Rider down

i went to therapy today. I did the evaluation and she watched me walk. right away she noticed that i was favoring it and causing more problems. once i fixed the way i was walking i felt much better. we also did exercises while my leg was up on the ball. she said that it would help the excess swelling go away and stretch it out.

she said dont push it on the bike for now. if i want to do it dont use any resistance. this is fine because as of sat night i could not use any.

i have less pain and more range of motion than i had this morning. i wish i could have gone last week.

I hate knee surgery...had 2 acl reconstructions in the left knee years back & I know for sure that knee will never be the same. Went snowboarding last weekend & felt all screwed up on left side- does every year in the beginning of the season.
From past experience, I say stay on top of your pt, ice & do not go back to any sports too soon...
You guys are gonna do awesome- just stick w/ it... 🙂

I'm at PT right now, to bad this isn't hooked to the whole live blog thing, I take a pic. of the barcalounger saddle on the exercise bike. Lasted 10 minutes on that thing yesterday.

My ROM is excellent, leg strength is just about equal. Only thing keeping me on the crutches is the micro- fracture, mid Dec before I can toss them.

Asked my PT about riding and what type of gear I can push. He said mid gear. I didn't ask fro an explination what mid gear was, I'm going to take it as my 39/11. About as middle as it gets.

2 sessions down, 18 more to go.

on just the knee front. I am riding on an exerciser for 30min once a day along with 30 on the threadmill. Between the cardio and the streching twice a day I should be ready to go soon.

I would say that if I wanted I could go for a road ride next week I could. The only thing I am worried about is putting my foot down in a hurry. That sideways load would be too much now.

it's just over 13 days now. it looks like 30 days off the bike after surgery. You could push it and ride sooner, but I don't think it would be smart.

injured rider update.

two weeks later and i am riding the exercise bike like a champ. i still cant walk too fast. i get more pain walking than riding. i will be going out this week for a road ride to test it out.

panhead how are you doing?

sunday night sexy the SE bikes version is up. NSFW:drooling:

PT is going great, I keep shutting down the shock treatment machine. Guess all these years of being a welder kind of raised my tolerance to electric.

I put over 4 hours on the trainer last week, might have over did it a little. New pain in the side of my knee. PT said its OK, as long as it doesn't start hurting in the front.

Guess I'm trying to maintain fitness to much, going to have to make a real effort to just spin in a nothing gear.

Bottle hand-off at CP was interesting yesterday, Doner and EABODS comming in at the same time had me hopping on one foot. Almost positive I never put my right foot down.

Really digging your blog, going to check it out now.

on the exerciser i was spinning a nothing gear for the first 2 weeks. i have an old one that has no resistance. this week i added some low resistance and was up to 80 rpms which is my normal warm up pace.

i need work on the thread mill. that is where i get pain in my knee. all this has reeked havoc on my bad back which is causing more problems.

in the midst of all this i am taking welding class, too funny. glad you enjoy the blogging.

So you wanna to be a welder? I'll go out on a limb and guess TIG or Braze. Who/ where are you going? Any certs at the end? I never liked TIG until recently, mainly a stick guy for 15 years. Shop guys used the MIGs. Gets real fun 90' in the air with half a bag on and a ton of iron swinging on a ball couple feet from your head.

i've been looking around for a new frame, Mattyb turned me on to Misfit, I think I'm going 100% domestic, small shop but the wait is up to a year. Enter Percocet, while surfing for frames with the warm fuzzy feeling the idea hit me to weld up my own. I came back to realilty and realized the whole jig set up would run way past any rational person's idea of smart. But the bug has bitten, we'll see.

Back on topic, Where is your knee hurting? Mine is starting on the cap and on the side of my leg, kind of near where the bone was cannaled out. Had to cancel PT tonight, seems I forgot about a meeting tonight. Going tomorrow to see if I can find out what went awry. Second Dr visit is next Monday, had to reschedule that since I also forgot I am going out of town on business next week. Gotta love the Perc, I'm starting to wonder what other surprises I'll come across.

I've been doing a 39/15 or less, 80-90 rpms. Didn't crank the resist knob down, but there was pressure. Last night I kept it in the 20's cogs, half hour.

We'll see.

Thereapy this morning. My PT feels the pain I'm getting is from scar tissue, he can feel it on the side of my knee. The pain is in the wrong place for it to be the tendon popping loose.

Shock treatment was taken up a notch, now I have 2 leads run to my leg, he even lets me control the juice. Great, a Pavlovian Sado-Masochist is at the wheel. At least I made some people's morning a little brighter.

Since I can't put any weight on my leg yet my PT consists of leg lifts, massages and shock treatment. All of which I can do at a local massage palor. For a few bucks more I'd be happy.

I'm shooting for a road ride for the New Year, hope to start training shortly after.

How about your riding/walking? Your pain go away yet, Bighit?

Great news! I was originally told that I wouldn't be able to drive or work for at least 6 weeks. Just got the ok to drive 3 weeks early. Also told I can work again, just have to take it easy. Going to start PT today. Things were really looked depressing for a while, now I will have something to be thankful for Thursday.

glad to hear this!!!! 😀

good to hear dmc123. pain in the knee is one thing but your injuries can really take the wind out of your sails.

i started PT with my old therapist on mon. last week was with a fill in. My favorite trainer really ratcheted up the therapy. we transitioned from basic movements and getting the swelling down to stretching and strength.

i get pain in the original area if i go too hard. Doc says that it is a good signal that i am going too hard. The extremes are where i get general pain now. after a good session yesterday i can finally walk down the stairs without leaning on anything, but i still have to go slow.

Stretching and walking are the big ones for me. i do my stretching twice a day and walk once a day for 30min.

so far so good.

Well I guess if I can drag the xmass tree down from the attic I am doing fine.

I am up to 30 min on the bike, my norm with a bad back. Then 15-20 on the thread mill, down from my usual 30 min.

I am a little clicky when I walk sometimes. After sitting or sleeping it's really tough to get going. Still have pain when I bend it all the way. I could road ride up and down the street if I wanted.

Added squats holding onto something and leg presses.

How are you making out panhead.

2nd check up visit was today. ROM 143* and strength 4/5 is 20% ahead of average. Doc tried attributing it to attention to detail and determination, I pinned it to determination. I can officially ditch the sticks on the 14th, then it will be a matter of getting the strength to 100%.

As far as the bike, still trainer indoors real light gear. 80-110 rpm for 30 minutes min, up to 2 hours max. when I go that long the resistance is almost not there, just use it for the motion(twss-PAD). Figure to take it easy, gradually build back up.

I also have some clicking and sticking, doc and pt are ok with it, so it must be just scar tissue breaking up. Next week is the all clear for road and mtn riding, I'm going to hold off on the mtn until after the new year. Although I am tossing about leaving the land of rocks and hitting the land of sand before that.

I have a shed to build (actually my new cave of pain training room) then Mattyb will get a call to renovate my downstairs.

Hopefully my good news rubs off on both you and dmc.

Love the bobber!

I am doing well. I am walking normal, but I have a little pain in my swing through step.

I am starting to do leg presses and squats with very little weight or body weight.

Carrying things up or down the stairs is a little tough. I can ride the exercise bike with resistance now on a random setting. That great because it changes without me knowing.

I got three more PT sessions left so we are going to kick it up a notch. This week end I will go for a ride to celebrate 1 month after surgery.

How are you guys making out?

I worked 3 half days this week. Since I work in construction, I had to take it easy. I was still supprised how tired I got after just a few hours. PT has helped loosen things up, hoping a few more weeks and I will be close to normal. My next step is to get back on my bike (probably just the trainer for now) so I can get some endurance back. I was having one of my best years for mountain biking before this happened, hope to get a couple rides in before the end of the year to complete my goal.

Doc cleared me for riding outdoors starting tomorrow, still no walking. He said I'm healing at a high school athelete rate, pretty good because in HS I was doing everything possiable to make sure I didn't live this long. Probably going to do a nice easy flat 20 or so miles in NY tomorrow. Haven't figured out what to do when I stop.

PT has me doing straight leg lifts with 3 whole pounds! He's pretty sure when I can put my use my leg, I will probably be fine and he can release me.

Still loving controlling the shock treatment machine, have to buy one of them!

Good to hear! so .... youre not cleared for walkin without sticks... but youre gonna do a flat 20? Im throwin all my shit in a dumpster and taking up needlepoint! Bravo sir... Bravo!

The only reason I'm stuck on these is because they micro fractured my leg. Can't put any weight on the joint for a week and a half.

Although I can clear about 10' on a good crutch stride😀

Lent my Geared MTB out, still smart enough to stay away fron my ss
