The Indoor Cyclist's support thread

Liking it is a stretch (for me at least). I think I learned how to temporarily shut off the part of my brain that finds it monotonous.

I also keep “busy” by constantly switching between shows, music, adjusting the fan, counting down the time left in the current interval, drinking mix or eating gels. Or whatever wrist is keeping my mind from going numb.

And like I said in a previous post, it’s easier to go hard than easy indoors. I did 90 minutes of sweet spot today and I think that level of intensity is a perfect indoor workout. 90 minutes of Zone 2 would be way harder to get through.
Lol your "sweet spot" would kill me after 20mins

I'll have to try this....
Take a look at some of the internal workouts 45 min or less. It really makes the time go faster then you are working with smaller blocks of time.

For example today I picked a short crit route I had not done before, put on some hard rap mix on Spotify and did alternating easy then hard loops to see if I could beat my PR ghost.

Did that for an hour and was never really bored because it keeps you paying attention.

Agree with norm, on days when I “recover” and ride easy/ flat/slow to purge the legs it’s boring AF unless I watch YouTube or Netflix.

This really is probably my problem. Prior years I would do a harder workout and watch cheap action movies.

This year I'm filling in an hour of zone 2 the day after a hard run. I really need mix that up a bit.

If you are on Zwift, nothing beats a group ride to keep the brain engaged and help the time fly by.
I even do this for when I need to ride Z2 or even recovery, I will pick one of the easy bot rides and force myself to stick with them for an hour (or whatever time you want), really works great wth both being less bored and also not having a recovery day turn into a threshold ride.

Something new?

Anyone try training peaks virtual? I did my first ride with it today definitely better then doing fixed resistance z2 training. I don't know how it stacks up against zwift, trainer road or rouvy but I'm going to get one of them eventually and all the other traing peaks perks would be really awesome the basic version vs the premium version is pretty drastic as far as data and training planning. 100 bucks a year isn't too bad when you get both virtual plus the regular premium app.

It's closest to Zwift with better physics and racing but far worse graphics and few real people (most "riders" are bots). Trainer Road is 100% trainer programs where you're trying to hit the wattage target on the screen. Presumably most people watch Netflix, etc. Rouvy uses real life locations.

Scored this free 20” Roku smartTV from the local FB group and it fits perfectly with my Zwift setup so now i can watch any streaming stuff on a bigger screen instead of the iPad. I’ll probably move the mini speakers to it that are currently connected to the upper 32” TV since I don’t care about the zwift sounds compared to when I’m watching Netflix, YouTube or Apple TV.

It’s a little low but for now it will work good enough until I can figure out a better monitor TV stand setup than an old file cabinet.

Welp I broke down and I'm actually paying for peloton membership, realistically this will only be 3 months max so not very expensive. The few different types of workouts I did were very similar but it sure does pass the time alot quicker than just staring at a screen with numbers. Speaking of numbers God my numbers are terrible and this type of bike highlights that my body is made up of 99% fast twitch muscles, as soon as efforts are over a minute I sink faster than ocean gate lol .

Can you manual it?

I’d much rather bang out a 5k on the treadmill…which is my morning routine these days.

I have resisted getting a smart trainer. I keep asking myself would it make riding inside better (I have a dumb trainer with a power meter on my bike).

Since it’s free I’ll try the TrainingPeaks program.

Denis Morton is the instructor I like best for rides. Olivia Amato has some good rides too and I believe she also has a cycling background. If you are considering weight lifting at all check out some of the programs by Andy Speer (Total Strength) or Ben Alldis (Stronger You). Andy is very corny but in a tolerable way, and he does a very good job of explaining the moves and reminding you on breathing and posture.

If you are thinking about using Zwift or another on road simulator Smart trainer would be better. Only because of the changing elevation resistance. ERG mode for workouts.
I guess the answer is a Smart trainer is always better.

The smart trainer worth it. IMO. Plus, like I’ve said a few times, keep the sessions short and intense. It keeps it from becoming too boring.

I was also listening to The performance podcast on escape collective. This was all about indoor trainers and they mentioned that women really need to have their fit dialed more than men. just FYI.

I recently replaced my smart trainer with a Zwift bike. So I have one I’d be willing to sell on the cheaper side. LMK if interested.
