i found out today that the police dept in my town owns 3 bikes but i've never actually seen them used. i want to do some research into other towns that have added bike patrol to convince the police dept of the benefits. but i don't know any other towns that have bike patrol, though i'm sure they're out there. so this is where mtbnj comes in. anybody here live in such a town? or even better, happen to be a cop in such a town?

West Orange uses bikes.
The cop that got the town to use them helps run the annual 9/11 ride from the WTC to the pentagon. I used to fix the support vehicles for the ride back when I fixed cars for a living.
Actually my first real mountain bike ride (in South Mountain, when it was legal) was with his step son, borrowing his bike. It had trigger shifters, I was totally baffled by them.

Rutgers Police has a bike patrol! So do the Community Service Officers (Student patrol)!

And a nice shop to boot! Park tools all around, repair stand, truing stand!

They ride I believe some kind of Raleighs....with Light and motion headlights, disc brakes...not a bad setup

South Amboy and Sayreville both have bikes. The only time you ever see them is if there is a carnival/street fair/large public outdoor event. Every so often you will see them riding around at the waterfront county park in the summer.

I know that there are about 3-4 Sayreville cops that do the WTC-DC ride every year.

NJIT police in newark have bikes....newark also has horses too...thats always interesting to see

thanks for the leads so far. i'd like to be able to contact the towns that most closely match mine, which is a small, densely populated town with a small main st and a train station. i'm not familiar with most of the places mentioned so far so if your town is similar could you indicate that?

most of the info i'll be gathering will be basic info about the town. population, area, size of the police forces as well as any info they will give on cost savings and crime statistics.

Denville Police has bikes. I see them during public events like street fairs or parades but not on a daily basis.
