Wildlife

That happened so fast. It had to be a cat. They are so elusive, I doubt we'll ever see that again. I do believe they are out there now. Going to mooch tomorrw and I'll be keeping an eye out for whatever!!

About 10 years ago while hunting deer in a huge corn field in Andover i had a Mountain Lion come out maybe 100 yards away but quickly went back in the woods , about 10 minutes later after scratching my head as to what I saw it came around on the other side of tree stand and only 50 yards away and directly in front. my shotgun has a scope and when I put it on it i whistled and it looked directly at me and completely filled the scope with his face so there was no mistaking what it was. After a few seconds he just went on his way and was never seen again on that property. Shortly after i remember reading somewhere that there were numerous sightings of a mating pair in the hope, Blaistown area and recently there were pics in the star ledger of a Bobcat int the area of Old Mine Road near walpack so I think its safe to say the Cats are hear.

Coming back down at Sourlands yesterday morning I ran into a couple who swore they saw a black bear just off the trail ... Didn't see him, and dubious that they did, but made me wonder if anyone's seen a bear there recently?

love this thread

i saw a coyote on the randolph trails early one sunday morning a couple of years ago. very cool. i have seen small, med and large bears in KVSP and Mahlon. red tail hawks in KVSP and LM. big owl of some kind in KVSP - when they fly away they are silent and you just kind of hear a woosh. rattlesnake on side of road up at stokes up near top of sunrise mountain three years ago. rattlesnake on side of trail in KVSP 3 years ago. big racoon a couple of falls ago goinig up orange to deer park; gave that guy a wide berth since it was daylight and he was big. lots of big black snakes in KVSP, especiallly this time of year. saw 5-6 footer last week at bottom of red going up to the tower. Saw one last year around this time right across the red trail up at the top. maybe the same one. the idea of bobcats and mountain lions being out there is intriguinig and frightening at the same time. we have daily beagle sightings in our neck of the woods as well.

nice thing about riding in woods is you usually see live critters; road riding you usually see squashed critters and lots of jackasses.

There was a bear wandering around down town Princeton last week. Not far from there so I wouldn't be surprised.

other wild life

we had a rare sighting in the back yard this past weekend of some sort of "wild life." we fed him some ice cream and he didn't hurt us

This past Sunday morning I was climbing up Rockaway Road in Tewksbury. Off to my right, a rather large black bear comes barreling down the embankment and on to the road about 20 feet in front of me. I stop. He/she/it stops. We stare at each other for a second before I let out a very low-volume "whoa", and the bear takes off back up into the woods.

I was more surprised than anything else as you really don't come across bears too often when road riding, particularly that far south. Oh yeah, and I almost hit a deer coming down Hollow Brook Rd. on that same ride. That scared the shit out of me.

Saw my first bear(s) out on the trail yesterday at Mahlon. While I was keeping track of where the first one went, another one popped out the same spot, saw me and took off, the other way fortunately. Damn thing is like a furry boulder running!
Didn't post here 'till I had something decent to put on the board.

We kept seeing these little orange salamanders at Allamuchy, and the tiny frog migration at LM, no snakes so far though, biking anyway. Many deer, kamikaze squirrels, couple fox, and I got huge 'tude from some geese with chicks last night! There's a Pilated woodpecker we see/hear almost every weekend at Allamuchy.
The seals and such you peeps are finding while kayaking are awesome to see.

I'll see your bobcat..

Infact I've seen two in the last 10yrs, both on Newark watershed property. ...And I'll raise you guys(and girls) a porcupine in the parking lot for waywayanda/terrace pond on Clinton road AND a mink on the gravel(lower road) that goes through the Ken Lockwood gorge. Also river otters in the northern Delaware while kayaking. Really is amazing how much wildlife can be seen in NJ, imagine what is was like before all the development. IMHO, Only a matter of time before the we start seeing sharks on bikes though...I hear they"re already coming up the rivers....damn jeremy wade and his river monsters, we're never going to be safe again!

Sorry no photo, but saw a very large fat snake at 6M today. Dark charcoal grey with very thin white lines going across the whole body. Head was shaped sorta triangular. Head color was a little brownish rather than charcoal grey like the rest of the body. Some boys I saw later told me it was a water moccasin by my description. I did some image searches online and found nothing that looks like it.

any ideas?

Did it look like this guy at all? If so then you happened across a Garter Snake. You get a lot of individual variation, so sometimes they are darker. Those stripes can also be more solid as opposed to the checkered look here.

nothing like that

Ok. Misread the description and took a stab in the dark. Last attempt then, what about this one? Haven't seen one in person, but i would guess you get a bit of variation from black to gray.

This is very close!!! The fellow we saw had a brownish colored head with no markings and was more triangular shaped, and the white stripes were thinner. A variation???

It's possible. There can be a lot of variation in markings between individuals, and at least a few species of king snakes pale a bit as they get larger. Picture looks like a fairly young one. Body shape stays the same though throughout the group, so not sure about the head.

she is late for migration season..at CR 507 on my way back home today from BM.

Finally found a few snake sites that showed some other color variations of water snakes and it seems there is a species of water snake that does flatten his head when feeling threatened giving it a more triangular shape.

May be this

What is THIS?

A track (set of them) that ran right through the middle of our campsite when we arrived this Friday evening. Took the boys tent camping at Lake Nockamixon and we stayed at the Tohickon Family Campground. These tracks were all over the site when we arrived. BIG claw marks to go with it. Looks a lot like a mtn lion to me. This is across the lake from where the mtn biking apparently is. Judging from the lot there (saw some nice bikes coming and going) and the little hiking we did, I am going to have to go back to ride sometime very very soon...1.5 hours from my place. Lots to do around there, btw, very nice area, lake is huge, ppl running 30ft sailboats on it....we had a blast. If you like the outdoors and wildlife, there is a ton to go around there and it's nice an close. good paintball place nearby too. Easiest fishing ever...caught dozens...
