I have both xtr trail and race. Not much difference in my good shoes. The platform on the trail seems to help with the economy shoes. No hot spot

I've been using Crank Bros for about 15 years. First Egg Beaters and now Candies - both XC and road. Mallets on the Enduro and DH bikes. I used to run Speed Play on the road bike, but I seem to be the only person in the world who was never able to get the engagement to be consistent. Plus, walking in road cleats sucks. Since my normal road loop has me crossing two bridges over the Delaware, I started using my mtn shoes and pedals.

Flats on the DH bike (when I run them) are also Crank Bros.

* disclaimer - Team XXL has a grass-roots deal with Crank Bros, but I've been running their pedals long before we got that and probably still would run them.
