The Guitar Player Thread.

Took my gear to the garage and played for about an hr.... holy crap i suck! lol
Like what they said here, keep on playing. Today is very spoon fed when learning to play a guitar. With youtube videos and tablature you can print out over the interweb. It makes it easier for some folks. Back in the day when I started to play guitar I dont have the privilege of free videos and tabs. I listened to a cassette tape of metallica's kill em all album and hit play and rewind just to get the exact notes. I dont think CD's and CD player exist back then, but even so, I cant afford them. I dont have an electric guitar that time and I tried copying the song thru a cheap crappy acoustic guitar. My advice, start with a goal. For example theres a certain band or song you want to play, start from there. Also start with the easiest song or guitar riff. With the help of the internet, you can find almost any mainstream song. I remember getting tablature back in the day, I pay to get a xerox copy of a certain song and its not a very clear copy thats why I settled on listening instead of tabs. Now theres also a device that slows down the guitar solo so you can play it note by note.

Get him a rock band video game lol.

Seriously. Let him join a band or somethin to get him playing. Playing with another musicians will motivate him to play more. That works for me.
"letting" him join a band isnt an issue. My son pretty much has free reign to do whatever.
I asked him last night about getting together with others, and he says he just has no desire to play with others, and that he still loves to play, he just doesnt.

HahahaHA I would do the same exact thing. With the same exact album too...

I used to be really in to metal when I started playing

This is how I learned a lot of stuff back in the day, Tab Books. I have a ton of them. I bought the Master of Puppets and Justice books in 1989 when I started playing and still have them!! They're 2 of my most valued possessions.

These days I use Guitar Pro on the iPad. Type in whatever song you want and the Tab pops up. You can isolate instruments and measures, slow down parts, loop measures for the tricky bits. When I learned Glass Prison I started one measure at time at 1/4 speed, then added measures as I got them, then gradually increased the speed to 100%. Or, 98% as you can see in the video I posted of it. It's a great tool. They have versions of it for every device.

Another trick when your learning a song is to just jam on it to see if you can figure out what scales their using. In Sanitarium for example, Kirk plays the first solo in Em. I'll just play random Em runs over those chords to get familiar with the shapes. There's a good long intro there before the solo comes in so there's plenty of time. Then when I go to learn his actual solo you see the shapes of his runs instead of just looking at numbers in a book. It helps take something you learn from a lick and apply it to your own music down the road. Lots of guys can learn licks but find it hard to jam.

Dude, I just saw them live a couple months ago and it changed my life. For an hour I stood on the side of the stage in disbelief. You can't possibly understand what it's like to hear what those 3 guys do live. 3 guys. 2 guitar players and a drummer. If you closed your eyes you would swear there were 6 guys on stage. Insanity. Real talk. CHANGED MY LIFE. Follow Tosin and Javier on IG, they post licks all day long. (Javier follows me on Strava, he rides bicycles)

Thanks for the reco - never heard of these guys. Just bought 4 songs on iTunes - awesome!

I blew off my ride today because I sat down this morning to learn the "bass" part in Woven Web by Animals as Leaders. 4 hours later, still don't have it, and now I have no skin on my Index finger. Fuck you Tosin!!

This is NOT the Animals as Leaders lick, but an exercise I've devised to get the concept down.

Got in a couple good jams and a pretty complicated sweep lick I keep trying to squeak into this song. Eventually.

I was gonna try to jam something tonight, but everything coming out of my hands is just sounding like garbage this evening. May be because I have blisters on my left hand from swinging a McCloud and a Pulaski while doing trail maintenance on the 2016 Short Track course today. I was dumb and didn't wear work gloves...

Anyway, Here's a clip of my band at Triumph Brewery of New Hope doing a funk-fusion instrumental piece that our bass player, Gary and I wrote. As always, He's always standing outside of the picture...

I think @fidodie was at this show, actually. That was the first time I met Pat in Person.

I love the way the horn section make it funky. Like the tower of power band I love the horn section.

Dude! We cover Tower Of Power tunes sometimes. Here's one, I uploaded this just for you. Nothing impressive guitar-wise on this, but our horns shine.

Loving it bro! I really dig the horn section. What do you mean nothing impresive guitar. You know, a lot of good guitar players struggle on the right hand strumming? Specially in funky stuff. At least I've known some over the years. That funky strumming of yours was impressive!

Here's a little more in depth look at the lick in the last post. Just trying to clean up my chops.

Watching these makes me realize how much I rely on Economy Picking.

Funny, I have never heard of the term 'economy picking'. And BTW, Jim - you are faster than fuck

I agree with @capedoc. That was fast! There's also hybrid picking which is for me its like chicken picking or somethin. Legato always work
