Agree with all that has been said about Smart Trainer as a game changer and keeping workout short and challenging

I do Zwift SST short which is eight five minute blocks ( currently 270w and 250w ) Not one boring second. Just trying to keep the cadence high to avoid bogging down and survive the 270w block without HR spiking and rest up a bit on the 250w block.

I have a Wahoo KICKR bike which is superb but any recent gen smart trainer should keep the watts locked in no matter how you flail around ( unlike first gen trainers )

I’d much rather bang out a 5k on the treadmill…which is my morning routine these days.

I have resisted getting a smart trainer. I keep asking myself would it make riding inside better (I have a dumb trainer with a power meter on my bike).

Since it’s free I’ll try the TrainingPeaks program.
Smart trainer really is a game changer for indoor riding. Zwift is nice because they make "pausing" your subscription pretty easy. MyWoosh is free and I thought it was fine. Had to reset the graphics resolution every time you logged in, but the experience was very similar to Zwift (did I mention FREE?). My wife didn't feel the same, so we kept the Zwift subscription.

I don’t know how trainingPeaks works with a smart trainer but I’d add that the smart trainer will be much more effective with things like zwift , rouuvy, mywhoosh where it’s got you following a course and simulates terrain changes.

On the other hand I used my fluid2 and HRM ,speed and cadence sensors for many years on zwift just doing workouts and it was just fine for what I needed.

To me comes down to how you plan to use it and how often. I’ve only really ever used zwift since before that it was just following random free YouTube videos on my laptop.

P.S. For ~$200 for a used smart trainer it's almost a no- brainer if you are riding indoors.

Welp I broke down and I'm actually paying for peloton membership, realistically this will only be 3 months max so not very expensive. The few different types of workouts I did were very similar but it sure does pass the time alot quicker than just staring at a screen with numbers. Speaking of numbers God my numbers are terrible and this type of bike highlights that my body is made up of 99% fast twitch muscles, as soon as efforts are over a minute I sink faster than ocean gate lol .
Look into the PowerZone training programs as well. Using Power Zone numbers feels most like training for actual riding vs taking spin classes if that makes sense

To continue, yes a Smart trainer is absolutely worth it times 100.
If you dpn't get Norms used one, Garmin/Tacx is having a great sale, brand new Flux for $399, I'm guessing that a local shop will have it for the same price.
