Glen Park ESC enduro!!
Well Done!!! Great catching up a little before dropping into stage 5...And that chute was bonkers by the time we got to it on race day.... The ESC meat report is a must watch after every ESC race...Another great episode is from the opening round up at Diamond Hill...Enjoy :) The Meat Report I have to add the obligatory "This section is way gnarlier than it looks"

Great work, felt like shit and got 8th? Seems pretty good to me.

enduro is really appealing to me, but man, that time waiting time seems like the opposite of appealing. Is there any way to improve the flow?

Let the riders vary the order of the stages. Or allow stage 1 and 2 at the same time. No matter how much they stagger the starts there’s still a backlog on stage 1. I’m sure there’s practical reasons for this, but it could be done.

Great seeing you out there Rob and congrats to your son, that was awesome.

Thanks... I mean I'm happy with it but I'm also not racing the pro class for Enduro... So for esc it's like pro or non pro age-groups... which is not to say there are not super fast people in the non Pro classes..... I'm just motivated to get better I know for a fact I leave time out on the course and I am motivated to try and fix that....

As far as the wait goes... this being a post covid ESC race which I'm guessing had about 300 racers... I was pretty sure it was going to be busy for that first stage.... And they run things pretty officially... Whereas with mass, I have just ridden around with Kris all day and was done early.... but then I had to wait for everyone else in my class to finish so I still had to wait all day.... I love the format and it's the least amount of misery I have ever experienced in a bike race... very fun... but when you factor in pre riding the course, it is a long day and probably multiple days. It's just a long day anyway you slice it if you want to see your results

How about an update on the mustang? Looking at your last 2 pages you'd think this site is about mountain biking...

So I thought I would take this time to answer @rick81721 s question and post a little update on my vacation as well.....

First the mustang....I have been randomly posting stuff in the car thread since last fall, but nothing organized....

Getting the car back out on the road has been pretty awesome.....

September 6th last year was the 25th anniversary of my father dying....I had a goal to get the car on the road by then and I managed to do this with 1 day to spare....

That weekend I got the car sorted out enough to drive it around and to some local car shows

took the family for their first ride

Very special day where I spent alot of time thinking about my promise I made to my dad when I was 16 and he was in the hospital that i would NEVER sell this car for any reason....and that I would take good care of it.

Been driving it around, taking it to local car shows here and there.....working out some of the squeaks and rattles....few pics from the past 8 months

little in car video i made, dam is it nice to hear that sound again

Most of the major problems have been sorted, the one thing im trying to figure out is oil on my spark plugs....

I had thought it was the high volume oil pump causing the valve covers to flood and eventually causing the oil to get sucked in thru the valve seals....but since the fall I put oil restrictors in the rocker supply then I replaced the valve seals...no change.

So I took the day off from work today on the 2nd and said what the hell...im going to test EVERYTHING....but I THINK i have this figured out now.....

So first, I wanted to put the valve cover filling with oil to bed once and for all...so I just got out my angle grinder and cut the top off my old rusty PBF valve cover......Started the engine and ran it for 15-20min until it was good and warmed up....

Only in the back of the head did the oil level get up and over the lip of the valve cover.....certainly not filling up and the rear drain back hole looks to be flowing well. So i think I can rule out the valve seals.

Next, I got out the borescope and started peaked down the intake to see what I could see,.....this was not nearly as easy as i thought to manipulate the camera down the ports, but I did find some things I would dont look good....my SD card wouldnt work, so i did my best with my phone for the pics here

lot of shiny stuff after the intake/head junction...its not coming out clear in the pics, but sure looked like oil to me and there was definitely oil on the borescope when I removed it....and 0 oil in the plenum (from pcv)

i managed to get the scope close enough in cyl #3 to look at the top of the valve and it certainly looked wet with oil

this is also cyl # 1 a few years ago when I took the engine out of the car and took the manifold off after 15 years...you can see that same circle which is something in the casting, maybe a gate

when i saw this, i thought the intake gaskets were leaking and thus I replaced them.

I thought this might be interesting too.....I took this picture of my edlebrock RPM right after i took the intake off in ~2016....forget which port this is...obviously a corner...guessing #5

You can see the impression from the old gasket, but looks like coked oil on the bottom of the port

Anyway, so by this point im thinking I have an intake gasket issue, but I also did a compression test.

By this point the engine was now just warm, as in I could put my hand on the head and it was just warm, not hot. I dont know what numbers would be good, but a few things:

* the bottom end of this engine was put together in 1998, im pretty sure we used TRW forged pistons and stock compression...which was 10.5:1 for a 390 GT 10.5 Dont remember anything about the rings 23 years later now.

1: 172
2: 162
3: 170
4: 175
5:175
6: 165
7: 170
8: 180

So by the numbers, it has great compression.

I dont know how many miles this engine has on exactly, speedo was broken for a while....but 23 years, im sure at least 50 1/4 mile passes before I got my 12.80@110 and decided to quit while I was ahead.

So I retorked the intake manifold, but what im thinking it that there is some small bit of interference that i cant see and it not obvious...The heads are 54 years old and could have been milled...But I think the intake is not sitting down all the way and there is a mismatch between the angle of the head and the intake...under vacuum oil is getting sucked up from the valley below. So im going to leave this be for the summer as it seems to go away once the engine gets fully heated up, which also leads me to this its the intake....About the only other thing myself or the FE engine experts can think of is that the oil rings were installed upside down and that would cause smoke constantly.

Killington / Kingdom 2021.......

So on sunday the 4th I rolled out of my house at 7am headed for killington to meet @Ryan.P for a couple of days of downhilling......I have heard killington is amazing on the bike....I know on skis I have been mostly meh on it, but I have been hearing about the bike park for a while now.....I did have a plan to do more downhilling this year and quite frankly, i have not been to a DH park since last october. Going to creek is just such a chunk of my day, its hard to make it happen. So I do want to get better at jumping table tops, but I dont really have the opportunity to practice alot. Anyway, so going to killington....I was looking forward to trying some "bigger then on the trail" sized jumps again for the first time this year....but also didnt want to do anything risky that might prematurely end my vacation.

Ryan and I wasted no time getting on the mountain and exploring.....
1626111808507.png

First day the snow shed lift was broken, and the mountain was in a cloud, but we still had a great time on Rams head making runs on black magic and steel panther. we did head up to the top a couple of times, but it was kinda hard to see
1626180498981.png

1626180534940.png

Good first day, I was kinda hoping I would magicly remember how to jump my bike, or that something happened in the past 9 months since the last time i tried.....but alas, no....we got to those monster table tops on black magic and I did not push the send button.

Monday was MUCH better...sun came out, lifts opened....Liquid Art breakfast was on point
1626181162253.png

We had ran into Mike Kulp at the end of the day on sunday and met up with him again. Mike is great rider, I dont know if he is as good at jumps as Ryan is, but much better than me anyway. We did a proper day of exploring most everything on the mountain. I think we hit just about every trail save for some of the green trails. I started getting a little more comfortable...the table tops on the snow shed side were more my speed....but really, I much prefer the rough trails like steel panther.

Mike doing the drop at the start of goat skull
1626181654717.png

Sadly for mike soon after this he had a crash on black magic and jacked up his knee....he had to call it a day and limp home. Further reminding me that I have 6 more days of riding left and dont do anything over my head.

Back at the hotel.....seriously, fucking cornhole is on ESPN now....I have had this conversation with @muddybike and it infuriates me that so many legitimate sports...were legitimate athletes cant get on TV (and thus cant make a living) but people are paying money to watch other people throw bean bags. Fuck espn with all the fucks....They only put that on to outrage people and thus get them to stay on the channel for 60 seconds saying? "how is this shit on TV????" But yes, i saw that it was sponsored by bush beans.
1626182101235.png

Anyway, next morning Ryan and I get up and start making our way to kingdom....We stop for breakfast and I get a bacon egg and cheese....ryan gets something without bacon, but they give him bacon anyway.....bc this is vermont and you will eat bacon and fucking like it.....So I also had a side of bacon and it was glorious
1626182349491.png

So 2 days at killington...I have to say, the place is AWESOME on a bike....really a great mix of everything...multiple lifts was really nice...you can just move away from the lines whenever you want. Its neat going all the way to the top, but I wouldnt say any of the runs RIGHT off the top were all that great. But def. worth the trip, I think I might take the family back there next time.

Kingdom!

Ryan and I met @Norm and @Dominique at the Tiki bar, got my passes and then headed out into the magic kingdom.
1626182987865.png

im such a huge fan of vermont in the summer...temps are usually great...looks beautiful and smells even better.
1626183079162.png

I guess we did a quick highlights tour...strava tells me I have ridden sidewinder 41 times....its still not getting old. Not my favorite trail at KT, but I certainly love it...not sure I have a favorite KT trail, depends on the day and the bike im riding

The house is really nice, on the ski hill so the ride home will be fun
1626183525284.png

Iggy shows up later with 177 lbs of pulled pork and some buns.

Dam its good to be back....such a great trip with a great crew....

Day 2
Wake up early and head to the super market with my man @capedoc......rocking out to jamiroquai the whole way. We each spend $102 on food, then hurry back to make the morning ride.

This day is a little more organized. Well @Norm plans things, I just tag along and ride all the things. I dont really care what we ride...but we were going to hit moose alley and then black bear, so this should be an awesome day. Id say what I really enjoy most about kingdom...if I had to pick a favorite...I love doing long runs like moose alley or black bear at max speed....7, 8, 9, 10min of flat out DH where your legs are screaming but you still trying to go as fast as you can. In NJ, there really isnt much like this, so its just something different that I enjoy. Do I love moose alley? kinda....do I love trying to run moose alley flat out and do it in less than 10min? YES!

So we climb up and down this new way to the pavilion at the top of black bear....which includes this short fun DH called shonter shuffle....good stuff....Kind of the long way, but it had some nice trail mixed in.

This field off moose deuce was amazing
1626184809173.png

I took a bunch of video that im not going to bother showing you bc you will be bored
1626184972277.png

So finally we get going on black bear....god the top section on that trail is just so perfect....the top as in the first 3minutes of DH...which is like a fairly long NJ DH. We session that 2 or 3 times, I cant remember....Its soooo good. Then the group splits up a bit...
@Ryan.P has been talking to me non stopped about the stormin norman gap...and to be honest, I just remember it as a rock that you could maybe drop off of...I mean it didnt seem like anything crazy...like in my head, I would do it, so big deal.....

So half of us head down stormin norman and were going to stop and this rock jump...I still dont get it fully, but if you know Ryan....when he says its big, or a challenge, i can assure you it is.
1626185471884.png

As you can see....I thought ryan meant he was going to ride to the end of this rock and jump off....which ok, isnt easy, but I mean I would do THAT.....

But no, what ryan actually means is he is going to jump all of the things and land down the hill......ohhhhhh....So for me looking at it from the top....it just looked kinda far, maybe 20ft at least and its also a blind step down...so you wont see the landing until you are well into the air. I mean its Ryan, and im sure he can do it, but that said it would have been exhausting carrying his dead body from there all the way to the road.

Ryan put a little extra mustard on it for good measure....and when a bike jump doesnt need slowmo to look big....you can imagine how it looked "IRL"

I also ran my gopro that was on my head....I show you this one bc it involves @Mitch yelling at me...which is always entertaining

I feel like all members of mtbnj have some magic trick they are great at.....Ryans is just probably the most impressive lol

After watching this some of us pedaled back up to the top....I wanted to make a flat out run from the pavillion to the bottom of black bear. This is somewhere around 10min of DH with almost 0 pedaling and about 1000 things to pump thru, double, perfect turns, high speeds.....its like one of the 7 wonders of the world...of biking. maybe 7 or 8 min in you start thinking....there is seriously something not right in the head with whoever put all of this together....its like the dirt version of a Dali painting. I ip down from the top in under 10min, the bottom half in under 7....exhausting, but so so fun. Im much better now jumping that last year....maybe not big table tops, but i can boost small jumps now which i couldnt last year....this really helps amp on the speed on black bear.....

Anyway, after this most everyone packs up and goes home....but when @JimN s around, the party never stops until someone dies, or its dinner time....whichever comes first So me, @shrpshtr325 and Jim press on and ride back to Kingdom proper for more fun.
1626186599434.png

So we go back to sidewinder, I think did it 3 times? or 4 time? I cant remember to be honest....Jim skips the bench climb and just goes straight up the road....doing this means you can run sidewinder in about a 7 min circle....If you are with a group, you can do sidewinder twice in the time it takes them to go down and back up the switchback climb....Then we did a bunch of other stuff, new T, kitchell, I really cant remember....Finished with the climb back up the road to the house and a little over 4hrs moving. Then I ate a mountain of Norm and Ds currie chicken and it was fabulous.

Amazing day!

So I went on Strava to check how many times I have ridden it.

1. Hard to believe that there is only 1 day between where I sit now and the last time I rode it. Feels like 48 days not 48 hours
2. Strava says I have done it 32 times
3. This:

OMG, that's great. Can you post the video with the minute before the jump so I can hear when someone says "here he comes" please. Thanks..

I was so pissed, laying in the dirt FOR 5 MINUTES, waiting for him.

You guys were killing it all week.

I uploaded my @Ryan.P video to youtube:

It's a little wonky because I recorded it in slow-mo, but that's not how it uploaded.

but when @JimN s around, the party never stops until someone dies

The party doesn't stop if someone dies, it just goes on without them. Unless I die, and then the party's over.

Jim skips the bench climb and just goes straight up the road....doing this means you can run sidewinder in about a 7 min circle

If you go up the woods road and cut through the woods to Sidewinder before the ex-lemonade stand, it's 4.5 minutes round trip for a slowpoke like me. The best is when you get to the bottom and see people hanging out, and then they are still there on your next lap, and you can see the WTF look on their faces.

Me likey Sidewinder.

Day 3:

This day started out again with me, @JimN and @shrpshtr325 deciding to spice it up a notch and ride from the house rather than drive down to the tiki bar.....We are also joined by one of our newest teammates @Meatball Mia....Mia has been joining us at our wildcat wednesday rides for a couple of months now and at this point she has more than earned our respect. We have thrown MANY stupid challenges at her so far and she laughed them off.....then we moved on to the "NO NO....ITS TOO EVIL.... NOT THAT!!!!!!!" bag of challenges and she doesnt seem to mind those either....Most 17 year old riders I know love to hit jumps and ride lift chairs....Mia on the other hand seems to prefer smashing rocks, bombing downhills, crushing uphills, and punishing old people, myself included.....Then she makes us cookies and other sweet treats.

So we meet up with the rest of the crew for a tour of the white school side....@norm screws us all up and makes us climb and descend kitchel first....a purely bob ross happy accident. We decided to give the good and you loop another try....I think it reminded everyone of why we haven't done it in 3 years....but its trail and im all about doing all the trail. From there we did farm junk, skydive then did the trek over to this new trail called oziris or something....osomething....Its a long climb up and over to the other side and along the way you realize its probably best descended going the other direction, but it still beats the road climb
I snapped this pic, but it doesnt really tell the story of this climb

1626194505679.png

view at the top was amazing tho

1626194551190.png

Then we hit the emmas sanctuary trail which I think is my favorite new trail if you don't count the black bear stuff.....unfortunately, the climb out is a wall and it hurts....We run into Mia's dad on the way up and convince him to join us.....
1626195675748.png

The group now splits up....Norm and the rest of the crew head out...Me, @JimN , @shrpshtr325, @Meatball Mia and her dad start making our way over to sidewinder.....

Jim again pushes "enter" and starts the patented "Jim Nagy sidewinder infinite loop." This climb is much shorter of course, but it hurts and at about hour 3, its just like flinging matches all over the place. We are still a LONG way from home.....Mias dad survives 1 loop, Mia and I do 3, bill does 4, and Nagy does 5. After this we hit up bareback, then regroup at the old snack shack.....Mia seems to have the same response every time we ask her if we should wait for her dad
1626195582621.png

So we direct him to the easiest way home and then press on.......

Now we were 4
1626195768311.png

This is where I really love riding with Nagy...bc it reminds me of when i was a kid and you would just throw out the dumbest ideas....like HEY HOW ABOUT WE WRITE OUR NAMES IN BURNING ROCKET FUEL!!!!!!! THAT WOULD BE AWESOME! And everyone is like...omg, thats a bad idea.....but NOWAY am I going to be the one that says no!

So we were tossing around the idea of just going directly back to the house, like via the road....Bill even mentioned something like having someone meet us in town with his truck for a ride home.....We then said, no problem bill....we would never make fun of you forever for doing that. So we make our way back to "osomething" ....along the way, Mia tells us about how her longest ever ride was about 2.5 hrs...we were now well over 3. She is not slowing down, not even a little bit....So we climb back to the top and then the long decent back down and out to the road....Well we are kinda near kitchel...road climb back up, but whatever.....so we do that......Then we do it one more time for good measure. Now we are at about 4 hrs....ok, so we havent killed Mia yet....But then Jim comes up with a great idea.....An Idea so EVIL, he was like Prince humperdink using the life sucking machine....

HAHA We shall now climb "burnham up" back to the house! Then he took the life sucking machine lever and moved it to 50 with a sinister laugh
1626196761683.png

Surely this would kill our young friend......Bill and I lead the way up this 20min or so climb....it has some steep tricky sections, so you cant go too slow.....and you need to power up them. Well, Mia is still back there, but now the torture maven is starting to fall off the back......She made every tricky part of this climb with ease and rather than breaking, she instead just broke Jim....who is usually: "the life sucking machine"

After this climb we then decided to do one more stupid thing....Climb the ski hill and ride roly grail back down to the house....This was another 20+ min of road climbing, but the to finish on roly grail was awesome....In the end I had 4:51 moving, 38 miles and 5000ft of climbing.

Jim mentioned to Mia how this is only Kingdom...easy miles....she may have foiled his plan this time...but next time we will try this at wildcat/fugawe....lol.

All jokes aside....really fun and memorable day.....its not too often that we get people who want to come along with us and suffer...and ill say, that often times...I dont even want to do nagy type suffering....she's been a fun addition to our crew for sure.

Then we got back, showered and like an hour later Mia returned with a giant plate of cookies......We devoured the entire plate as an appetizer prior to @MadisonDan s amazing bacon wrapped chicken. Followed by another great night of hanging with the crew.
