Ask an automobile mechanic.

7k rpm neutral drops might be the problem.
check for melted rubber in the wheel wells.

bad knock sensor? bad crank sensor? partially clogged injector?
why isn't the computer telling them what is wrong?

new bike.
:D
I have absolutely no idea.

September. Sunday while on line at the drive thru at Starbs it started smoking and knocking. I drove there, parked my car and drove it about 2 miles right to the spot that does all of our work. Originally diagnosed as bad alternator/belt, as the spinning side was almost falling off and belt was dry rotted. After new alternator install, they start the car and engine

Replaced the alternator for smoking out the tailpipe? Or was the smoke from the engine compartment?

The Internets say that timing chain tensioners are an occasional failure point on Honda K24s: https://tuningpro.co/the-3-most-common-honda-k24-engine-problems/

Walter ,did your daughter happen to get gas in the car while she was out running errands?? .....could be she got a bad load of gas ?? ...alternator was just a separate issue from that

Im not really sure. The mechanics said after they started it with the new alternator it sounded like something was rattling in the engine. Hoping today they can get me a proper diagnosis.

Well I got this today ... A-class with an M260 motor which is a Renault motor made by Nissan with 2600 miles, runs rough and smokes... Found injector number 1 staying energized and combustion misfire codes on cyl 1, ran a compression test and cyl 1 has 90psi when the other cylinders are at 172psi, performed cylinder leak down test and found cylinder 1 leaks 90%, removed the head to investigate and well...IMG_20210528_154753119.jpgIMG_20210528_155106726.jpgIMG_20210528_154806183.jpg

2600 miles! So many questions.

Is the cat likely to be hosed as well? When an injector stuck on my friend's old Carrera GT, it took a cat with it. Cylinder walls scored from the wash down? Tons of fuel in the oil? Is the different coloration (running hotter?) of the #3 exhaust valves unusual?

The fuel economy must have been atrocious.

The catalytic converter can be ruined if you actually try to push the car beyond 3k RPM... It all comes down to how much you are ignoring the problem and how much load you putting on your cat(how much you pushing the engine). In this case the client brought the vehicle back to us as soon the problem started. I am against the Mercedes with 4 cylinder engines because they are from Renault and built by Nissan, all regulations for Formula 3 I think, if you want to compete you must sell cars with certain engine specs. Now if it's an AMG, the blueprint is from Renault but fully built by AMG with their own modifications... That's why the CLA45 AMG is pushing over 350hp for a street engine.

@GTCHAMPION1 so whats the full extent of the damage? Just the cracked valve? or piston/rings/turbo suffer any damage also?

Complete head(ordered a loaded head) valve seats are bad, also I cannot use the old valve cover on the new head because because it will not fit perfect, other valves show signs of stress, so a new head with everything it is. Everything else is OK. I hate this M260 Renault engines. The engines even take a special oil(229.52), so pretty much you are stuck getting your oil changed at the dealer or at a Mercedes specialist who is familiar with all the new cars

The discussion over in @Patrick's "I finally bought a sports car" thread has me thinking.

How would you go about finding a reputable mechanic out of state? My son now has his Land Rover at school with him in Pittsburgh. He knows nothing about cars. I figure at some point he'll need to bring this someplace for repairs, hopefully not on a flatbed. Would be good to have an idea where to go before the problem happens.

I would ask his favorite bartender or liquor store owner. I'm sure they interact multiple times a week and could have some input.

Is there a local FB page for which town he lives in other than the general of "Pittsburgh? Seems like every small town/county/region has one.

Angies List or Thumbtack could be a good option, but subject to internet reviews.

perhaps the school has a club where members could help him sort things and ID student friendly help?
We had an SCCA club, and could use their lifts/tools for some small $$/hr. Always someone milling around
interested in helping too.

i thought you had to pass a test of basic mechanical aptitude to own a land rover out of warranty? did they do away with that?

Would suggest to start with the college professors or staff at the college ? Assumes they are local but they may know someone who knows someone kinda thing.

Have him go out to dinner or lunch at one of the local places (not food chain) and ask service staff. They see and talk to a lot of people and also might be local enough to know someone.

Online reviews to me are less and less reliable these days due to paid /fake postings.

My wife bought this back in 07. It's the only car I've ever said we should have the extended warranty. We never got to collect a penny. Not sure what's up with it, but it never needs anything besides batteries and brakes. It just passed 100k miles and other than a fuel pump early on (under warranty) it just goes. Paint is faded, every piece of interior trim is cracked and it gets shit mileage. Seemed like the perfect car to hand off to him when he turned 17.

I just don't want him getting screwed when something happens and he's clueless and 300 miles away.
