Wawayanda State Park Conditions

I went to Wawa today with the thought "If its too muddy or snowy, I'll stow the bike and just go for a hike or a trail-run". Turned out it was pretty cold so things were a little crunchy. There is very little snow left. The trails were actually in pretty good shape. Lots of leaf cover seems to have helped the trails shed water and avoid getting real muddy. I avoided a couple that are usually wet trails like Double Pond and Pickle.

Warning: The rock crossing over the creak on Pumphouse is completely washed over. There is at least 6" of water about the rock line. I wasn't confident enough in my balance to go for the 30' crossing. I didn't feel like taking a swim when it was 30 degrees out. So, I took my bike for a hike on Boulder Garden to get around. Perhaps in a day or so, it will subside.

Rode there today. Trails are in excellent condition. What I rode is...

From cul-de-sac on Cherry Ridge: Wall, Cherry Ridge, Mojo Swamp, pop out to cross Old Coal and take unmapped trail over to Lake Lookout, Pickle, Rattlesnake, Tombstone, Turkey Ridge, Cabin, Pump House, South End (where I saw 4 bears), Timber, Cherry Ridge, White Dot, Mojo Swamp, Cherry Ridge.

Here's my 'not so great photo' of mama bear - from afar on South-End Trail. She was hefty. 3 cubs scurried off.

thanks for the update. i made the trip up there yesterday and conditions were great. love waway!!!

Rode at Wawa on 1/9. There was 1-2" of fresh snow from that morning. I kept thinking "Man I wish my Boris was here. This would be perfect for a fat-bike". But, then I managed to convince myself that since I don't have the fat-bike yet, these conditions were perfect for my non-fat-bike and its 2.4" tires. Enjoy!

Took the snowshoes and went to Waway today. I parked at the Cherry Ridge cul de sac, which you are only getting to with 4WD. There is at least 6" of snow on the ground and limited evidence of trail use so far.

There were some truck tire tracks on the dirt roads. Some quad tracks on Old Coal and Turkey Ridge, south of the pipeline. By Cherry Lake on Mojo Swamp, I did pass a couple resting from XC skiing. I also past 1 hiker and 2 others snowshoeing on Cherry Ridge as I was exiting.

So, its starting to get some action. Still lots of trails with virgin snow.

I was thinking about heading over to that side today. Ended up doing the Livingston section up blue to the original Pinwheels Vista then the new Pinwheels vista, took the AT home. On average 6" or so, saw not a soul during the whole trip, about 5.5 miles.
If we get a good dumping I may head up to Terrace Pond on Tuesday.

More snow fell in Waway. My tracks from the other day were almost covered. I did some more snowshoeing on Wall, Rockadendron and Porcupine. There are some XC ski tracks in some places. The untouched trails have a solid 8-10" of powder on them.
Its going to need some help. I may keep my snowshoeing aimed at this park to help tamp-down some more trails. Fatty is on the move from BD finally. So, hopefully, I will get to enjoy the fruits of this labor sometime soon.

Wawayanda 2/06

I gave wawa a try today. It's either my inexperience or the snow conditions, but I didn't have much luck riding. I started on the snowmobile tred tracks and it was OK on level or downhill, I was able to ride about 500 feet, but I kept washing out and loosing rear traction. Once stopped, it was hard to get going again, spinning the rear 3.8 Knard, stock on a Farley. I put a 4.8 Bud on the front and even that was easily washing out. Front pressure is at 6psi. Rear was at 6 and I lowered the rear to about 2psi which helped, but still spun on starting. Once off the tred track and into fresh snow, I was done for. Even pushing the bike was difficult in fresh snow it was sinking about 6 inches. Just putting this out there as my experience, maybe better riders can get a better ride.

Wawayanda....Great riding today 2/10

I hit some of the trails today and they were perfect! About 1 inch of snow on hard packed base. I did 4 miles on the Furnace road, Laurel Pond Trail, Wingdam Trail, and Double Pond Trail to the boat launch. All these trails were great riding. I also had problems on the section of Double Pond Trail that hadn't seen and snowmobile traffic, it only had X skiers and I couldn't stay in their tracks. Every time I wandered off I sank in about 10 inches of snow. All in all a great ride for me, but I'm a newbie and only been riding for 7 months. Here are some photos.

Biked early last week Sitting Bear to Laurel Pond out to Cherry Ridge, came up Clinton back to park on Warwick Tpk. Iron Mtn is good too. All on fattie.

Skied Porcupine, Rockadendren and Wall yesterday. Snowshoes broke the Wall lollipop.

This update inspired me to go check out the north end. Rode from park office up Hoeferlin to Old Wawayanda Rd to Cross to Iron Mountain down to Lake. Across to Furnace, up Furnace Rd, Park Rd, Old Wawa, back.

For the most part these trails were all ridden by snowmobiles with a couple inches on top of that. For the most part, there were some XC ski tracks and my fatbike. Closer to the Lake/Furnace, there was foot traffic.

All in all, it was pretty stellar conditions.

Picked up a second hand Framed, couldn't see the sense behind spending a ton of scratch to find out I really don't like it. Now I'm glad I went the cheaper way, I can honestly say Im pretty sure I don't like them. I'll give it another couple of chances this weekend just to be sure though.
