts.

Nonsensical. Why would cash buyers be any less diligent about past non-permitted work?
Lots of as-is homes are cash only. Also many just want to close as soon as possible so the sellers can't get a better offer. Lost two homes that way, they gladly paid me back for all fees and inspection after getting 100k more. It's a freaking jungle out there
