Sobriety- Alcohol vs ice cream?

I'm recently sober. About 3 weeks in. I've drank for a long time and until recently I never had a problem with it. My dr however pointed out that alcohol is poison. He obviously put an asterisk on it but it made me realize I am slowly damaging my body(heart and liver most directly). With that said, it's always been a vice for me. Now that I got this news it's been easier to step away so far. My question is, I see many people quit but immediately resort to the vice of ice cream(or sugar in general) and wondering if going this route is really any healthier? I mean, sugar is a poison too right?

Good work on the three weeks Doug. Very common for there to be some form of ‘substitution’ when giving up a substance addiction. The good news is that ice cream won’t mess with your judgement or ability to drive a car. If you find yourself excessively leaning into sugar or caffeine then you will be able to do some work and dig into the root cause on what is causing you to be uncomfortable enough to lean on these things to feel better.

That’s not possible when one is drunk…

Scotch and ice cream are my two vices. Scotch is direct poison. Ice cream~ fat~ fatty liver~ cardiovascular disease is slow poison. Ice cream in moderation is easier and more beneficial. They both can be hard as fuck to moderate.

There are levels of healthy. Alcohol is a level 1 carcinogen. Sugar is not. Not to mention you're probably getting a fair amount of sugar in your alcohol anyway.

Highly, highly recommend reading This Naked Mind by Annie Grace. It was the light switch for me getting sober 5.5 years ago. AA never really appealed to me personally.

I am sure Alcohol is not good for the body. But how about having like 1 or 2 beers over the weekend? Is that really bad for the body as well?

Everything is poison if you take enough of it. Too much sugar can raise your cholesterol since glucose is one of the starting substrates for lipid biosynthesis in your liver. I lowered my cholesterol over by over 100 by drastically reducing my sugar intake.

Both alcohol and sugar are addictive, that’s for sure. Alcohol has the added detriment that in excess it can impair judgement and motor functions. Sugar doesn’t do that. I personally drink only occasionally (think glass of wine at a dinner out) but I’ve never had a problem with alcohol. Ice cream is delightful and I have it here and there but I don’t crave it or keep it at home.

Without sounding trite, I would stay off the alcohol and work on the underlying needs you have. Don’t penalize yourself for having ice cream or a treat, but also try not to justify that behavior every day.

Please, enlighten us with some science on this one. Please. lol.

If you’re sitting on the couch all day, yes.
And even if those sugars are bad for the athlete, I'd argue someone living their life on a bike taking in those calories for performance is still living a better life than the one on the couch taking in those calories.

I ate a sleeve of oreos yesterday and like 5 fruit snack packets within a 3 hour window, am I going to get diabetes?

I think the key takeaway is excess. If you couldn't control yourself and ate a sleeve of Oreos every day, and then couldn't stop at just one sleeve, it would eventually catch up with you even as an athlete. Just like one drink at dinner is OK, but not 4, and not every night, and not if you can't stop.

For the OP - to answer the Q asked: no, swapping daily excessive alcohol with daily excessive sugar is not a good solution. So do what you need to do to keep you away from alcohol, but don't swap in ice-cream. My 2c
