Just got to BFF on my movie-making soundtrack ripping frenzy, and I was reminded that it seems like every album they released contained Song for thr Dumped:

I'm a fan, but they went a bit overboard with that song. I wouldn't call them punk for Sissies. I'd call them more like what people who like They Might Be Giants listen to when they realize that TMBG sucks. Particle Man can eat me.

Cage the Elephant sounds in the mold of White Stripes/Cake and maybe a little Clinic.

Not digging Silversun.

Also got to the Cardigans in my CD collection (yeah, it's out of order. The child is an animal) and remembered how much I enjoyed their music. I think Nina Persson is an angel put on the Earth to entertain us. Or at least me.

I like the direction of this thread Iggy. Keep up the good work.
 
Silvershun pickups are a pretty deep band. Pretty emotional. Kinda makes me want to kill myself, but in a good way. Reminds me a little of old Smashing Pumpkins...Before Corgan was such a.... whatever he is now.

Anybody listen to Mute Math? I just heard them on XM. I was digging them

Well its good to hear feed back from you the viewers/listeners. Our format here at the station is college radio, music that needs to be heard. Ok I lifted that from 90.5 the Knight (Brookdale radio out of Lincroft NJ)...but thats now our motto too. This station relies on you the viewers for support. Thank you!

I like to hear bands stripped down and unplugged to see if there is really talent there and to get a glimpse of the real person. I do agree with Jeff that some times you gotta plug in and amp it up.

Having said that why don't we amp it up. Whether you like this band or not you really need to give this a listen. I have on tap the epitome of Rock & Roll.
I do not want to comment on this until after you view it, just watch the whole thing...if your a fan of rock n roll you won't be disappointed.
 
Nirvana did in the 90's what the Beatles did in the 60's by changing the landscape of sound/lyrics to mainstream America. Loads of talent what a shame...
 
Loving this thread! I usually listen to Sirius Lithium in the car. But now making a few new playlists for my iPod/commute.

I completely forgot about the Cardigans. I only have a few of their tracks but love her voice. Ever listen to Eve's Plum?

Searching for content on youtube I came across the Nirvana appearance on Johathan Ross. As I was watching, it became clear that this is not what the Ross show had in mind when they booked Nirvana. After some more research this is the back story on that appearance from the Sunday Herald. I live for moments like these.

IT was perfect. One Friday night, Nirvana appeared on Tonight With Jonathan Ross - an early evening Letterman knock-off that went out three times a week on Channel 4. Introduced as "pwobably the biggest band in the world wight now", they were supposed to play Lithium, a song that blended their own brand of industrial strength Black Sabbath riffs with a Beatles-esque "yeah/ yeah/yeah" chorus making it the most gloriously accessible track from the equally glorious Nevermind album. Instead they played Territorial Pissings, a blistering two-and-a-half minute three-chord noise-fest. Kurt Cobain's cryptic, feminist-tinged lyrics were barely comprehensible over guitars that were so loud they drowned out Dave Grohl's drum kit. The song ended in a caterwaul of feedback as they stumbled off stage, leaving in their wake trashed guitars, a toppled Mesa-Boogie amp stack and a bemused Jonathan Ross.
It was a moment that summed up Nirvana: a band fiercely committed to railing against the mediocrity of their surroundings and who really didn't care about what was good for their career. Their performance on the Jonathan Ross show was only their second ever TV appearance and they didn't even consider playing Smells Like Teen Spirit, their breakthrough song released earlier that week.

Once again its good to hear from you the listeners, all comments are appreciated. I loved the Airborne Toxic Event clips that Mike posted...blending violins, cello and electric guitar on Kimmel was pure punk, awesome stuff.
Robin & Norm mentioned there love for the Cardigans. This band is easy to listen to, Carnival and Love Fool are pure pop bliss... what can I say, its ok to be happy. After listening to Nirvana's Territorial Pissings like 10 times yesterday my wife needed to hear something sweeter today and Nina Persson is sweeeet! Who wouldn't be her love fool?!

I will say the Nirvana clip sent me into a Nirvana YouTube then Wikipedia surfing frenzy yesterday, which ended up depressing me by the end of it.
 
I've always seemed to have a love-hate relationship with Nirvana. I got sick of them for a while because all you'd hear on the radio were the "hit songs" by them, then I hear a pure piece of punk bliss like Territorial Pissings or Negative Creep and I'm sad thet they're not with us anymore. Who knows what Kurt could've done.

Airborne Toxic Event is IMO one of those albums you can sit and listen to from start to finish.

Nirvana is defenitely a love hate relationship. They are one of those buzz word bands, like the Beatles. When someone says they like the Beatles I think to myself Hard Days Night Beatles or Sgt. Pepper's Beatles.

This is a new series we will run once a week to spotlight a band that has broken through and are happening Here & Now.

Passion Pit
This group out of Cambridge Massachusetts formed in 2007 but has amassed quite a following in a brief amount of time. Passion Pit takes its name from a slang term for drive in movie theaters. All of the band members except the lead singer attended the Berklee College of Music. Watching these guys bop around on stage reminds me of revenge of the nerds. They are nerds for sure but it just goes to show that some catchy beats and distinctive vocals can make a hit.
Ok, enough stalling I’ll let you in on the Little Secret. I love this clip…yeah I wish I was 20 again. At my age if I joined in that fun I’d be creepy old guy. I have to wait another 20yrs. to join in the fun than I’ll be cute old guy.

Did I ever tell you about the time I actually met Iggy Pop? Of course not.. I was at a bar in Atlantic City 4 or 5 years ago in the trump casino I think. I turned around and there was Iggy freaking Pop. I said "holy F#ck, its Iggy Pop!". And he said "Who the Fu@k are you?". I froze. He was actually pretty cool and talked to me for a few minutes. The best part was the person he was with.... Shirley Freaking Manson. Damn, she was intimidating. And Hot.

Twinkie Tuesday​

Do you guys remember 2 for Tuesday, WNEW used to play 2 songs from an artist on Tuesdays. We'll I don't want to blatantly rip them off so I am going to call it Twinkie Tuesday. MTBNJ U will play two songs from a featured artist on Tuesdays. If your still wondering why I call it Twinkie Tuesday let me state the obvious...Twinkies come 2 in a pack. Yuk Yuk

So tonight's featured guest is Jack Johnson. Jack's career took off when he sang on G-Love's album. The song Rodeo Clowns that G-Love put out is actually Jack singing, this is G-Loves best song ever IMO.
Jack has it all...looks, singer/songwriter and probably a 12" schlong. Some guys have all the luck, but he deserves it. This appearance at Tower records you can see his beautiful personality shining through. I love these types of performances, it gives us a chance to see the real person. So let me introduce you to my friend JJ.

Music That Needs to be Heard​

Tonight some Local Natives will play a song from there debut album put out earlier this year. These guys are not local but they are natives of California. Here is a quick review of the album, Gorilla Manor, that I picked up on the net.

Like a hairy barbershop quintet, they harmonies to absolute perfection, purring gorgeously from beneath their impressive moustaches. Living together, writing together, and playing together, these guys are totally in sync: a solid unit of supple, breathy vocals and multi-instrumentation.

The one thing I would add is that they play with an intensity that let’s you know there passionate about music. The more I hear this song Airplanes the more I like it. If you are into this band do a search of them for a Simon & Garfunkel cover of Cecilia…they do an incredible 3-part harmony of this that is pure jubilation.

Hey campers. I have really been enjoying myself here at the station. Music has always been somewhat important to me, I don't play an instrument but do enjoy music. Acting as program director here at the station has forced me to hone my ear to listen for talent floating around on the airwaves.
I commute 80 miles round trip to work in my car. Some nights when I get home I take my son to soccer practice in Morristown, which means more driving. All this driving adds up to a lot of time spent listening to the radio. I have satellite radio and I highly recommend it, there is enough content to keep you from getting bored. If you have been enjoying the station let me know, or if you would like to hear something or suggest something than by all means jump in. There are a lot of special feature broadcasts coming in the future but I would like to hear what you guys think.

I was really digging the clip of Cloud Cult J posted up yesterday. With some searching I found this and really liked it as well. These guys are interesting, they can harmonize and blend the cello, and violin beautifully.


Classic Clip​

Tonight in the spotlight its a new feature called Classic Clip. In the Youtube age finding video of bands pre 1990's is somewhat rare. Going back to the 70's is like unearthing some prehistoric dinosaur. Like an archaeologist we study the video and see what life was like in the 70's. After watching this video I think you would agree that the 70's was fucking awesome for music.

Once upon a time there was this singer Rod Stewart. He was from across the pond but was part of this british invasion thingy. He played in this band called the Faces which helped define 70's Rock with a good dose of funk...the 70's where all about the funk.
Part of that funk was Ron Wood on guitar, he later joined the Stones when Mick Tayor left. But anyway with Ronnie on guitar and Ian Mclagan on a Hammond B3 organ Rod Stewart never sounded better.
As Rod got older he got more wimpy and went more pop music scene. He made tons of dough and scored with a shit load of chicks. But his greatest accomplishments where back in the 70's with the Faces.
Ok let me serve up the funk.
