Need help with tubeless / Tubeless 101

manny I am tired of your name always popping up in this tubeless section buy a compressor ! 😛 I sealed rampages and ardents on my bontragger 29' with ducktape to cover the holes, all I needed was air, the mini compressors work fine for bikes. Ps anyone want my rush ? :drooling:

UST Wheel w/ Non UST Tire

I'm having trouble with hand pumping a Nevagal 2.1 (non UST) tire with a Mavic Crossmax ST (UST) wheel. The tire will not inflate. The problem is similiar to ROBSON. I'm not using any rim strips. I know some of you say its possible to hand pump. I really lack the patience to go through the experimentation.

According to NO TUBES the way to go, is his $22, 38 gram rim strips. He claims the strip will really help against burping. I suppose that also means its safer than ghetto strips or no strips. With the his strips, will I be able to hand pump? What other options are there?

Those strips will take up some of the play between the rim and the tire but they call for you to drill out the rim.

I personally would NEVER do this on a UST rim. Once you drill out the rim, you can never go back to a proper UST valve core.

When you use an UST tire and rim together you will get an awesome bead lock and much tougher sidewalls.

You can go with a tubeless ready tire instead which will be somewhat lighter.

In either case you may still need a compressor. Relying on a handpump to seat any kind of tubeless tires is optimistic at best.

I want to build new wheel set with Bontrager Duster and use UST tires such as Bontrager XDX. This should be bulletproof set up.
I wish there was more 29er UST tires available...
 
Finally!

I set up my big travel bike last night after being made fun of by the tubeless crowd at RV. IT WAS SO EASY! That is if you have UST rims and tires. Long live the 26" 😀

I didn't need a compressor for the wire bead but I did need one for the foldable. I woulda tried duct tape for the foldable if Jeff didn't loan me his. I had a pretty good gash on one tire. It was spewing! But after several items of adding more air and fiddling with it it ended up turning into a small fizz till the next morn. I was very hesitant to ride on it and thankfully it held like a champ. It was very nice to descend with on the rocks confidence and not worrying about flatting. That I think is the best tubeless benefit.

I picked up my 819's from Kirt yesterday and set them up today. Now I can spend money deciding on tires. Currently running nevegals front and back.
 
I'm back on good terms with tubeless. Put more stans in and sealed the tire back up. No soapy water or anything. Just used the compressor. I musta lost all the stans on the big cut when I first tried to mount them up. But this puncture was way smaller compared to that and it sealed up like nothing.

A wise old man once said, if Stans thought it needed glitter they would have already put it in. I agree. The cons outnumber the questioning pros. Glitter is messy. It doesn't move with the sealant. It just ends up sticking to the inside of the tire. Along with the Stans, I didn't see any glitter fly out of my large gash the first time. And lastly, it weighs me down. I may put a little in just to make it look cool when my tire explodes JRA though.

Have a look at Stan's installation clips. He is all about the soap and water. I think it is more important that we know.

Glitter for the record does work and I will try and get pics of proof later for you wee wise man. Anything bigger then a pinhole isn't gonna seal with sealant alone. A large gash nothing sealing it period.
 
I've seen the stans and cafe videos and used the soap suds the first time around as instructed. What's so important about it if I got the bead to pop on just fine without it this time?
 
I only used the soap when I was converting to tubeless. With the UST setup I did not use any and everything setup fine. I did put glitter in though.:popcorn:
 
Bad tape or bad valve fit?

So I'm trying to set up second pair of wheels. DTswiss 450 rims up. They had tubeless tape on them when I bought them and are new. I put valve in and did everything. Soap and all. Shoot some air in. It wants to pop on but there is a slow leak a the rim's valve hole so I can't get the pressure up. I did notice that when I put the valve on the tape, the tape folded up off the rim a bit as it was being pulled towards the hole. The valve is also a Notubes Olympic, which I see on their site says for Olympic rims onlys. So which is the problem you think?
 
3rd times the charm

Tried a different valve. Nope. Still saw some weeping by valve and the nipples. Must be the tape. Removed POS tape and Gorilla Taped it. Mission accomplished.
