Glen Park Enduro and a little update on all things biking in 2020
I had to go back and look, it was Sept. 23rd 2019 since I last raced a bike, which was the bearscat.....thats the longest hiatus I have had from bike racing since I started back in 08. Thanks covid
So had the world not ended, I cant say I was jumping up and down excited to do XC again for the 13th year in a row.....I feel like i have gotten into this rut with XC, bc quite frankly, even racing pro class, its become rather routine...and while the races arent "easy"...I feel like I have reached the top of my little XC racing mountain...which in the grand scheme is more like an ant hill...but that said, I still love XC, I just look for the races I enjoy now.
Last fall
@muddybike was telling me about her idea to focus on enduro this year and got me thinking this might be a nice change of pace. Enduro has it problems, but just the pure racing of it.....when you strip off the pre riding, the prep, the pedaling your ass up the same hill over and over and over, fancy bikes, lots of driving......Just the pure racing is about as fun as it gets IMO. Its fast, its social, its a very chill atmosphere...the misery factor is very low...at least for an XC weenie like myself...and when your out there ripping downhill, hitting jumps...what a rush.
I had done about 4 or 5 enduros prior to today....I have always done them with little prep and a less than stellar bike. When I decided to get into this last year, I planned to take it a little more seriously....Which you know..... change my whole diet, hire a new coach, work out like crazy, squats BRO!.....ya no actually...in fact i didnt do any of that ...But I did go out and by myself a new Santa Cruz Bronson....Because step 1 should always be buying some piece of equipment that is capable beyond your limits...then you will work harder to justify your purchase....At least this is how it works for me...your results may vary. Actually, I was riding my trigger at glen Park around this time, put it into a tree and broke the frame...which made this decision to buy a new bike a little easier. So with a new bike,
@muddybike,
@Chris26er and the crew always wanting to smash downhills....I was getting excited for 2020.
Well ya, than covid....which pretty much sunk any and all plans I had for this year....outside of just riding my bike as much as I can.
So today, all of the plans of last fall finally came together. This was my first attempt to give enduro a proper effort. This started with pre riding the course on Friday...sessioning a few things with the crew....running my gopro and trying to remember which stage has what jump, hole, death trap, quick sand, etc....Making some course notes...getting all of the jumps....ill say it as "down"....as in, ill get over them, but im not going to make it look pretty like
@Ryan.P....It is an individual sport, but I think there is alot to be gained from a team effort....I cant tell you how many jumps I have had Ryan tow me into.
The Race:
Sadly, the thing I love most about Enduro was not possible today...Usually we all hang out together as a team and ride around....its one of the things I love most about this sport. But covid rules meant we had to go off in our age groups. It ended being me, 6er, Johnny Nickelson and Pat. Which was fun a group. We rolled up around 11 and over to stage 1..
I might race alot, but Enduro is just so different than XC in so many ways. To start...the speed and being right on the edge of crashing factor....I once read a quote from a Top Gun instructor (a real one, not "HOLY SHIT ITS VIPER") about how they want their pilots to fly their planes..."One inch from out of control at times, but in a purposeful manner"....Thats how I like to think about racing enduro. As fast as possible, in control, but just barely
To start your day of riding...you are going from 0 to turn volume to 11 in 1 second....no downhill warm up...as in, you just need to instantly remember how to ride your bike at max speed.....So stage 1 didnt have a great start, sluggish, but I hit the lines exactly as I had planned, cleared the jumps without issue, however at the finish which was super steep hill, I slid right past the timing box....this cost X seconds, dont know for sure, but EVERY second in an enduro race is very important.
Stage 2....This starts with fast, flat, loose turns always making me feel slow...I have a hard time pushing them without the bike getting loose....Then as i came into the first jump it occurred to me that I had never sprinted at this thing full power before...im now going WAY WAY faster than I have ever hit this...I did the math quick and decided it would be best to slow down and not crash...Crashing in an enduro can be detrimental to your overall time so i usually lean towards the conservative side....Anyway, I cleared the jump, slower than I would have liked, but everything else went pretty well...
Stage 3 (stage 5)
We skipped ahead to stage 5 bc it had the most pedaling and the idea was to do that while our legs were fresher...made sense. Pedaling is good for me.....ill take it in an enduro where ever I can get it....And this stage had quite a bit....even had a small uphill...I remember hitting this uphill in a tall gear and just kicking it over hoping my chain wasnt going to snap.....now with your HR at max, you head into these steep loose turns with a few drops....i always find that transition from sprinting to holding the bike steady thru loose turns tricky...made it thru clean and now I was starting to feel pretty good.
Then back to stage 3...Stage 3 is my favorite...Pedaling up top, into steep/loose switch back turns, into a solid rock garden, to a long/fast/straight section to the finish.....This bit of trail just feels built for my 27.5....Its the one section where I feel like "im going fast"....The rock garden is not super hard, but you need to aim and keep your bike on a line...if you do that, its cake. Came out of there, sprinted the DH....at a speed way higher than I ever tried before....little pucker, but made it thru with no issues..
Stage 4
This to me was the hardest stage, the upper portion is very fast, VERY loose, off camber...loose turns, lots of speed...into a really fun double jump...but then you switch gears and enter this very steep/narrow chute where you are in a full lock slide trying to navigate between trees and keep from dropping off a ledge....Just riding it isnt too hard per say...racing it where you are thinking...."ok ride it, but ride it as fast as possible"...gets tricky. I was really happy that I kept the bike upright and felt like I kept a good speed to the bottom.
In all a good effort. With the exception of missing the timing box on stage 1 I dont think I had a big mistakes....Each stage tho, I feel like if I went back and hit them again today, I would go faster. There was still something in every stage that I didnt get right.
Stage 1, the timing box,
stage 2 misjudging the speed for the first rock jump
stage 3 going faster in the rock garden...that said looking at my time for stage 3, it was pretty solid I think
Stage 4 there are multiple lines as the start of the stage, i picked the wrong one and took one that was slower....dumb mistake
Stage 5 again, when a couple of lines split on an uphill, I picked 1...it was the wrong/slower one...ther was also a rock i should have went stright over and jumped rather than around, but I hadnt tried it before.
So out of the 35 people in 40-49 group, I finished 7th. Which I was really happy with and was LIGHT YEARS better than I have ever done in an Enduro. I think my previous best was somewhere in the middle of a much smaller field. In 14 minutes of total time, its staggering what 20 more seconds will get you. it was great doing this with 6er and the crew...the little tips you get from everyone before the start can be so helpful....6er likes to remind me to stay higher up on berms and hes correct...so its gets in my help on a run and sticks with me.
Huge congrats to
@muddybike who slayed the field as she usually does....after riding with her for as long as I have, I was not at all surprised...But given her cancer not all that long ago...To say it was awesome to see her back on the podium would be an understatement.
Kris did get one picture of me as i was trying to find the finish line box
