Ringwood State Park Conditions

Cleared. Just in time for a f@@king dirt bike to ride past me on the single track I just cleared. Asked him if he knew he’s not allowed in the park, reacted revving the bike and riding just by my side. Particularly genius move considering the angry guy holding a running chainsaw in his hands…this was compounded by the particularly sizable convoy of quads and side by side…

Wait! I thought we were supposed to kill Moto/quad riders and use them as trail filler…..have I been overly proactive again?🙄
On a side note, please don’t dig to deep on the bridges trail switch backs, the worms need more time.😗

Better get out there soon. As I was finishing up and headed up the hill to the school, there were about 10 side by sides and atvs headed down towards Ice Pond Rd.

You missed me by a minute, that motorcade passed in front of me as soon as I entered the woods at the school.

They don’t even get in there from the school anymore, my wife saw them getting ready to enter the woods directly from Valley Rd from the house of the kid that killed 4 bear cubs a couple years ago.

It would be nice if someone reported this to the cops from the town. Unless the locals complain to the local cops nothing is going to happen. The Moto heads are using public roads to get to the park and this is where they need to be stopped.

Ringwood Police can do nothing as this is State Park jurisdiction. State Park Police can do nothing because NJ AG told them not to pursue Quad/Dirt bike as it would be dangerous to the public. Also, they are severely understaffed and can't be everywhere.

Ringwood Police tries every now and then to set them up on the road but these bastards have a network and they warn each other if the Police is around. As soon as the Police leaves you can hear the quads revving up their engines and take it to the road, I kid you not.

Honestly, almost every backyard I pass by while walking the dog most of the days has quads, it's kind of a losing battle.

I know who some of them are (not personally, but I know where they live). A couple years ago one of this idiots, a minor, almost ran over my dog on a fire road while he was skidding on a turn (the dog was on a leash)...I was heading toward his house to have a chat with his father, when I saw him through the window in his underwear, with a gigantic beer belly spread on his lazy boy I had the sudden revelation it wouldn't work that well or be worthless at best and left it alone...

Please reread my post, the a lot of Moto kids are riding on public roads to get to the trail heads from their houses. I know this because I have almost hit a couple of them (with any luck I will get them next time) driving to the park.

Please reread my answer, the Ringwood Police Dept is trying to wait for them to show up on the roads leading to the park but they stay put until someone blows the horn (figuratively speaking as in 'clear to go') when the Police has to go back to their normal patrol activities.

As you can imagine Ringwood finest are not counted in the thousands so there's no hope to monitor all the possible access points to the park. Some of the quads actually own property bordering with the park, so no possible way to get them there.

At Ryerson the big stone that blocks the entrance has not been moved since its installation, a dirt bike can make it through but not quads. Since quad activity has gone up since, they enter uphill from Ryerson on Valley Rd, either using one of at least 2 additional gateways to the park that I know of, or directly from their own property that borders with the park (this is the case I described earlier, where a group of 10+ started right at the bear-cubs-killa's house.

Not a problem with an easy solution.

Honestly, as an atv rider myself, we can get through most things. That rock by ryerson is def not a deterrent as there is ample time for a 4x4 to block and tackle it an move it. Used to do this all the time. Now with that said, I'm not a part of this particular problem but I can attest to getting chased by cops back in the day when I was a kid and having all my tickets thrown out. This was 20 years ago now, but this is still the way. Another thing to keep in mind now, a lot of these kids (this is specific to West Milford but I assume would be true elsewhere) are friends with the younger cops, and they are given a heads up to these types of things.

Really? The solution was was created in 1897…. See below 😁

Now something like that would make me take my motocross bike out and just roost you. I mean just saying, of course with all the love in the world 😘. All joking aside, the state of ringwood because of the bikes is deplorable. I will say this, unlike some other parks, I haven’t seen anyone exactly on single track. Perhaps the focus needs to be on creating single track trails and staying off fire roads as much as possible until park/state figure out a better way. Im used to telling the State what to do as a consultant to them, but in this case, money is the argument always.

I haven’t ridden Ringwood in a few years. Are the trails really messed up?

While I can appreciate how much fun an ATV or dirt bike can be, let's not forget they are illegal both in the park and on the road. If one of those 'kids' runs you over while crossing the street good like finding who that is and sue for your medical bills. Just sayin'

Basically you are allowed to ride one legally only on private property if I'm not mistaken. You can't register one nor get insurance so if anything happens you would be on your own.

I don't particularly love to ride the fire roads especially because they're mostly in a state of disrepair due to the weather, lack of maintenance and yes the ATX and dirt bikes ripping like they're escaping a T-Rex on the loose.

With the addition to the park users of dirt bikes the problem is going to get exponentially worse, because first of all they can and do use singletrack trails, second while I'm sure some are disciplined and capable riders (still, willing to brake the law nonetheless) once it's a known fact among the dirt bike riders community that there are singletracks to be ridden at Ringwood that will attract both the good ones (?) and the ones that will just rip and destroy the fragile structure that is a trail. Same as the MTB community to be honest, when I see mud riders getting in the park in spite of the trails being mud pits I am pissed at them as much as I am at ATVs and dirt bikers.

Finally, it's not just kids, unless pot bellied, bald 50+ are to be considered kids then I am a kid too...
