I would go with rubber rather than foam...closer to the original, maybe a little thicker...

I picked up some PVC sheets when I bought my bike to make a guard for, I might make fenders for it. It's the same stuff they use for gun holster

i think 30mil is .03 inches about .75 mm

don't you think it is the hard cover thing under the foam thing that is the guard?

- and yes - it should either be straight cut, or a pleasant angle matching something else on the bike.
