REI Bike Shop?

I was wondering if anyone has used the REI bike shop in East Hanover? I have a pretty high end mtn bike which I need to have someone checkout my bottom bracket. I also need to have my Elixirs bled. I've gone to other shops but being that I am an REI member they give nice discounts on labor and the shop seemed well put. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Someone correct me, but I think the head mechanic there owned a bike shop and is well respected. I forget his name.

That would be good to know. No offense I've had my bike worked on by many of the local shops by me. Sometimes "they get it" other times they dont. I dont have a problem giving them a shot.

I myself am an REI member and love to get those dividend dollars back every year.

Support your local bike shop... Stores like this are great for all of your other outdoor needs, but local bike shops are greatly affected by the big box stores. Without us, bike shops would probably fade out and be taken over by stores like REI. You see it happen all the time.

And you're only gonna get back $10 - $20 back on your dividend anyways. You can get a sweet water bottle or maybe a North Face shirt on sale, or you can support a local business.

Just my two cents!!!

I am a regular there. I have dealt with a guy and a gal, both of which know what they are talking about. Oh, and not having to deal with a 2-3 week backlog, priceless!

I dont really care about the dividend. I just want my bike fixed right the first time. Yes, the week to 2 week backlog many lbs have is annoying. I have to drop my bike off to be waiting at least a week because Little Johnny needs to have his training wheels taken off.

I'm giving REI a shot. I'll post once I go through this. Thanks.😀

Pete works there. He used to be a mechanic at Town Cycle. He occasionally posts on the board, though it's pretty much relegated to the fall when he announces his yearly birthday ride up at Jungle. I think his name here is Cycleboy, formerly TownCycleBoy. Or something like that.

Never shopped at REI so I can't say for sure how the shop is. What I will say is Pete is a really good guy. He did work at Town Cycle for a long time & saw this as a great opportunity for himself & moved on (I believe he's the bike shop manager @ REI). He is still really close with the whole Town Cycle crew, which I think says a lot.

+1 for Pete - knows his stuff and has hooked me up when I've really done a number on my bike - ps he will be at the soon to b opening REI paramus

Another vote for Pete (aka clcleboy) he's a great guy. He gave me a tour of Jungle Habitat last year on his birthday. Give him a shot 🙂

Not REI, but I've been to the EMS in Bridgewater. I needed to get my brakes bled and Garden State Bicycle was backed up for three weeks, just to bleed the front brake. Took it to EMS and he did it right away. Sometimes convenience trumps supporting the LBS.

Paramus Location

I just got an email that the grand opening for REI Paramus is on August 26 & 27. Should be worth checking out.

It's official. I'm at Paramus now. The Grand Opening is the 26th. Hope to see some of you there. And hope to see more of you on my BIRTHDAY RIDE this fall😉. For those at East Hanover, stop by and see Graham. I can guarantee the standards for service and expertise will be the same.
