playing catch up

ok, so today motionbased decided to let me upload. so, here goes:

thursday, 7/12: the aBRIDGED ride. bailed on 30 to ride n4bridges. it almost didn't hurt so bad. data:

http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/activity/3331919

sunday, 7/15: ok, so here is the DNF from the LMC. i was hoping to see the data chopped up a bit more but no such luck...maybe gleam something out of it. like, oh, i dunno, my moving time was really 35 minutes and not 38? alas, it ain't gonna be. data:

http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/activity/3331921

today, 7/17: ye olde 20 miler. i felt really good today. my moving speed was in the acceptable range and it was nice out. not to mention the fact that nearly any day riding is a good day. data:

http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/activity/3331918

so, there it is. the recap. i really threw the LMC in the mix at "the last minute" so to speak since i really had no plans of doing it. the darkhorse, however, i did (or do). over the next month i really need to up the TIS as much as possible which of course won't be easy with work, my travel schedule, the seemingly endless amounts of family picnics that need to be attended and the general course of life. eh, i'll do what i can. all i know is that i'm so far ahead of total miles this year v. last that it's all good.

of course there's lots of other stuff going on too, but i'll let norm keep everyone in the loop on that drama. 😀

playing catch up part deux

with vacation looming this past sunday i didn't have much time to think about updating this at all. with all the packing and other nonsense that is involved with getting two three year olds to the beach, one three year old golden to her vacation destination, one over planning wife just into the car and me, the most of the time thinking on a three year old level (oh, look, waves!) well, you get the point.

so here is the data from my quick spin through KVSP last friday on ms mary. still just love riding that bike even though the SS thing on the needle sorta sucks (for me). data:

my public statement about ripping heythorp's legs off will not materialize. at least not this year...but next year he had better watch out!

so, off to the beach. pack up the road bike, plans on coming back here with at least 60 miles of riding under my arse...nope. the quick synopsis:

night 1, sunday: first night ever in big girl beds. erin in our "bed" by 2:30 with a "good morning daddy!" (bed is quoted b/c having slept on QP before, i can say with 100% certainty that QP is more comfortable than this particular pullout couch). she doesn't go back to sleep until 4:30 so neither do we. riley makes it though the night!

night 2, monday: second night ever in big girl beds. erin tells us she want to sleep on the couch. we say no. erin has other ideas and by 1:30 is in our "bed" she prompty goes back to sleep. 4:30 am, riley, who apparently was shot out of a cannon comes to the "bed" with a glass shattering "good MORNING!". her rock star status allows her to defy sleep completely until 5:00 (pm) when her batteries finally kick out. i manage to drag myself though a three.5 mile run. most miserable day we've had in quite some time.

night 3, tuesday: night three in big girl beds. erin once again tells us she wants to sleep on the couch which she does, by 12:00a...but she falls right to sleep. her head on my stomach, her leg in my face. i figure, eh, it could be worse. thankfully it wasn't. riley makes it through the night (yippie!) and we're up somewhat happily at 6:30. i finally have some energy to ride, which i do, from beach haven to barnegat light. after tracking down my family to get the key to the house which i locked myself out of, i'm on the road pedaling. all said and done, i rode about 34 miles. since the garmin was dead for some reason, i have zero data which is a bummer b/c i was really curious about the elevation changes on the island. oh well. but i do have to admit, not being married to a cadence or particular speed was nice.

so, there you have. more information than anyone cares to read.

.

Jake, as I found out last week, the elevation change on the island is +/- 1 ft.

That is all depending if you started your ride on the sidewalk and rode off the driveway apron.

Where are you staying at? Do you guys own or are you renting?

i stayed with my folks...they've been renting the same place for like 15 years in beach haven on 6th street.

depending on how my year goes i may look into buying a place. prolly not in LBI though. i like it there but the wife, eh, not so much.

My sister lives on 3rd st.

LBI sure has changed over the years, just like everywhere else, lets build houses on top of houses on top of houses.

oh man, you ain't kidding! the folks my parents rent from live next door. two years ago this cat from boston (who i think is tied to the pats) bought not one, but two beach front homes and tore them down to build a three story 10,000 sq ft mansion. i also found out he bought two other houses, one beach front, to live in while the construction was going on. simply insane.

i lived down there for four years though college (first 6th street, then 14th, finally moved on up to the east side at 101st on the beach!). worked at the beach haven fishery, eastern marine (on 14th) and island pursuit. one year i mistakenly installed carpet. that was awful.

all i want is literally a little cape. just someplace big enough. i'm not a mansion guy...while i admit it'd be nice.

i know someone whose father is selling his place on LBI - let me know and i will put you in touch with him.

The cape next to my sisters house is for sale, she is the co-owner of that house as well. Its got an apartment upstairs too.

there is no lack of inventory, that's for sure. while i do like LBI, i don't like the 'one way in, one way out' thing. i spent four years watching all the shoobies stacked up in their cars trying to get off the island every weekend. not that there isn't traffic everywhere but...

i rode 1 mile @ KVSP today before i hit a rock and ripped my rear der clear off the frame. then i thought to myself: self, you can run when you get home, don't worry. i immediately rolled my ankle. sweet.

so, i rode 20 on friday, 4ish monday, swam yesterday and rode one mile today, followed by a one mile hike to my car. awesome.

Wow, you've had some bad luck bro. I'm going to go ahead and say that you shouldn't bother playing the lottery. And you might not want to take up bungee jumping or jumping out of airplanes.

How did you rip the derailleur off?

my best guess is i nailed a rock...which is confirmed by the giant scrape/scuff/dent on the der.

maybe you and norm should go bowling.

maybe you should go F a cat. 😀

maybe you and norm should go bowling.

Hey I went 26 times as far as he did. I would trash him! I actually own a bowling ball and when I was unemployed I taught myself to throw with a hook instead of being a straight bowler. I was consistently able to threaten 200 which is pretty good for someone who sucks.

maybe you should go F a cat. 😀

LOL. Good job.

Is the derailleur toast?

I knackered my derailluer at the Sourlands last week, so I used it as an opportunity to dump my Shimano and switch to a SRAM X-9. I was so damn tired of tweaking the XTR after every 2 or 3 rides to stop ghost shifting. You have to look for the silver lining in this Jake.

toast is less burnt then my derailleur. metal ripped.

SRAM X-9, huh? hmmm...i've been a shimano guy since '90. you sher this new fangled stuff even works? 😀 do you know the price diff btwn the XT and X-9 off hand? but it really is that much better, huh?

edit: nevermind on the price, it's w/in $10...

The X-9 is on sale at Performance for $70, but the kicker is that you have to replace the shifter too. SRAM uses a 1:1 ratio on cable to derailleur movement where Shimano uses 2:1. So the SRAM is less susceptible to cable stretch etc. All I know is that my friends with SRAM derailleurs seem to tweak their rear D about twice a season compared to me at twice a month.

I only have 1 ride under my belt with the X-9 but so far so good.

I think soon the Shimano and SRAM derailleur will be the same. But for now if you're going to buy XT the X-9 might be a better choice. If you're going to drop for the XTR I say go with the 2008 Shimano assuming they're out (supposedly July '07).
