Damn, still no more pictures. that is alot of typing....

i'm with pearl. i see some monthly goals but what's on the horizon for the summer? anything? while you're at it, what is the meaning of life?

Done, and i'll answer your second question a bit later.

Always wanted to do those CRCA road events down the street too. Ever hear me brag about how awesome riding at Roth Rock?

go ahead. in detail.

Great stuff, and good luck! We have a mutual friend on the fb, how do you know Rita? Do you ever ride with her? I know she does the Fondo and some of the local centuries.

TY! I'm feeling motivated!
Ride with Rita a couple times a year. We did this again in 2014 - can't find the race report. She is usually the most fit person on any ride. Was taking her spin classes a few years back, and we added some post-class road looping round valley.

^you've just described my wiener.

Tell your son no one likes a buzz kill...everything in moderation.

Glad to see your doing HOH, tell Norm not to be a sissy and sign up too.

you are going to go blind if you don't leave that thing alone.
Like everyone else, i told him to state his case, then move on.
Norm sera probablement au Canada ces jours.

This makes me want to start my own (not saying that you are) fat guy (because I am) training thread. Maybe the site needs some of those for the average guy (like myself) who needs some motivation.

Just Do It! #23

I had to explain to my kid why LeBron wears #23.

Goes from one event to like 20 :hmmm:

didn't include the charity 5k/10k runs either.

been doing 1 crit, 1 cx, philly, skylands, mountain man, and a charity ride the last 3 years.

if i were to pick 1 thing added to that list it would be an endurance mtb race.

Yeah, thats a crazy line up of races...crits, marathons, mtb endurance, triathlon, cx... Although this makes as much sense as the biyf contest i guess.

Pat don't kill yourself this year. Cut that list in half, next week cut it in half again.

go ahead. in detail.

Oh man, How I love this area.

I haven't done this race, but have only heard good things about it. It being more fun than the longer versions:

The 36-mile Rothrock TrailMix course provides a combination of some of the best trails within Central Pennsylvania's Rothrock State Forest. The Nittany Mountain Biking Association (NMBA) has been hard at work over the last few years rerouting many old legacy trails to more sustainable trails that are even more enjoyable to ride!. NMBA’s hard work has turned Rothrock State Forest into a mountain biking destination.

The TrailMix has it all – ridge tops, technical trails, awesome descents, grueling fire road climbs, and some new machine built trails that are smooth, flowy, and fast. This 36-mile ride is nothing short of Epic. It will challenge even the most seasoned mountain biker. Expected ride times for a pro-rider would be 3 hours, and up to 6 hours for the experienced recreational rider.

Happy Valley Biking promotes the Rothrock TrailMix race annually - the second Saturday in June - and proceeds are donated to the Nittany Mountain Biking Association (NMBA). More information can be found at www.happyvalleybiking.com.
Need To Know
The ride begins at the Galbrith gap parking lot, just passed the Tussey Mountain Ski Resort. There is ample parking available. Spring Creek runs just below the parking lot and is a great place to cool off after the ride.
Description
Begin at the south end of the Galbraith Gap parking lot and ride up Black Gum trail. Now turn right and cross the bridge and turn left on to Galbrith Gap Trail. When you pop out onto the road look ahead and to your left and you'll see Lonberger trail. Give it a climb up the beautiful rock armored section. When you get to the top take a right onto three bridges trail. Here you'll have three bridges and a beast of a rock garden to start off your Epic ride. If you were able to climb the rock armored trail and clear the three bridges and rock garden you are in good shape for what to expect along the rest of the ride.
If you needed water for your pack the spring after the three bridges and before the rock garden is a great place to fill up to start your ride.
After You cleared the rock garden continue your climb up Laurel run road. Turn right onto Bald Knob Ridge Trail for a short distance, and then turn left onto Greenshoot Trail.

Initially you'll encounter rocks, rocks, and rocks, but the trail will smooth out as you climb. At the top of Greenshoot Trail, you'll make a left to rejoin Bald Knob trail – a rocky ridge trail with many tombstone style rocks. Your hard work will be rewarded as you begin your descent down Maguire Trail.

Turn left onto Lower Trail - the heart of Shingletown – and weave along Roaring Run stream. If you visit in the spring, the mountain laurel will take your breath away. Turn right onto Laurel Run Road and then take a left on the dirt road that lead to Little Flat Tower.

New Laurel Run Trail, an exhilarating technical descent, will be on your right. Turn left onto Laurel Run Road, descending for a mile, then take a left and head up, up, up Bear Gap Road where you can stop for water and enjoy the view! A half-mile past Gettis Ridge Road you'll see Croyle Run trail. Croyle will be on the left and is a very fast and technical one mile descent. Croyle will leave your arms screaming even with a full suspension 29er.

At the bottom of Croyle you'll take a left on Beidleheimer Road. In a half mile, you’re going back up, turning left on Gettis Ridge Road. Do not stop at Wampler Road, but continue to climb Gettis Ridge Road to North Bear Meadows Road. Time to give the legs a break. Down you go, stopping at another magnificent view on the way down if you wish.

Two miles later, you’ll be turning right onto Bear Meadows Road for a few hundred feet, setting up your entrance to Tussey Mountain trail, an awesome, most spectacular ridge top trail with rocks, short climbs, flow, and so much beauty you'll be planning your next trip before you even leave! Pass the ‘beer tap’ and continue down Tussey Mt Extension, a very fun, fast descent on narrow bench cut trail.

Turn left onto Leniency Trail, a smooth fast machine built trail with banked berms. As your descent slows you'll come to a small meadow and a trail intersection with Bailout trail, stay on Leniencey trail and come back up to Tussey Mt Extension and take a left.

Follow the trail out Treaster Kettle road and turn left. In a half mile, turn right onto Thickhead Mt Road and climb until you see the sign for John Wert trail. Ride down this gated camp road and across the gas line where the beauty of John Wert begins, a flat technical trail that has two large rock gardens that can prove challenging to even the best riders. Unfortunately, John Wert comes to an end, where you'll turn right onto Bear Meadows Road.

Take a left at North Bear Meadows Road and then a right onto Upper Lonberger trail. Upper Lonberger is your rocky and technical, but Lower Lonberger is fast and fun.

You'll be back to where you started your initial climb, enjoy your descent down to the parking lot.

The 36 mile version is the perfect length between race and ride. I'm coming back from vacation the weekend before this race, so I'm not sure if I will actually be racing or riding it. I'm sure my mind will change the second we take off. Plus its on a Saturday, so you head out of work a tad early friday, Camp out (or hotel it up) and race Saturday morning, hang out all afternoon, get some pizza in State College and head hope in time to beat the sun down, get some rest and wake up to do your Sunday chores 🙂

Pat when are you going to be in the ADK. Maybe the Black Fly Challenge could be a post HOH target?

That has possibilities ! little less distance too.

My Dad has a place just off lk george on the west side - so any time the schedule allows, we head up. It is usually dependent on my kid's sports schedule. Travel baseball is feb->july.....

nice!

u gunna change your avatar to Suge?

Highly recommended to do this race....and the stoopid 50 is another. Both these races will make you go back everytime. Epic riding there....

So about a week in. got a couple nice rides, and was really jonesin' to go out today. Decided not to do it for safety reasons (road was my only choice) - and now regretting it. as the french say, "c'est la vie."

Iggy might be more interested in "Laissez-faire" to preserve his vision. 😀

had a few business things to take care of this week, and so far so good. which is a shortened french phrase, but i don't remember it. maybe Lou?

So - appetite control is working, liquor consumption is dialed down to 1. which means 1 monday-thursday, and try to keep it under control on the weekend, which worked out really well, even during the superbowl - had 4or5 maybe from 5:30->end-of-game - this would usually be double. funny, i just filled in with water.

need to start stretching. strength - 1 vowel/7 consonants - try to beat that ratio. well, the bowflex need to come out of hiding - both for my kid and me. tomorrow's project, along with some sort of ride - would like to hit some climbs, but i'm not sure RV will work - uphill will be a hike, and dh will be unsurvivable.

anyway, feeling very motivated after a week, even after missing today.

No pictures, sorry - maybe tomorrow, when i put the new chainrings on the roadie...perhaps the old ones could be used for some artwork....nah. 🙂

oh, and thanks for the chiming in with the motivation and suggestions.

well, tried out the food log - and yeah, it made me think about eating. then for some moronic reason, it wanted me to eat less than 1600 cals a day to lose 1.5 lbs a week. ok. 4 days later, i'm sore, unmotivated, and grouchy. Can the food log, that is way too low a number.

my usual move when hungry is to drink some water - if it doesn't go away, your body is probably talking. going back to grabbing a quick snack - and not worrying about it.

anyway, we have another monday storm queued up, so let's see what happens this week. i'm going to try to get back to normal, after having some beer, rotisserie chix (home version), and smashed potatoes. and a scoop of ice cream.....

oh - It was my son's 12th b-day. Roadie (chris) came over with his bride, and we made the kid a cake.....No Pirate Bob tho, didn't want any hair in the sand....

2015-02-07%2018.10.15.jpg

Nice cake! I hear you on diet, if I do what a log tells me I would be dead. Slow and steady wins the race.

Keep it going!!!!

Motivational Reset Needed

Well dang, at last report, riding, eating, drinking were all directionally correct - then the wife comes home from a business trip and announces everyone was sick in the office.

That was just before presidents/valentines weekend. Jinxed, and in upstate ny - watching the bathers.....the sore throat/cough/sneeze settles in.

2015-02-14%2014.38.43.jpg

always hungry when feeling like crap - and 10 days of it screwed everything up. That lead into last week - feeling better, but need to reel in the diet again, and get back on the bike. Conditions didn't help, but that is all mental.

So short track arrives, and i'm planning on sweeping the course - so I lined up in back. Pre-rode on the 29r, and it wasn't terrible, well, it was, but it wasn't - just going to be different. Woody tells me to swipe someone's fat bike - his is already out (thanks for the tip) and 30 seconds later Jim offers me his "pit fat bike"

ok - nothing new on race day - so why not a ss fat bike.....never been on a ss or fat...but hell, i'm already sweeping the silly field. Line up in back, and off we go. funnel into the single track, and it grinds to a slow crawl - expected. But i'm riding, and others are walking/running.

tried to keep the effort consistent, and into the second lap, Kristine caught me - but we were passing people, and took turns letting each other go by depending on who fell over.

so holding at just below tempo pace (cause running by people off trail was not happening) the race went by quickly, and managed to finish 8/25 with lap times which could be improved - and a little more aggressive finish would have moved me to 6th....of course this would have been good for last in the open field, but hey!

So, getting out there, mixing it up, smiling, and falling over a bunch has me motivated to get riding again - diet should come around.

And so the cycle continues....NYC Marathon lottery on Tuesday.
scared-cat-hiding.jpg

Yeah, fatbike.....

Excellent start to March!

Great finish on your first race fat&single. 🙂

Three weeks to HoH and warmer weather should be arriving this week.

-W

And the drum roll.....No NYC Marathon for me - so back to philly i go. Sign up for the full, run the half 🙂
This was the third year of not getting in (i thought last year was) - so next year is it!

Skipped riding between short track races - again, just a lack of motivation to put on the gear, and get on the bike.
Got out last night, and that felt really good! Tested out the clean-up on the Paragon - everything seems to be "smooth"
so all i need is a scalpel frame? 😀

HOH should be interesting - really don't know what to expect at this point, so i'll consider it an adventure, have SAG
on speed dial, and off we go. I'm planning on riding there and home afterwards - so i'll get my century. I think.
there is always the kid management problem that pops up now and then. Maybe i should add enough flat miles before, and
hitch a ride home?

Oh, last short track results - was happy again to be in the front of the middle! Was able to ride all the mud and rocks, and
strangely placed 4x4s - although i ran them the first couple times because people were standing in/next to them. looking forward to a future
rematch with @extremedave. Still very tentative with riding because of my neck - it keeps getting a bit better, but there is always a little tightness.

Diet. I'm hungry, and off-plan. Been bad about getting up, and jamming down some yogurt before getting hungry - cause once
i hit the hunger stage, it is grazing time. then look out, cause the leftovers are being raided.

Should be a good week. i feel an allaire trip coming, a stop in SLB, maybe throw some stones into the surf, ride the hook.

Currently painting a hallway, and trim. One of my least favorite things to do.

No pictures this time around.
