MTBNJ Short Track Race #1

Koreans children are brought up to hate the Japanese and any dictators whose last name ends in Kim. I believe Kong was captured from a savage island. Korea is a peninsula.
I never knew that. I work with a bunch of Koreans that I've become friends with. . They all drive Japanese cars.

Kong was captured from Skull Island!

Well hate is a strong word, but my grandparents and parents generation lived through Japanese occupation 1910-1945 so there is a lot of anti-japanese sentiment among the older folks. My parents never taught me to hate the Japanese .. the one thing I remember them telling me is that they were forced to learn and speak Japanese. But apparently there were other atrocities and things going on. Even to this day Korea and Japan are fighting over ownership of some islands. Most of my generation just try to get along, and it is a dangerous thing to generalize a whole race of people, but history is sometimes hard to forget.

Then their generation also had to live through the Korean war. Now communism is something that my dad gets real heated about. He tells me stories of Chinese soldiers marching through not really caring about the civilians, but once the communist officials started to take control, they would just start shooting anyone who dissented, friends and family.

I had setup the new tires tubeless but didn't have Stans, so I re-used a little left over from the D5's when I took them out. They bike has been sitting in my garage with 3-4 psi on the tires and they looked fine. I guess they didn't seat/seal well, so I'm going to fix that for the next session.

BTW, in those 2 laps Joe did on the 907 he was getting away from me (and with platform pedals!). After he switched to the Scalpel it was the other way around 😀

It reminded me of when I would ride my scalpel on a cross course. Somethings it does better, more stable, better downhill... some things the regular mountain bike does better...faster uphill, turns quicker....If had a 23lb one that would go uphill a little better to use for this race, im sure I would use it. I would buy a fat bike if I had money to burn, but I just dont see the need for it...its definitely better in the snow, but its not night and day better. To me anyway. My biggest objection to buying one was riding on the dirt....I have done this twice and I was totally unimpressed with the bouncing and handing on dirt, and im not buying a bike for conditions that we sometimes get in NJ for the span of a month...i dont have that kind of bike budget so long as im still racing XC.

All the old timers in Taiwan talked about how they were forced to learn Japanese back when they were occupied.

I've read some of the stuff of when the Japanese occupied China. There's a damn good reason the world didn't want Japan to ever have a military again after that. The word "rape" gets thrown around a lot, but The Rape of Nanking is possibly understated.

Short track! YES!

I didn't read through this entire thread, and I'm not going to because I want to believe that Asian relations is where all discussions of short track racing ultimately lead.

Indeed. If we had named it Tall Track it would have ended with a discussion of the Dutch.

So...what is going to be like this coming weekend? I'm not driving from NYC for lousy ride in mud/snow....

It's one thing going out there for your birthday ride when condition are good. This is different and I'm sure you will have good turn out anyway. I would love to get some mountain bike riding but given current condition this less then desired right now. I might as well stick to the road...

It's ok you can read the reviews come the Monday after and you can make your choice for MTBNJ short track #2 race...

Also there will be absolutely no mud in sight guaranteed.

Is there anyone going who might have a set of 29er studdies I could borrow? I offer beer and the secure knowledge that you won't be last place.
