1/28 NICA Practice at Allaire

00:55:20

Not quite an hour moving time. we spent an hour and a half riding and coaching and going over important fundamentals. I had way more fun that I expected. The high schoolers with their Enduro Bro bikes and attitude are a hoot to ride with. Brappy Kids lol

Ben will post pics on the team's facebook page.

@rlb @fidodie Will this count towards my total even though it was 5 minutes shy of an hour moving time. i'm thinking the time coaching can compensate for the 5 minute shortage

Forget it - less than 60 mins = 0!

PS just kidding, I'd count it

BAM! the ol' stick in the rear derailleur trick and holey crap it's in pieces! Hanger and mounting area of the rear tri also mangled, nice. Removed offending parts and bent back enough for a trailside SS conversion to 32/11, ride out and hit the road back. Actually worked better than I thought it would so as I got close just decided to keep moving over to Metuchen for giggles.

Gotta figure out if I need a new bike, or can repair. I carry a spare hanger, but I need to get the mounting area back straight first, and I know it's not going to want to bend back nicely. Other options are get my DH bike, or my old(er) FSR back running, or (gasp) take the wife's Giant HT on the sly. First we gotta take the kids to Monster Jam this afternoon so I'll have some time to think about it.

Be careful out there. Enjoy a historical picture of what was my derailleur.

So...I should attack now?

1/28/2017: I have been meaning to go check out this unmarked trail in Harriman. Its an old woods road near Silvermine Lake. It was built back in the 30s by the CCC (as was the lake itself). It shows on the Trail Conf. map as just running out into the woods and ending. I figured maybe it continued past what was shown on the map. Well, it doesn't. Looks like they never completed that particular project. The woods road narrowed to single-track to game trail to a very overgrown game trail to nothin'. So, it was an "out and back". Did a little more putzing around back by the lake checking out some nice cascades. My nice pano pic of them is too big to upload.

I was hoping you'd say you saw the Silver Lake Mine.
Near there is the Hanscleaver Mine I want to visit sometime.
Off the road to the right of the swimming lake.

@Kaleidopete

I'm not sure if there is a Silver Lake Mine??? The mine that I am familiar with in that immediate area is the Lewis Mine, which is OK, but not very big. It's along Nawahunta Road (woods road), which is ride-able. I also see the Cranberry Mine and Spanish mine nearby that I've never checked out. Both look more suited for hiking.

The Hasenclever mine that you mentioned is a bit more interesting, and not too far away from there...on Hasenclever Rd, which is another ride-able woods road.

A few other mines that I think are kind of interesting in Harriman are:
  • Bradley mine (especially in winter). It is really not something you can ride to. So, I usually wait until there is a lot of snow cover, then they close Arden Valley and I snow-shoe to it.
  • Boston mine which is a pretty good sized cut. Its also near Garfield mine, which is a very small hole and barely worth the side trip. But, Island Pond is beautiful so you might as well go look at the hole and check out the pond.
  • Hogencamp mine and the surrounding area are pretty neat. The mines are not real obvious and you have to hunt for them a bit off the trail. One mine is easier to see from the Long Path near Cape Horn in that area.
  • Pine Swamp mine has several good cuts, too. It can be combined with Hogencamp in the same ride.
  • Greenwood mine is decent and could also be done with Pine Swamp and Hogencamp. There is another in that area called Surebridge, which is not really ringing a bell for me right now.
There are several more, but those are the ones that stick out in my mind. As I'm sure you know, this whole area was very active mining.

Wow..great recap of the mines. I'll copy n paste that info for future use. Thanks!

Beach break-in for new fat tires. Opted to start from the Barnegat Light parking lot in order to collect the history bonus point while I was at it.

Wreck of the Sea King - Now buried in the dunes after the "new" south jetty was built. Longshore currents have piled so much sand into the area since it sank that the tug is now upwards of 50ft (currently) from the water. Best I did today was a picture from the beach since the dune was so badly eroded during the last storm that they closed the path (and it is 5-10ft straight up now😵). Included closer pictures from last time out also.

South for a bit. Then north after realizing that a new trough in the beach hadn't fully drained, and I was now boxed in by water. After course correcting there was a bit more south and then back north.
Just about back to the jetty when my phone decided it needed to shut down because the battery was dead. So much for that 10 minutes or so of moving. Back parallel to the jetty, and then walked thru the main part of the park to the lot.
Plug the phone and and start to pack up gear. Phone restarts immediately at 30% batt left. WTF! Drop balaclava and goggles I had for the wind, and back out for round 2. Thought I'd try something different and started towards Viking Village/High Bar Harbor instead.
Wind on the road was tough. Just strong enough to be a drag and add a chill. Never bothered to go around this way before, so wasn't sure what I'd find beside houses. Knew there was technically part of the park land on the peninsula, but unsure if it was actually open. Pleasantly surprised to find a gate and beach access. Even more than that was a short singletrack that dropped on to the bay side.

Crunched thru some piled up debris and onto the bay beach for a short way. Got increasingly narrow, so time to circle back. Apparently been some major wave action on this side.

Back around to the side facing the inlet. Able to get a bit further down this side. Fairly large driftwood trees that I had some fun weaving thru. Bank started to transition from sand to peat, offering a welcomed firmer surface ( sand here was still better than the oceanfront). Saw someone 500ft, maybe further, down the beach. Looked like they were moving stuff around, and began to wonder what I was riding up to. Quick realization that I was about to stumble into ruining a duck hunter's day. Pulled a 180 back to the car before they locked the lot up for the day.

Topped off a good ride with my good deed for the day. Guy rides up in the lot and asks if I have a presta pump. Sure, no problem. After observing that this isn't his strong suit I help get some air in his rear tire. All good until the valve core unscrews with the pump. Whatever. Core back and pump back up. Damn core comes out again. Now I'm annoyed. Start pumping again and manage to pinch my finger in the pump like a jackass. Blister forms immediately. At attempt 4 I finally decide to dig in the car for needle nose pliers from my tool bag. Snug the hell out of it, and it finally holds. Dude rides off newly informed of presta/schrader adapters so he can get air easier next time.

Small price to pay.
