The Guitar Player Thread.

Most of the time it's just to the album with my guitar turned up. The songs that I know very well it's hard to hear the difference and it just sounds like a thicker guitar sound.

I actually know that song. It's not recorded so here's something else that's kinda the same as that. This was a request that I figured out and recorded in about 20 minutes.

Here I'm playing my favorite guitar, an original Ibanez Talman I bought in the 90's. The videos I've posted previous using a Talman is this same guitar after being stripped and completely rebuilt. That's an Ibanez RGA8 hanging on the wall.

If @jimvreeland made an instructional video on how to play a guitar... i would buy it.
Not say capedoc and Sandman98 are not good... its just that jim plays my kind of music.

No problem. I used to be in a metal core death metal band 15 yrs ago. We played the saint in asbury at one point. I used to do my own down tuning to low C and use thicker strings so its not wobbly. The band plays a lot of breakdowns and growling. Dont need a 7string to do heavy stuff. We did some hatebreed, cannibal corpse, lamb of god covers. I used to have a long hair too lol

Yeah, now you need an 8-string!!

Seriously, all the heavy covers I've posted have been on my Talman. 6-String tuned to Drop-B. Most of the bands I listen to use that tuning or 8-strings with Drop-E. I've owned 2 8-Strings and just don't like playing them so if I want to play Animals as Leaders or After the Burial stuff I just use my 7-string with the low string tuned to E. 98% of the time they never play the B on an 8-string anyways.

In my first band we started playing in normal Drop-D, circa 1990ish, by the time we recorded our first demo we switched to Drop-C. Same as System of a Down and a lot of bands at the time. Second band I was in Korn was really popular so we used Drop-A to replicate a 7-string. 3rd band we went back to Drop-C and had stuff using a standard 7-string tuned to B. My 7-string is now almost always Drop-A albeit I no longer use it to play heavy, just to get another octave out of runs without changing positions.

One of the few recorded live shows from my 2nd band. These were in the days before everyone and their mother had a phone and a Facebook account.

Drop-A tuning here. PS-I played bass in this band. PPS-I can play bass, but this is a guitar thread 🙂

Hahaha! 8string is the new 7 string. Animals as leaders are cool too. Tosin for me is not human at all lol. Everytime I watched his youtube vids I put away my guitar hahaha. Did you ever change string gauge when you drop tuned to a 6string guitar? I did at some point. I used to block my floyd trem with a customized jenga block lol

Thats a classic! I used to have a gt-5

Speaking of classics, I have one of these (not reissue - original from the late 70s)

Dude, I just saw them live a couple months ago and it changed my life. For an hour I stood on the side of the stage in disbelief. You can't possibly understand what it's like to hear what those 3 guys do live. 3 guys. 2 guitar players and a drummer. If you closed your eyes you would swear there were 6 guys on stage. Insanity. Real talk. CHANGED MY LIFE. Follow Tosin and Javier on IG, they post licks all day long. (Javier follows me on Strava, he rides bicycles)

And yeah, I play the bottom 6 strings of a 7 string set on my Talman. I also play the bottom 7 strings of an 8 string set on my MH417.

And TREMOL-NO for lyfe!! My Kirk Hammett is the first guitar I've owned without the Floyd Rose blocked.

any advice how I can encourage my 24 year old son to start playing again?

a few years ago he played pretty regularly. One day I was listening to Pachelbel's canon in d and he asked if he could borrow the cd. A few days later I came home to him playing it on his electric guitar. he taught himself to play it by listening to the cd. I was amazed when I walked into the house and heard it, then turned the corner and it was him playing, it sounded great.

but video games stole him away and his guitar sadly sits in a corner 🙁

Get him a rock band video game lol.

Seriously. Let him join a band or somethin to get him playing. Playing with another musicians will motivate him to play more. That works for me.

Is this your son?

Took my gear to the garage and played for about an hr.... holy crap i suck! lol

That's the first step. Trust me, if you make a habit of these one hour sessions, you'll suck less and less.

Keep it up and good to hear you're busting your shit back out, dood!
