My low(er) end laptop has no HDMI or video ports. For starting, the laptop and HDMI is the easy button. If the laptop has an actual video card, it may even be decent.

Additional confusion: The Apple TV app on my smart TV doesn't require the Apple TV box to work. My TV has native Airplay. What does the box provide other than on-board storage?Apple makes it very confusing.
There are 2 separate Apple Products.
There is the Apple TV which we are all talking about here, and that is just a box/device that you buy and use, it's just a device, no subscription.
It is this.
Then there is Apple TV+ which is a streaming service, like Netflix, Hulu etc.... and you need a subscription for that, but it has no connection to Rouvy or Zwift etc...

this is correct. you dont need the ATV device to watch AppleTV content but you do need it if you want to run native apps like Rouvy, Zwift or other online games. The Apple TV app on your smart TV is likely (I could be wrong) just for the steaming service, again think Netflix, Hulu, Max etc...
Because Apple is both a hardware company (obvisoulsy) but also a content provider, so they compete with Both Samsung and Spoitfy.
The box is totally independent and not connected to the content they sell.
For most things, yeah. Rouvy runs as an app on the Apple TV box and is recommended as the best choice for getting rides up on the TV. That, and you can download the video routes to the Apple TV storage to eliminate any streaming glitches. Reviews seem to say the Apple TV UI is snappier than the smart TV UI's.You bypass the box all together with most Smart TVs.
Then what would we talk about here? I'm an American, dammit. I demand my 4K 3D surround sound smell-o-vision immersive fake riding experience. You could just prop the iPad on the handlebars and call it a day 🤷
If that's the case, you need to upgrade the trainer. Virtual shifting is pretty goodThen what would we talk about here? I'm an American, dammit. I demand my 4K 3D surround sound smell-o-vision immersive fake riding experience.

I mean go big or go home :I just tried it with the iPad and Airplay screen mirroring. It's better, but still a few stutters here and there. Slightly annoying that the aspect ratio mirrors that of the iPad, so it's letterboxed on the sides of the big screen. I may have to break down and get the Apple TV box.
Man, this $100 trainer is the gift that keeps on taking - thru axle conversion kit - $50, Apple TV box - $150, Rouvy subscription - $20/month, new TV & wall bracket - $300...
What's wrong with real shifting on the trainer? If that's the case, you need to upgrade the trainer. Virtual shifting is pretty good
Yep. I steer, too, but nothing happens.People shift on the trainer?
Idk, I guess I had an older bike on it and never bothered spacing out the cassette and getting the shifting right so it wasn't as enjoyable as virtual. If I had the patience to put my actual bike on/off im sure it would be fine...What's wrong with real shifting on the trainer?
maybe I’m doing it wrong but I just let the trainer adjust to the power and pedal. I don’t shift…??People shift on the trainer?
Sounds like you are riding in erg mode, yes?.maybe I’m doing it wrong but I just let the trainer adjust to the power and pedal. I don’t shift…??
Yes - I use workout where the resistance changes to match my power output for that interval. I never used sim mode...yet.Sounds like you are riding in erg mode, yes?.
The whole point of Rouvy / Zwift etc.. in sim mode IS to shift and simulate riding outdoors (well at least for me).
