Northern New Jersey Conditions 3-18-010

Actually things are not looking very good from what a few folks are telling me.

Mahlon - It's still winter there... Snow on the ground, mega frost heave, you will sink into the trail.

Deer Park - Any thing that gets wet is really really wet. Keith removed hundreds of branches but the wet areas are a "disaster".

Allamuchy - Again, I was told where it's wet it's really wet. Sticks, branches, you name it... Matt has the details..

Sounds like everyplace is soft and slow rolling. I also heard about some fresh post-holes.. (read: horse prints)

The roads are doing well however. So more road riding for me anyway. And matchy-matchy for others.

You've got to love these temps... Great for blowing out the winter fat!

Couple more weeks... I hope.

Strat...any read out on how trashed things are a MDR from a tree/limb perspective?

I'm planning on getting out tomorrow PM, hopefully, or Saturday for sure to do some recon.

I rode the Hog Pen area behind Cedar Lake in Denville today. The rain really ripped up the trails but what killed em worse was a bunch of ATV's went through and turned all the wet areas into massive mud pits. I'd say at this point it doesn't matter if you ride back there as it won't have any further impact. The trails are really eroded from the rain with loose rocks everywhere. I mostly avoided the mud. It's pretty hard work but fun in it's own way. I hit it coming home from Splitrock and it killed my legs pretty much.

Mooch north is an absolute NO GO! Did a bunch of fallen branch detail on the tranquility side. Where streams run are now rivers, huge amounts of water run-offs. Terrain is 90% soft to quick sand. Major erosion on white can only imagine how bad other areas fared. And yes post holes galore, I guess horsey folks don't get the memo. Would be nice to put signage up to warn trail users...

Maaaan!... I was hoping all this beautiful weather would kick the crap out of the moisture on the trails. Thanks for the heads up.. See you guys in May. 😡

I didn't get any feedback on the blow down....

But.. KITTATINNY.... Don't bother unless you've got a chainsaw as I was told from the same guy who went to MD. It's supposed to be completely blasted.

Mahlon

I drove down Sparta Mountain Road this AM and stopped at the northern-most entry onto the white trail.

The bad news is that the white trail that runs parallel to Sparta Mtn Road at that point is a creek a couple of feet wide. Seriously.

The good news is that walking onto the trail, it seems firm enough to ride on. Some more good news is that it looks as though there are only trace amounts of snow left. From what I could see of Cascade from the road, it looks to be totally clear of snow.

At any rate, that brief recon was okay enough that I'm going forward with my recon run mid-afternoon (barring work getting in the way), going deeper into the park. I'll keep ya' posted.

So when's the trail maintenance day to clean up the mooch as well as other places so that things are ready to roll once it dries out?

That sucks. I saw the quad tracks going in off of Old Beach Glen. Hogs Pen is quite literally that anyway - some pretty serious mud bogs back there. I only walked up to the new section of blue (Beach Glen Trail) in Splitrock and it looked a bit moist in areas (but that was Tuesday).

Looking forward to hearing a report. I was REALLY hoping to get over there this weekend.

Gonna be at least two weeks

News reoprt this morning from the Bethpage golf course indicated that at least two weeks before any can play there. That might be an indication of what we are in for. Remember Golf courses generally drain well and get lots of sun ie evaporation. Stay on the road...Son.

Have you hit up any singletrack at Splitrock? If so, is it OK to ride yet? I've been staying on the wide stuff, along the stream to the dam, up to the Hawk Overlook, etc.

I went to the Tourne yesterday, I was jonesen for a ride. Haven't been on my bike since last August .

I was in and out in about 20 minutes.

The high spots are bone dry , but any low lying trails are soaked and nothing but mud. It's kinda hard to get from point A to B . The main walking trail is swamp like.

There were actually a few sections that were not only wet but it was running water , as in a little stream had formed.

It's gonna need more than a weekend to dry out .

Has anyone had a look at Wawayanda? I am closeby there for the weekend. I would have loved to wing it and ride, but after reading all of these posts I think it would be better to go take a look on foot first. Will do that late this afternoon. Heidi
